Very Nice video... John and Margaret McCoy are my 3rd great grand parents. John Buttermilk and Nancy are my 2nd great grandparents... I can tell you all of the info that you would like to know about the old cabin location if you'd like. I built the stone for John Buttermilk about 15 years ago, have only been back a very few times since then.. The property was a larger boundary back in those days. It was given to Old William McCoy by the government for his service in the Revolutionary War. It was then given to John McCoy (son)... John and Margaret McCoy left Brushy in the 1830s and lived around Hatfield Tunnel in WV until the beginning of the Civil War. Their son John Buttermilk moved back to brushy in the 1850s and built the log house and lived there. He sent for his parents John and Margaret when the civil war broke out. They lived there until their death. The old house and property was later given to buttermilk's son William Trigg McCoy... It exchanged hands afew times in the 20th century.... Feel free to msg me if you have any questions about the place and people. Thanks
Do you have any info on John buttermilk son George. George was my husband's great great grandfather. His name was George Washington Mccoy married to Elliza Jane. His daddy was born in pike County. We don't know much we have never had a family Bible. My father in laws mother pass away when he was a boy or young teenager. The woman are the ones that seem to pass down this kind of information. Thank you
On the tombstone of John Buttermilk McCoy's listed children is Harrison F. McCoy who is my great Grandfather. I would love to know where he is buried. and more about him. My grandmother died when mom was a toddler. Grandfather remarried and i did not know any of the McCoy family. Do you know anything about him or his kin?
@@nancystevens7447 I don't believe that they had school there, But with it being in such a rural area, they may have at one point in time.. It was lived in my many different families up until the 1960s. Including church services. The house and property was up for sale in the late 90s and was sold not long afterwards. The owner has intentions of fixing it, but I'm not sure if there will be any progress in the future or not...
I too am a McCoy descendant. In 1991 my aunt published a McCoy family history book and i am recognising some of these names! Thank you for showing us some of our history! Love it!
Couple of things on this video. First, again, I would like to tell Miss Heather Happy Birthday. May God bless you with many more. Secondly, it is ashamed that the old cabin couldn't have been found 30 - 40 years ago and be restored and preserved. That way, it would've stood another 100 years. Timbers that built that cabin had to be 18 to 24 inches or more wide, cut down, hand hewn, hand cut joints, amazing huge trees. The add on, probably a kitchen was added much later, you could see that they were cut on a saw mill. Would've been a great old cabin. Lastly, thank y'all for going all those extra miles to bring us these stories. Leo, do me a favor being you're there and I'm here, give Heather a big Texas birthday hug, and I'll let you give her a big birthday kiss. God bless y'all for all that y'all do. Stay safe out there on your travels.
I wish they would restore the cabin, I'm sure many people would be interested in visiting this beautiful site!! Thank you so much for this, I really did enjoy this!!
Circuit riders were preachers who rode miles and miles to different churches on their circuit route, because many communities didn’t have preachers, so these men rode to one church one Sunday and another the next Sunday, and so on. I had 3rd, 4th and 5th great grandfathers who did this here in Kentucky, and they were Methodist preachers, so it must have been common for the Methodist organization. Happy Birthday Heather!
I would love to sell my house in Michigan and move down to pikesville after all that's where my family is from besides Harlan county Kentucky I could do so much with so little to that thank you guys for showing as well as being so respectful God bless
But you have a wonderful, happy birthday, Heather you deserve it such a beautiful awesome story. I really loved it. You have got a sweet partner for the rest of your life that itself is amazing and beautiful. Well God bless you both and thank you for sharing. I can’t wait for your next video.
Very interesting! Just found your channel and I'm subscribing 🎉 Thank you for adventuring and taking the time to bring us along while educating us. History lives on. ❤
I can remember 8 of those old hued log houses within 1 hours walk from my house. Only one remains today. That is some beautiful country, and I enjoyed the cemetery visit and the stories. Thanks for the great video! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHER!! May you celebrate many, many more!
Happy Birthday Heather. Leo a circut rider was a traveling preacher. He had a circuit...or a certain area that he visited on certain Sundays of every month.
Happy B-day, Heather, and thank you for looking for my ancestors' cabin and cemetery. I've been up Brushy Creek in the days before Google Earth, and I didn't even know if it had more than one way in and out then. My Maynard ancestors also lived on Brushy Creek near the Apple Orchard Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery in the early 1800s. Christopher Columbus Maynard supposedly built his first house there under a rock ledge on the opposite side of the road from the church.
Hi Guys...This video only confirms the reason I enjoy watching your videos...Heather it's nice to see you are back..The research that the both of you do and the detail is the reason I follow Hillbillyfiles..Please keep up the great work...D & C from Northeast Pa
A beautiful amazing place. As the saying goes you always get you man. Such a shame the cabin was not preserved before it got to the point of no return. The size of those old growth logs is amazing. Nothing like that todayj.
