  • John performs at the Deer Creek Amphitheater in Indianapolis on a national TV broadcast on July 4, 1992 during his Whenever We Wanted tour (apologies for the weather warning that is constantly on the screen).
For a better quality version of this show, without the on-screen weather warning, check my other video here: • John Mellencamp - Live...

Saw Mellencamp, U2, Billy Joel and Bruce play over the years in the same venue. Mellencamp in '92 was a force of nature. The layered, no compromise guitars, Kenny on those skins and Lisa's haunting fiddle. Simply perfect.

I remember watching this on TV and taping it and watching the VHS many times afterwards. I was 7 years old.
I loved JCM when I was a little kid and I was anticipating this televised concert. The TV guide said it started at 7, the newspaper said it started at 8 (discrepancy in reporting, not time zones). So my dad called the TV station to get the start time from the horse’s mouth so we didn’t miss it.
Such a good time to grow up in America.

Glad I saw him a few times during this era. Lisa's fiddle played the same role in his band as Big Man's sax in the E Street Band.

IMO, these were the best years for JCM (1987-1992)....the band, the back up singers, etc. Lisa Germano was such a bad ass on the fiddle. It just all came together perfectly.

@J. Smith, couldn't agree more. Don't get me wrong, he had great albums before and after, but I saw him live in 1988 in Louisville, Ky., and for my money Mellencamp's Lonesome Jubilee album and tour in 1987 & 1988 was him at his pinnacle. Like you said, the band then with Lisa Germano on fiddle, Kenny Arnoff on drums, his back-up singers, etc...were flat out popping.

Tightest band ever ! The guitar work is amazing. Kenny Aronoff is the best ! I met Kenny and the band when they did Saturday Night Live. Rehearsal was on Wednesday afternoon and a friend got me in to see it. Mellencamp rocked covers during sound check. They were amazing. I spoke to Kenny about his kit. He was a true gentleman ! I was 21 years old. LoL.

I know that's a hard one for any artist / band , he's got one Hell of a set list ( hit list ) now he has to weed out , you forget the killer songs he recorded sometimes , be cool if he'd have a 3 day weekend show, w/ camping , where he could play 30 songs and really get the value of his music via 40+ years

@@PaulJackson729 all names you mentioned are drummers who played in bands. So how should mainstream listeners hear the name Aronoff. Only guys like me who read EVERYTHING in the liner notes notice the names. Nobody outside the business knew Lukather as an axeman - until he played with Toto as a member. But he already was a session cat for years with a big name in the business. I do not like this "underrated" thing. Aronoff is a well known drummer, Multiple grammy winner and platin records player. He is a lot - but never unterrated. Who rated him?

this tour was fantastic...a return to the harder rockin side. I saw them all from Scarecrow (which was his best) through Happy Go Lucky and periodically after that. Live, Death, Love and Freedom was good in its own right but at the show I saw, a lot of people left at intermission. I kept telling them the second half would be the songs you wanna hear, albeit done a little bit differently in some cases. Glad I saw that stripped down version but now everything has that feel and not nearly excited to ever see him again. The first time I saw him was in a bar in Cincinnati, before he became popular.

I was lucky enough to see this show 3 times! Once in Bloomington on Little 500 weekend and twice at Deer Creek. I missed the show on the 4th, but remember listening to the simulcast on my way home from my grandparents’ house. I would pay a lot to see THIS show a few more times! This was back when John and the band really rocked! It wasn’t the same after John Cascella died. In recent years I haven’t gone to see John because he stops too much to preach his political agenda. I loved back in the day when he just went from one song to the next! I have always been a huge fan and always will be! True American Music!!

Poorly edited but well filmed National TV broadcast version on VHS. Wouldn't be difficult to tidy up.
A fun high energy band probably JM's second best band line up ever. No Larry Crane or Crystal Taliefero. Featured here are :
    * An extremely well balanced guitar trio of Mike Wanchic, David Grissom and Toby Meyers with the phenomenal Kenny Aronoff on drums and the versatile Pat Peterson and Jenny Douglas-McRae on background vocal to add pizazz.
    * An integral element of the band's sound with the exceptional Lisa Germano on fiddle (in a dress) and the amazing John Cascella on accordian is still intact as this was recorded four months before JC's unexpected early death.
Great set list with 'Cherry Bomb' to close this show before the credits.
Seriously overdue that John Mellencamp hit the vaults and released best concert footage on DVD from his best band line ups from mid 80s to early 90s. Bloody worry otherwise he might outlive us. Other band line ups since have been lame in comparison. There has never a reasonable version of a concert from The Lonesome Jubilee Tour released on DVD or even TH-cam. Sheer madness after seeing concerts on TLJT and talking to people like myself who attended the shows and still rave about them in Australia.
Sincere thanks for posting this. Much appreciated.
    Gaz
