@ITE You've never seen them live obviously. I have the CD from my show on May 10th 2017 at M&T Bank Stadium, and that is exactly how it sounded live. They release every show's audio. Why you gotta be that guy?
Cuz he doesn't have to do everything anymore. Kirk is doing more of the heavy lifting on the rhythm side, he always has, but even more so now that James can't downpick like he used to. Rob's bass is driving the rhythm and the tripplets that make MetallicA songs seem as thoug they're always pushing forward as hard and fast as possible , which has never, ever been a think for Metallica even with Cliff, it was always 3 dudes cuing off James. And the setlist is all slower, groove type songs. James is basically retired, just up there swaying to Black Sabba.. I mean "metallica" riffs, having fun. But holy shit is he sick of the business, and the fame. Have you listened to the lyrics on M72... "Crown of Barbed Wire".. Being sick of his "Rusty Empire" and someone else should take it...... and just lines from other songs not specifically about his burnout.. "shouting out at the shapes of the nameless no-ones".... He's not talking about Tom Brady, he's talking about himself. He sees MetallicA (and himself), as old, rusty, and stress he no longer needs, and fame he no longer wants. Half the songs on the album are about how fucking sick he is of it. And man... get to all the shows you can for M72 cuz once Kirk blows out his elbow and can't do the downpicking either, these shows will be done, as we know them. Go watch Screaming Suicide live, during the verse, the way James is alternate picking that is age and/or injury. Then watch when they cut to Kirk and how he's playing it (how it's supposed to be played). If both of them have to start alternate picking more often, it would sound more like Surf Rock than Metal.

This is the second coming of Metallica. No longer going through the motions, no longer struggling to write relevant songs, no longer ego first and everything else second, no longer fighting themselves and each other, no longer making excuses. The enthusiasm is visible from every seat in the house, James is on fire and on point (vocally and otherwise). They’re having fun again, they’re at peace with themselves and with being the mighty Metallica. I was not a Black Album fan, I bought Kill ‘em All on vinyl in 1983, Rode the Lightning, even performed Master of Puppets, but begrudgingly accepted the direction they took and respected their success. But in the intervening years, they seemed to struggle to re-establish themselves, through some weak and incoherent albums, none of which I thought accomplished much of anything. Even Hard Wired seemed to be a bunch of decent pieces and parts sort of assembled into a record. No cohesion, no soul. 72 seasons changes everything. Easily the best thing they’ve done since the Black Album, and their enthusiasm and passion are tangible both on the record and especially here in a live setting. Obviously firing on all cylinders. James’ voice is probably the best it has ever been, Lars is like a kid again, Kirk is playing so well and enjoying every bit of it. And Rob!