Happy birthday Heather, I agree 💯 percent that it's too bad this cabin couldn't be helped. I hate to see history ignored to disrepair condition. IT SUCKS!
First of all, a great big Happy Birthday to Heather! 💝 Thank you two for taking us to this beautiful part of the world!! I really liked the opening of this video, as well as the beautiful scenery, and I am happy you found the cemetery and the grave you were looking for.
Happy Birthday Heather! My Grandmother Roxie Elsie Robinette said in her memory notebook that she grew up at the head of one of the Forks of Brushy. Her father's name was Samuel. Thank you both for taking us on your trips.
Ran across this video by accident really enjoyed it my family's from Eastern Kentucky I live in Wyoming now but I knew you were in Kentucky as soon as you started filming started filming
Thanks Leo and Heather. Happy Belated Birthday Heather :) I'm always a day late and a dollar short. So very sad the 2 left this world the same day but maybe a blessing in disguise.
Happy birthday to Heather! We enjoy all your videos! Keep 'em coming! A "Brushy Creek"was mentioned in the Coal Miner's Daughter. Love the old cabin, and it is too bad it can't be preserved!
Hope your birthday was awesome. If anyone deserves a perfect day, it's you Heather. And you don't look a day older. This is my favorite Cemetery visit yet. A beautiful story and a beautiful, final resting place. Another excellent job as usual.
Leo, If you use a mirror about a 12" square you can see the stones better. You angle the mirror to the sun and it will reflect on the stone. Really helps alot.. I've seen it done on TH-cam but have never done it myself.
WoW, you did it again, and on such a special day. In a way you gave a rebirth history day to several young children, who died at ten and eleven years of age. Plus, a first wife that was thought of enough to be buried close to the couple. Happy Birthday, Heather and thanks Leo.
That was so beautiful happy birthday darling. Thank you so much for sharing the story of Hatfield McCoys. I have always loved that story but I hope you have a wonderful wonderful birthday. God bless you and your family. Can’t wait to next adventure.
Happy Birthday Heather. And what a love story. They passed on the same day. I know how cemeteries can be lost my family is buried in Long Island there's the cemeteries aren't there anymore they've been removed and houses put on them and everything it's sad places are lost thank you for sharing this
Happy Birthday🎉 Ms. Heather!!! TY for all you do!!! Leo Your like a lil goat, climbing all those mountains. Idk but couldn't you use a drone when your not sure to guide you to keep from climbing for nothing. Or does the trees and brush get in the way. TY both I enjoy your channel so much. Makes you wonder about where we live and the towns and people that were here before us. I know you keep documents from your travels. You should write a book. With love from the Coalfields of VA.
Great video, loved seeing the old cabin & the graves. It is a shame the cabin can’t be preserved. Happy Birthday Heather, I hope you enjoyed your day exploring!
Happy Birthday Heather! 🎂 🎉 Thanks Leo and Heather for taking us on this adventure. Too bad the gate was locked and the video came to an end. I really enjoyed the video and wanted it to keep going! Lol! 😄 That old cemetery was so beautiful and peaceful on top of that knoll. Man that cabin is just gonna disappear one day and the cemetery too. It's a shame it's like this everywhere. Hard to tell how many stones might have been completely covered over. I watch a guy who is uncovering stones that are completely covered over a foot deep or more with soil and grass. He was using a metal rod and poking down wherever he thought one might be and then digs down to it and puts a flag on it. He had found a bunch. I think it was a cemetery of an old mental hospital. Some had no markers at all. Find A Grave might appreciate this video. They are always needing people to take pics of cemeteries and graves to help people find their dearly departed or just see a pic of a marker if they live too far to travel. I hope you enjoyed your birthday Heather. 🎊 Leo your voice reminds me of a friend of mine and you resemble him too. It's funny how that happens. Lol! Heather you mentioned the Alleghany mountains, I have lived in the Virginia mountains my whole life. They are beautiful and I sure do love them. It's really a small world isn't it? I look forward to more adventures with y'all. Thanks! Have a beautiful blessed day. 🙏
Beautiful scenery and music and it is easy to listen to you talk and you are very kind and respectful. That was a steep climb and very old stones. Seeing the research you did and the old tree and old church and old cabin/church where they died together, all just very picturesque.

This cabin needs to be preserve and classified as a historical building.
Beautiful country

An old cabin AND a scattering of tombstones on a hill ..... What an awesome find -- it doesn't get any better than this!
Couple of things on this video.

Man that's pretty. That clearing is just stunning. Would be a great place for today's youth to grow up on. Wow.
Very interesting! Just found your channel and I'm subscribing 🎉 Thank you for adventuring and taking the time to bring us along while educating us. History lives on. ❤
I learned something new. The difference in "grave yard" and "cemetery"
I didn't realize that Kentucky is so beautiful. Reminds me of the backroads and hills of Frederick County, MD. They refresh the soul!
Happy Birthday Heather. Leo a circut rider was a traveling preacher. He had a circuit...or a certain area that he visited on certain Sundays of every month.
A beautiful testament to love.
Thank You for sharing. These are the real people that birthed a nation.

Those logs look to be in great shape! The owner should contact Log Cabin Builders in West Virginia.
