Another great show that was a great break down. Balance is key every time I think about that I always go back to the 2012 season where we could put up 65 points and still come away with a lose. Hopefully this year we can establish balance. Also great call back to the land shark Chris Neild in my opinion he is probably one of the top 5 most underrated Mountaineers of all time. We need another guy just like him.
    Thanks for the show

Thanks for tuning in, Brian, and thanks for the kind words. Yes, as someone who attended that ‘12 Baylor-WVU game, it never seemed like the points Geno-Stedman-Tavon and others put up were enough. Same about Chris Nield-one of my all-time favorites.

WVU's defense was already hit hard with injuries before the season even started. We lost a couple during the first few games, and we lost Burks & Lathan during TCU. Which was the last straw. A defense can usually take losing a quality player or two, and still maintain a certain base level of play, but we didnt have good depth last year at LB or DB, and those injuries were just to much to overcome.
A lot of those problems are solved this year. We have the talent, skillsets, & experience needed at every position group this season to shine on both sides of the ball. If we remain mostly healthy, I think this team can have a CFP caliber season.
DL: Martin, EddieV, Russel, Redwood, Jackson
    DE/OLB Bradley & French
LB: Lathan, Trotter, Cutter, Carrico, Faverus, Biser Brothers
    Spear: Collins & Jennings
    Safety: Burks, Joseph, Wilson, Wilcox
CB: Hollis, Garnes, Tarnue, Fagan, Spells, Jackson Brothers
I suspect our base defense will look like:
    3 DL
    1 DE/OLB
    2 MLB
    1 Spear
    2 Safeties
    2 CBs
Though, I suspect we can also see following fronts:
    2 DL
    2 DE
    2 LB
    ____
    2 DL
    2 DE
    3 LB
    _____
    4 DL
    2 MLB
    __
    3 DL
    3 LB
    ----
    4 DL
    1 DE
    1 LB
    ____
    3 DL
    2 DE
    2 LB
Lesley's defense has always been multiple, which I like. WVU lost a lot of talent in the portal during the first couple years because our NIL collective was late to the party. Losing Mesidor & Jefferson really hurt on the DL, imagine just how great our DL would have been with those two players the last 2 years. It would have been a really good to Elite level DL. However I think the staff has done a good job the last 2 seasons doing damage control and rebuilding it from the impact players we lost. As long as we remain healthy, I think this defense has the talent & versatility to play good enough to put us in position to win big games. Maybe Im wrong, but as good as this offense will be, as consistent & explosive(when it wants to be) with the diverse array of skillsets this offense will be able to maintain superior ToP, reducing pressure on defense. This isnt a 2018 explosive type of offense that will put undue reps & pressure on the defense. We will be run biased, this will reduce defensive exposure, reps, etc, and help them be a bit more fresh throughout the season.
With Bradley & French being quality impact players, I think we see the staff find ways to put them both on the field at the same time. Using a 2 DL, 2 DE, 2 LB front a bit more than we;ve seen in the past. Or a 3 DL, 2 DE, 1 LB structure. The good thing is the staff has a good amount of versatility at their disposal with the DL, DE, & LB combos.
In the end, the quality of this defense I believe will revert back to how healthy we are able to be through the season. If we dont lose Martin, Bradley, French, Lathan, Trotter, Burks, Hollis, Joseph, & whoever proves to be the other best CB, if we can keep that group on the field as much as possible, we have a shot. Obviously Eddie V, Jackson, Redwood, will also be important players on the DL too, as we saw last season the benefit of being able to rotate players to keep them fresh. While our DL depth isnt quite as good this season, we have enough to maintain a healthy rotation, esp if we are mostly playing 2-3 DL, 1-2 DE, 2-3 LB sets.
The question marks here is just how good will Hollis, Joseph, Garnes, Tranue, Fagan, & Spells be this year... We added healthy #'s, so I would wager a few of them work out and play on a quality level.
A massive boost for this defense is the quality & style of offense we will have this year. Which is very different than a Dana H "Explosive Offense", so I think Brown realizes we can be both consistent, explosive when we want+need to be, and take pressure off the defense too. The quality of this offense will go a long way to help. As good of opponents we face, theyll be a few shootouts this season, it doesnt matter how good a defense may be, sometimes its just one of those games where both offenses are on fire. In those cases, I think we have the tools in place needed to slow them down enough, unlike with previous eras...

WVU wasn’t hit hard pre-szn. They lost Trotter & Miller and I think Floyd may have been limited the first couple weeks, but yes, the TCU win-in the words of King Theoden from LOTR Two Towers-“was paid for w/many lives” Burks, Lathan, Faverus, Milum, and Rimac… and that’s right when WVU started to lose some quitters too.
But still, watch the OU game back and WVU was flat out beat from the get-go. Got ran all over. Couldn’t create pressure on Gabriel. Got beat over the top again and again. Stoops looked like the second coming of Wes Welker.
I like your argument and can agree w/it to a point, IF Lesley gets more dynamic & aggressive w/his blitzes.

You're right about the linebacker situation, particularly since Kpogba was a liability as often as he was an asset. Linebackers were essentially absent in pass defense, opening the middle of the field and putting impossible pressure on the safeties.

