Whoever this teachers is, he is absolutely generous!. My tango walk is not bad, i got a few nice additional tips. Thank you so much. Anyone who called his teaching 'wrong', I would appreciate very much if you would articulate what is wrong!. Trust me most teachers will not give so much to their students, for if they do students improve fast and they fear will not come back for lessons perpetually. I am sorry, if you have issues, please explain, do not 'declare' something bad.
I've been dancing for a few years and learned from several instructors. This is by far the most comprehensive breakdown of the walk. I've learned from some world champion dancers but they still haven't been able to verbalize such a fundamental thing and it's usually based on "feeling." This however is broken down into concrete steps. Love it.
Hands down the best ever explanation of the walk. I've danced for nearly five years under various teachers and never had it explained at a fraction of the level as this instructor. A must view video of the thousands out there.
I agree with you.. he also says a couple of times.. they are EXAGGERATING posture etc. so people can see.. He has broken down the dance really well and explained each portion of the dance. I personally like that he explained so much that I didn't know. I've learnt a few new things from this video ..
In my opinion, it is the best course of tango walking technique description. Detailed up to pain :) No room for guessing:), unsureness,I recommend to everybody interested in right walking. All figures beauty come from right walking technique, right stepping your feet. That is painful truth:) and require patient repetition and every day drills. for min 100 days and than repetition every week.
What we are teaching here is a functional Tango walk. Watch any top Tango dancer and notice that yes, while only walking in a straight line you can get away with straight legs ( I do it myself ) but as soon as it's time to do anything else the knees bend to be able to maneuver. I have been studying Argentine Tango intensively since 1985 from the top names. Many have done workshops in my studio. Straight legs make it impossible to balance well, create rhythm or connect comfortably to a partner.
This video only demonstrates linear walking. I don’t think this is a great lesson on Argentine tango walk, maybe it’s ballroom tango but not Argentine. Edit: I just noticed that you are the dancer in the video. I’ve only been doing this two years. My first lessons were in BA. I’ve never seen the walk taught this way. Teachers always qualify their technique by saying its how they teach and someone else may do it differently.
I looked at a video of my practice last week and was horrified to see the posture in my walk. Frantically, I searched the Internet and found this video. Yes, the guy talks a lot, but I've got a couple of videos on TH-cam where I've received the same complaint. Sometimes you've got so much data you feel you need to give out in order to really give the best instruction. Anyway, long story short, my posture and walk are much better thanks to tips I got from this video. Thanks, Dave!
Thank you for your hard work. I have been dancing tango since 1988 (every week) and I disagree with your teaching, but congratulate you for your effort and for coming forward to try to help out beginners. Bravo!
Wow, after reading all the negative comments, I thought that the video would be at least a mess of controversy...Well, I am certain that this instruction is EXCELLENT, FROM BEGINNING TO END !! ..and like the title says: the best ever instruction on walking that I've ever seen by far.. the poster should disable the comments here because they are dead wrong...this is the SOCIAL DANCE beautifully explained !
I just finished with the introduction to Argentine Tango class on friday. These videos are great reviews and helps me with my practice. I will begin Argentine Tango workshops over the next several weeks. Thanks for the great hints. I practice these on my exercise walks I take every other day.
Indeed they gave teachers gave it all. However, you may have missed it, the instruction is delivered in 3 levels of difficulty. You may choose to transition into higher level of difficulties once you mastered the basics. I am at advanced level, I still found base level instruction refreshing.
I completely agree Ram. I have been having trouble with my walk because I kept on allowing my landing leg to become straight. The "triangle" concept does make sense... because instead of using our ankles to push off, the triangle allows the calves and hamstrings to directly power thru the walk. Especially with the sometimes heavy partners.
Thank you so much...It is the learning to walk the Tango way that gives me such problems. There's never enough time in classes to practice this. Brilliant Video.
He stated that she is exaggerating the point. They're emphasizing the triangle. A lot of dancers wear loose pants, and it gives the illusion the legs being straight.
There is no one true way to execute the tango walk. If the couple is balanced, connected, and dncing to the music, it works, regardless of individual variations in style. There is much here that I really like. I have been teaching what I call the "phase shift" for years - that the backward walker's weight change is later than the forward walker's. I like the emphasis on using the whole foot - I find it works much better for balance and energy. I do not like the follower's style. I find dancing on strictly bent knees to be ugly. But if she is balanced, connected, and responsive, it is not wrong, i have known many longtime, admired Tangueras who dance a similar manner.
+Julianna Lin Thankyou for your comment Julianna. The 'leave the toe' method works for small steps, if you take larger movements the rolling the foot method is smoother and more musically accurate. It"s hard to understand but the use of the heel, flat, ball, toe and tip of toe fills up the music more. Your dancing will have much more depth.
in that same vein I could say that Any italian food that has tomatoes isn't actually italian food but american food or mexican food. Why? because tomatoes aren't even native to Italy they were brought back when they discovered the new world. Now why do we consider italian food with tomatoes still italian food, because the idea that tomatoes are foreign to italy left the current social semantics. Same as latino/a is now semantically known as someone from mexico + central/south america.

For those with more than a passing interest in Tango (as danced in Argentina), it will take years to unlearn the bad technique that is presented in this video.
Uh, sorry can't say this method is effective or useful. This kind of teaching does little to help create skillful dancing. This fellow is pretty much making this up. I have worked with dancers exposed to similar methods and they are confused and poorly trained. My caveat is for students. It's a dead giveaway that when the teacher talks this much and mixes up terms and music and technique, then the student will struggle. Can't say this is worth watching.
This instruction has nothing to do with ball-room style tango... maybe because he deconstructs every portion of the dance but what he is nicely showing is the dance as danced socially in the milongas of Buenos Aires.. it's perfectly observed and communicated....surprising!
I dont know much about tango... but the thing is... i dont see how a girl wearing high heels be more stable by landing heel first and not balls first... wouldn't we get more unstable that way and risk twisting ankles?
So glad you brought that up. Never put full weight on a heel! Always move most of your weight from ball of foot to ball of foot. Merely glide through the heel lightly while most of the weight is still on the back ball for smoother movement and to express the music more accurately. Especially useful for taking large steps.
It's all about being balanced and centered, and the transfer of weight from one foot to the other. And remember, those are dance heels, which are made for heel leads and drags.
Dear Ellen and others, With due respect to you all... You are attaching various labels to teachers and their dancing. None of you are able to articulate a single specific problem with what is being taught!. Sorry this is not helpful. Kind regards, Ram

Both come from Italy.Latin America is only an area where languages derived from the Latin are spoken . That's it. The person you're talking about is an Ibero-Indian

Excellent instruction for anyone who would like to learn the proper walk and balance for dancing.
Of all the videos I watched so far this is by FAR the best one. Thank you I finally feel like I get it a little!!

Great teacher!! Explanation of the rythm within a step, and landing on heel helped me a lot. Thank you.

I was always taught by many guest instructors from BA to leave the toe on the ground when taking back steps.....

He already addressed that in level 1, its hard to watch video someone uploaded for free, right!

Why do dance instructors insist on wearing black pants so viewers cannot tell which leg is moving.
