Quanti ricordi! E Sonny Rollins? Bravissimo.

I just listened to a 10h European podcast radio show on Sonny Rollins (yes, 10x 1h, covering 1951-2001 !!!). My opinion of Rollins is that it seems very overrated to me. First of all as a player, he does not seem to me better than Johnny Griffin, Stitt, Roland Kirk, Phil Woods, Lateef ... but enjoys a much more important reputation ... and unjustified in my opinion. Ok he plays well, but not better than the musicians I mentioned. In terms of composition, he did not compose anything, everyone knows that St Thomas is a Caribbean folklore already recorded by Randy Weston in 1955 under the title Fire Down There. His other compositions from the 50s ... well, Oleo, Airegin etc ... this can in no way be compared to the compositions of Trane, Bird, Monk or Shorter ... also, his playing and his sound are terribly degraded after 1966 (36 years). It seems that he was traumatized by the arrival of Ornette, Trane, Ayler ... In the 60's he tried to be more free than Ayler, more calypso / blues than Ornette, and more mystical than Trane, but he didn't. did not succeed. Then in the 70s / 80s he tried to be funky, disco ... with really ridiculous and cheesy results ... Did he want to be funkier than James Brown himself? Also, in the radio show they say that he was paid current $ 300,000 for himself to record the Nucleus album (so listen to the result !!!!), and that, for his concerts, his financial claims were unrealistic, only the big festivals could afford it. He played with the Stones but didn't want to go on tour with them because, according to Jagger himself, he wanted too much money! I mean, I'm not making anything up here. In my opinion, he should have remained what he was before, a disciple of Bird at the Tenor, and quit at the age of 40 to leave a quality job, and without trying to follow fashion.
Thank you for not insulting me because I have documented myself on Rollins and I like to have constructive discussions without being attacked on my person.

I respectfully disagree. I admire all the saxophonists you mention, as well as others like Charlie Rouse, Cannonball Adderley, and Art Pepper. In Sonny's defense, as if he needs it, Coltrane regarded him as his equal, and he admired Coltrane with great generosity. I can't say I followed his work in the 70s and 80s, but I think a lot of jazz musicians were thrown by the huge popularity of rock and tried to reach that audience. In any event, we are fortunate that dozens of amazing musicians are available to us with a click on our mouse, and I'd rather appreciate and learn from them than rate them.

Huh, you don't have listen to '' Sonny Meets Hawk' '' (1963), have you ?
Listen to it : ''Loverman'' for example, a succession of mini-solos between Coleman 'Bean' Hawkins, aka Hawk (tenor sax man, just the 'father' of jazz saxophone and one of the very first jazzmen to improvise, pionneer of the art of soloing on a theme) and his musical self-acclaimed son : Sonny 'Newk' Rollins aka the saxophone colossus.
And yeah the man and his sax sound are colossal : as his generous big sax voice on the tracks ''The Night Has A Thousand Eyes'' (1962) or ''Where Am I ?" (1961)-(with Jim Hall at his best on the guitar)
Joshua Redman a few years ago told in a interview a little bit the contrary of you : that Rollins would be underrated as a solist and on the album ''Sonny Meets Hawk'' especially : a source of inspiration for him.
Because, really, believe me or not, Rollins' art of improvisation is at his summum with Hawins on this LP.
Rollins made several albums that were real tours de force (''Saxophone Colossus'' 1956 : listen to his ''You Don't Know What Love Is'' version)
      John Coltrane, in 1956/1957 began to do training sessions in private, one to one with Rollins at the demand of Coltrane who wanted to improve his improvisation and sound and considered Sonny as the best tenor man of their generation - notice that Coltrane is older of 4 or 5 years than Rollins ;
Trane has became one of Rollins best friends and they continue to do training alone together in the sixties.
Sonny Rollins is the first saxman to have recorded in trio session with bass and drums (Max Roach) in a period where all the jazz sax men recorded in quartet formation (with piano).
Sonny Rollins is the first to have done a saxophone solo concert, yes just Sonny Rollins with no prepared themes improvizing for more 1 jour if I well remember.
      Oliver Nelson,
who has blowed maybe the most beautiful-classious tenor solo ever (on ''Stolen Moments'' 1961) and who is a genius of arrangements and band leader/conductor,
      Mr Oliver Nelson said
(on ''The Blues And The Abstract Truth'' original liner notes, 1961)
that, as nearly every tenor of his generation, his two saxophone influences are Coltrane & Rollins.
Sonny Rollins is the first jazz tenor saxman to have recorded with congas (Candido Camero) and bass (Sonny's man Bob Cranshaw) and the result is wild, rough and genius as on ''Jungoso'' (1962)
Listen to 'Jungoso' man : please
nobody has played like that with such punch and extreme groove and melodic ideas
You cited very talented sax guys, with strong individuals and recognizable styles, which is already rare,
But Sonny Rollins, at least as soloist and tenor sax improvizer, is one of the greatest : in the same level to me of -chronologically- Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Oliver Nelson and Joe Henderson... and also Michael Brecker whose technics -too technical and perfect maybe- tone and creativity have influenced every saxmen the after him (...I think altist Anthony Braxton influenced very much Brecker for the high complexity and fastness combined but it's just my feeling, maybe it's not the case)
Listen to ''Sonny Meets Hawk'' :
Sonny Rollins is the only 'young' saxman who has shared an album with the jazz sax daddy Coleman Hawkins.
Or just listen to the track ''God Bless The Child''
(1962, again with the purest Jim Hall...
Oh, I'm thinking : Jim Hall, marvellous guitarist, said that his best playings are with Sonny Rollins in 1961 and 1962)
      !-)