Joseph will play safety or Spear, completely unrelated to the Spur, which is what French plays. The defense could best be called either a 3-Flex or a 3-2 Flex since the most consistent spots will be three down linemen and two interior linebackers. Beyond that, there may be a Spur, Spear, two corners, and two Safeties, may be two Spurs, the Spear may be closer to a linebacker, closer to a safety, or closer to a corner (nickel).
Meanwhile, Lesley has no "room." He moves around as needed, which has been fairly well covered by coaches and media.

I think when Bradley and French are both on the field together, it will be on obviously passing downs and there is a good chance one of the D-tackles will be coming out and it will be a defacto 4 man front. I don’t think French is going to start because run stopping could be an issue with him and I do think Bradley is going to be Fantastic this year.
Agree we should’ve added a DT because of the Mcyntire injury, but maybe they feel some of the younger guys are ready to play.

I do agree we need to stay aggressive on D, don’t let teams nickel and dime us.

I was watching the sugar bowl and the fiesta bowl last night and that was the first thing that came to mind is how much the defense was rushing the quarter back. At the very least it disrupted many plays and at the most many sacks.

      @Carson-Fox  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Bingo. Just read a stat last week either in PFF or The Athletic that WVU had the lowest “pass rush win rate” of any team in the Big 12 last yr, despite its sack & TFL #s, which, as I chronicled this offseason, predominantly came in the bowl game & against WVU’s “weaker” opponents. I have some confidence-because the effort will be so high at home in a big game-that the defense will show well. I’m more worried about October & November. It’s a long stretch, as we witnessed a year ago.

  • @rnemtp5350
    @rnemtp5350 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the 3-3-5 is better anyway. And since when is a ten win season and a Gator Bowl victory a bad year? The defense had to deal with Megatron, who would later be the dominate reciever in the NFL, and the offense had to start Owen Schmidt at tailback instead of Fullback( he did great, racking up a hundred rushing yds. in his only game in that capacity)in that game. Louisville who beat us as conference champ that year won the Orange Bowl, so lamenting a close loss to them to finish 2nd in the Big East is a little disingenous. Remember all those seasons winning BCS bowls against the champs of the Big 12, SEC, and ACC were with a 3-3-5 odd stack with Grant Wiley leading the nation in forced fumbles, Sam Bradford spending the Fiesta Bowl lying on his back looking up at the lights, and a 99 yd. Fumble return for a TD. Heck, Clemson didn't start scoring much until the walk-ons and waterboys were playing defense. All that with the 3-3-5.

I mean, all of the Big 12 teams are going to submit projected starters on-paper here in a couple weeks for Media Day. WVU only has a few starting positions “up for grabs” in fall camp, which is a tremendous thing. Shows how far this program has come w/roster mgmt.

Love that, but I hope you understood where my confusion was coming from-hiring an OLB coach, while not re-hiring a S coach, when the scheme is still a 3-3-5 🤔 If that means Jeff Koonz is able to spend more time on special teams bc he’s *only* coaching 1 MLB, then great. But essentially giving ShaDon Brown 5 positions to manage (all DBs) seems like a lot to me.

  • @calebhudson302
    @calebhudson302 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's because WVU runs a 3-2-6. They pretend they don't, but it's three dl, 2 lbs(1 MLB and one bandit/passrush), one nickel, one s/lb hybrid, and two free safety. It is sometimes called an eastern 3-4. But the will/spur plays the opposite of the spear to the boundary but gets coverage calls. They only line up together on an overload.
There are four hybrid positions to look like a 4-3, 4-1, 3-3-5, 3-4 or 3-2-6.
    Bandit (rush/LB)
    Will/Spur(LB/safety) called spur this year
    Spear (nickle/saftey)
    Cat (free/strong)
Lastly, the defense is cut in 2 when the play is called. You have a front-five call and a back-six call. That's why sometimes WVU gives up big runs because the spear or will/spur missed their run fit coming from the secondary. Also, why wvu is one of the top simulated pressure teams because they mostly don't blitz the secondary and have to play Smoke and Mirrors with the front 5.

WVU's 2023 Defense was #1 in team sacks @ 33, #3 at tackles for loss(behind Texas and Oklahoma, and #4 in passes defended behind Texas, Oklahoma, and Iowa State. Texas and Oklahoma are gone. All this with the 3-3-5.

    • @Carson-Fox
      @Carson-Fox  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think I briefly touched on this during my video, but the UNC Duke’s Mayo Bowl skewed these #s. 7 sacks & 11 TFLs were had in that match-up alone.
How’d WVU play against its “toughest” opponents in ‘23:
PSU: 38 pts allowed, 478 yds allowed, no TOs, 3 sacks, 6 TFLs
OKST: 48 pts allowed, 491 yds allowed, 2 TOs, 1 sack, 6 TFLs
OU: 59 pts allowed, 644 yds allowed, 1 TO, 2 sacks, 5 TFLs
If we fans expect WVU to take a step forward defensively, I don’t see it coming in the form of regurgitation of the same old, same old.

Yes, I do, and I think I mentioned this, but when WVU’s needed the defense to get a win, they’ve responded. Last yr, I think about pitt, TTU, TCU, UCF… so they’re sooo close. Just need to make a few tweaks. I’m hoping a switch to a heavier front, getting a healthy LB core back in step, and BEING MORE AGGRESSIVE like they were in the Mayo Bowl, are the solutions.

We will struggle this season with 3-4 defense... IF we can not control the line of scrimmage... we will lose many games... 6-7 games this season... 3-4 is a good prevent defence ... or it is a great "DE" IF you have THREE Bruce Smith's as your three down linemen...
