Hartlepool's problems started directly after the Papa Johns semi-final defeat against Rotherham last season. After that the club went into freefall and finished not far off the relegation places. Graham Lee was sacked. Paul Hartley was then made manager at the start of this season and the results were diabolical. I think Hartley thought the standard of football would have been the same as his tenure with Scottish lower league however he got a big shock.
Did not win the first 11 matches beginning with a 0-4 hammering at Walsall and reached a peak with a 0-6 drubbing against Everton kids! in the Papa Johns. I think there were a lot of issues behind the scenes. So in essence we were relegated due to those first few months. I believe if John Askey was appointed earlier maybe we could have survived.
