    Basis: virtue, morality, accomplishment, solitude, sign of the mind, guarding of the sense doors.

    'That suffering will be worse than someone who is not aware of the right context. Because ignorance is bliss to a certain degree.' This is so true. Like a thorn in your side. Once you've clearly seen the peace and satisfaction brought about by spiritual discipline you become acutely aware of the folly and pain that comes from falling away from it.

    In the moment of death I might find out. No matter what I or other people say what I am or what I am not - stupid or enlightened - death will brutally reveal if I fool myself or not. It's the PhD. I believe thinking too much about attainment (of oneself or of another) is just another burden.It's the dukkha of BEING a Sotapanna or of being something else (higher or lower or same). Being something leads 100 percent to dukkha. Also it can give rise to the conceit-trap.... if someone tells you "You are a Sotapanna" or if you guess "Hey, look at that ! I must be a Sotapanna. I must tell the world". It must have had a reason why the Buddha didn't point it out much. In Germany we have a fairy tale called "Hans im Glück" (Happy Hans). The quintessence "If you have nothing, you are free and happy". Maybe the Buddha would add "If you are nothing you are even more free and happy."

    thanx you for that clarification. How do you manage it in the "outside life"?all these so call material "issues" are obstructing the work, trying to make us break the precept at every single minute...... in so many ways.... but not everyone is ready to become a monk or a nun. :-)

    Venerable Ajahn 🙏 There is view that once realised stream entry one shouldn't go further in order to reborn as humain for 7 times, because 500 mahakapas in Pure Abodes are longer. What do you think about this "strategy"? Thank you 🙏

    • @HillsideHermitage
      @HillsideHermitage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      That view is misinformed. A sotapanna will not go through the immediate succession of seven human births, but instead be reborn in all sorts of realms in the meantime (but not lower than a human one). Like King Bimbisara did in DN 18.
      So it's seven human births AT MOST, but how many other births in between, who knows. Either way, sotapannas time will be longer than anything a non-returner would have to endure in Pure Abodes.

      But the sutta says Gods and Humans, not only Humans: "If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of three fetters, they have at most seven rebirths. They will transmigrate at most seven times among gods and humans and then make an end of suffering."

    • @HillsideHermitage
      @HillsideHermitage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That is a mainstream translation of Saupadisesa sutta, that is not something we'd agree with it. The phrase in question "sattakkhattuparamam" means "seven times at most" and has no mention of "rebirth" that is commonly included in translation. The sutta continues by saying what it is that is left for seven times at most: running through and wandering on between gods and humans.
      So, literally it means that seven times at most one with the Right view will "cross" between human and deva realms, but it does not mean that a single crossing means a single "birth". And for that see the DN 18 mentioned above, where King Bimbisara, remembers 14 of his births among various gods AFTER he crossed from a human realm when he became a sotapanna earlier.
      Thus, if there is any mistake with our original reply above, it's in the fact that a sotapanna might even have MORE than just 7 human births in total, since each crossing back into this realm might entail many more births. And same goes for the deva realms.
      But none of this is essential. Knowing how many crossings or "wanderings on" one who might be a sotapanna has, is irrelevant. What is relevant is to not hold the view, that the original commenter asked about, that is somehow better to be a sotapanna rather then anagami, which might result in someone justifying not making effort towards abandoning sensuality and ill will in this very life while they still can.

    • @TwoFoot
      @TwoFoot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Bhantr, thank you for the response but I am confused. King Bimbisara attained sotapanna under Gotama Buddha, so in DN 18 he's talking about past lives before he was a sotapanna.
