Sitting in the hospital recovering from heart surger, my wife was worried about me loosing a 6 figure income. I'm now permanently disabled. So, I sat down and took money from savings. I paid of the little I owed on the house and put 6 months income in my wife's checking account. Then I showed her what was left. (I've been saving 12-15% for 20+ years for retirement.) The family decided that I was not so stupid. I may not have reached my 3 mil retirement goal, but my younger wife will not have to worry about money.
