  • This Ice Trikes Adventure Recumbent Trike has been fitted with a Tongsheng TSDZ2 electric bike conversion kit and 36v 17ah battery.
    Check out my blog for more information on electric bike conversion kits: ebikechoices.com
    The TSDZ2 is a popular solution for adding electric assist to a recumbent tricyle. Although the Tongsheng motor isn't specifically designed for recumbents it is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to add e-assist to your trike.

    Link to the 36v battery: ebay.us/OcH32U [affiliate link]

    This is my third recumbent trike electric conversion and I have to say I'm totally hooked!
    There are a few things to consider when choosing the right kit for your trike.
    1. How much power do you need?
    2. Battery range
    3. Added weight of motor and battery
    4. Potential long-term reliability issues with the motor
    5. Hub motor vs crank motor.
    The Tongsheng TSDZ2 is generally a good motor, but like all electric motors it is not perfect. The main weak points with this motor are the blue nylon gear (inside the motor), Sprag clutch (one-way bearing) and Torque sensor.
    If you are going to be covering a high mileage or using this motor for long-distance touring then I would definitely recommend taking the correct tools and some spare parts.
    Small hub motors are generally more reliable in the long-term and may be more suited to long distance riding.
    Having said that the Tongsheng TSDZ2 is an excellent little motor and costs a fraction of the price of a Shimano Steps e-assist system. I personally haven't experienced any issues so far, and I have installed nearly 30 TSDZ2 motor's in the last 12 months.
    If you have any questions, please ask away!
    Thanks for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe.

    I have this motor on my Catrike 559. Love it. Rode in a Metric Century today and battery was out of juice at 30 miles. A bit surprised as I’ve ridden nearly 30 on previous rides and still has 5 power bars. My only complaint is the battery piece that is attached to the battery mount (I have the same T-Cycle mount). The piece that comes with the battery that has the power cables started breaking. Supplier trying to get a replacement. Nice install job.

    Informative and helpful video. Ordering this through aliexpress seems to be straightforward. However, as it is to fit onto an ICE Sprint, where do I get the steel P clip from or does it come in the kit anyway? How do I get a cable extension? I have watched the video and it seems to be a fairly easy fit but do you know the crank lengths? I ride on 155mm as I have knee and hip problems and this relives some of the pressure on the joints. Depending on the length of the cranks in the kit, can I get shorter ones from somewhere?

    You didn't need any other extension cables? (apart from the speed sensor)

    • @driewiel
      @driewiel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ebikechoices Yes I have connectors and tools for the batteries. But I'm not eve sure there are extension cables or the display? And maybe throttle and brake levers? I do need the brake levers with sensors on my Bafang. So I can shift while the motor doesn't put pressure on the chain. But perhaps with the torque sensor of the Tongsheng I can shift more easily without having to squeeze the brake lever?
      I'm still not sure which one to pick, Tonsheng or Bafang. I love my Bafang (500 Watt). Although I do often ghost pedal. The Tonsheng is more like natural pedaling from what I have seen. In this case that's what I want.

    • @driewiel
      @driewiel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ebikechoices Thank you. This will make my decision easier. Yes I often feel in a hurry with the Bafang. You're constantly trying to keep up with the pace. If it wants to go 25km/h, I have to pedal exactly 25km/h.
      But I do want a throttle, legal or not. There are situations when it gets you out of trouble. I can't easily hop off like on a normal bike. Especially not with my solar panel roof on my trike. And if the brake levers come with it then I'll have those too. Although I already expected there's not as vital as on the Bafang.
      The Tonsheng is probably going to be more efficient on the batteries the way I pedal. I should go to the hospital to have the damn varicose veins fixed. But as it is right now I do a couple of pedal strokes and then let it roll again. Each time the Bafang draws all the power from the battery. I can imagine it being more gradual with the Tongsheng. So I can do more distance. Speed isn't important. And to be honest, in the Netherlands you don't really need e-assist unless you're old or have medical issues like those legs of mine If it wasn't for that I would not even put a motor on my precious ICE QNT. Somehow you ruin a perfect human powered machine.

    Did you have to remove the entire original crankset AND bottom bracket parts before placing the TSDZ2 in? Or did you leave the bottom bracket and simply slide the TSDZ2 into that? Thanks!

  • @driewiel

    Any differences between Bafang and Tongsheng?

    • @driewiel
      @driewiel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ebikechoices I had the Bafang on my ICE QNT for a couple of weeks. I kept the motor in place with an exhaust clamp and DIY strip of metal. Pretty easy job.
      And yes I did get the 36v 500watt because my homebuilt solar trike isn't the lightest with my 90 kilo on it.
      I do agree the Bafang doesn't feel very natural. One of the downsides of Bafang is it pushes you to always go 1km faster to save battery. But with my bad leg I always pedal a couple of strokes and let it roll again. I really should have that leg fixed soon I have the money. Insurance wont's cover the first 500 Euro each year. Healthcare privatization: fantastic.
      The Tongsheng seems a better alternative for riders who don't want to be completely assimilated into a Borg. Very helpful info. Thanks.
