I can't say how happy I've been to have discovered this show. I'm a fanatic for Film Noir and to see so many of great ones in this way is fantastic, then to see the regular guests...WOW! This show is great!!!

I'm enjoying your ironic use of the term ''film noir!" I've never seen that term used simply to describe black-and-white film. Usually it refers to a sub-genre of Hollywood film involving thrill, mystery and suspense.
However, I cab readily make one concession about the ''noir'' part: Due to the poor video quality, the Mar. 2, 1950 kinescope of W.M.L. featuring clarinetist and bandleader Artie Shaw was indeed fairly black.

There is no need to feel self-conscious or embarassed about your enthusiasm for the music of Benny Goodman: At 52, I have never cared overly much for music of my own generation, but have always gravitated towards a large segment of the pop music from the turn of the 20th century up until the time I was born (1970 ).
When I discovered Benny and the music of the Big Band Era, I was twelve years old and was absolutely sold on it (the "hot,'' jazzy swing bands, especially). I felt a real sense of alienation from the current music of the day and if I could have, I would have saved my peers ''en masse'' from the noise and bedlam of the so-called "music'' that was everywhere then.
Any radical difference in musical predilection can potentially be a major ''bone of contention" between one and their peers at such a tender age, and so it was indeed, for me and the "motley crew" ( irony fully intended ) that comprised my schoolmates. Unfortunately, I did not have the wisdom to keep my low opinions of their listening habits and tastes to myself; I was not at all circumspect. Thus, I was a lightning rod for controversy, and the onslaught was fierce.
I am pleased to learn that there is something such as music to serve as a common bond between us. I am still happier to think that I do not have to make a point of convincing you what are the merits are of the music called Swing, for you are already ''hep'' to it. There are too many who never advance past the Top 40 of their day, and so they miss a lot of good music.
In the years since middle school, I have come to take a more nuanced view of music. I have adopted instead the philosophy that all music has some level of merit ( or perhaps it is better to say: its own merits ) if one would put aside thieir tendency to criticize and just listen thoughtfully long enough to form a considered opinion. Sometimes, to be sure, I have made some surprising discoveries about music ( and also about those who perform it ! ).
I will never be a fully-fledged pop music person in any modern sense, but here is one of my core beliefs: Rock music in itself is not necessarily "bad'' and there is no reason to altogether dismiss it. However, rock music ought to be just one of many types of music that one can appreciate. Why should anyone limit themselves to that exclusively?
I have not shared all of this with a view to being preachy, all right? I trust that you can understand that. I only have meant to explain a little bit about how my attitudes have evolved through the years. The fact that you are a fan of Swing makes me optimistic that we can be essentially in agreement about this -- that is, my musical philosophy.
      Cordially yours, Richard Laine.

@RICHARD LAINE I grew up with rock but listen mostly to classical nowadays, for decades actually. But I also love Country going back to the Gilley's era to the present. Good music is good music. That certainly includes the Swing era and of course Goodman did classical too.

If you notice, the only time Dorothy slurs her words is during the program's intro and never during the program itself. This leads me to suspect her problem is more nerve related than a substance problem. A combination of first stepping into the camera and having to remember her introduction of the next panelist might be the cause of these occasional slurs. Just my guess.

    • @lynnedonaldson4010
      @lynnedonaldson4010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yes it doesn’t seem like a substance issue because it stops. It does seem more like something is causing the components of her nervous system to become garbled. I wonder if she had migraines or maybe mini strokes. She was a very active woman and probably functioned on very little rest.

Or could it simply have been nerves trying to remember the introduction she had rehearsed? It's one thing to converse with the challenger, John and fellow panelists, another to stare straight into the camera with the red light on and remember one's lines. The 1962 match between Sweden and Austria on Randall's Island in NYC was probably what is quaintly called in the world of soccer "a friendly": a match between two national squads without any particular title at stake. 1962 would have been a somewhat disappointing year for both country's soccer fans.
Sweden had been the host of the 1958 World Cup and made it to the finals before losing to Brazil in the tournament that saw 17 year old Pele emerge on the world stage. He was second in scoring during the World Cup finals with 6 goals, including a hat trick in the semi-final match against France and two goals in the final. But Sweden was eliminated in the qualifying round for the 1962 cup when they were tied with Switzerland at the end of their group stage and lost a playoff game in West Berlin, 2-1, on two second half goals after taking the lead with a goal in the 20th minute. (They had defeated Switzerland, 4-0, in Sweden, but lost to the Swiss squad in Switzerland by that same 2-1 score to force the playoff.) Jens Soderberg was a midfielder, but a member of the Swedish national team's B squad and he played in only three international matches other than friendlies. He did not play in any of the World Cup qualifying matches.
Austria's national team was in decline in 1962. They qualified for the 1958 World Cup finals, but finished last in Group 4, managing only a draw against England. In 1962, Austria was scheduled to compete in Europe's Group 9 qualifying round but they withdrew from the tournament due to lack of funds. Six other nations withdrew from the qualifying rounds, including Denmark and Iceland from Europe.
The 1962 games had been awarded to Chile in an effort to support the sport in developing nations. Not only was Chile still very remote from Europe in terms of world travel, it was still recovering from a devastating 9.5 earthquake (the largest ever recorded) on 5/22/1960 with 50,000 casualties and over 2 million people affected. Four of the original venues were too severely damaged to rebuild in time. Two others were considered financially not viable. The only large stadium venue in Santiago remained usable, two other stadiums were rebuilt and the soccer stadium of a private copper company was made available. While the national stadium seated over 66,000, the other three stadiums all seated around 18,000 each. FIFA regulations that at least 6 venues have a capacity of at least 20,000 seats was overlooked. (In contrast, Sweden had 12 venues in 1958, 4 of which seated over 20,000 and 3 which seated exactly 20,000.)
And yet the remoteness meant that few European fans attended and getting tickets was not a problem. Other than at the national stadium, most of the games that did not involve Brazil had less than 10,000 in attendance.
For only the second time in FIFA World Cup history, Brazil repeated as champions despite the absence of Pele who was injured. On June 17 they defeated Czechoslovakia, 3-1.
The United States was placed in a qualifying group with Mexico and Canada, but Canada withdrew from the tournament. The U.S. drew against Mexico, 3-3, in Los Angeles and lost in Mexico City, 3-0, to be eliminated. Mexico then advanced again in a group with Costa Rica and Netherlands Antilles. At this time, soccer in North America, Asia and Africa was considered so interior that the winners from these regions would have to win a 2 game home and home playoff against a team from Europe or South American to advance to the finals. In 1962, Spain eliminated Morocco with two victories and Yugoslavia defeated South Korea in similar fashion to advance to the final 16 and keep Africa and Asia from being represented in the finals. Mexico advanced to the finals with a win and a draw against Paraguay. They were eliminated in the group stage although they were slightly ahead of Spain on total goals.
A note on the word "soccer": some people think that it is American ignorance to use the word instead of "football", which most of the world calls it. Others think it is to avoid confusion with the American version of football, which may be partly true. But the word is actually a British slang term: a contraction of the phrase "Association Football" which the sport is also called on their side of the "pond". "Soccer" is a word used in other parts of the British Commonwealth (current or former). For example, for as long as I can remember (including their first World Cup appearance in 1974), the Australian national team's nickname is the "Socceroos".

After seeing what percentage Benny demanded from Frank Sinatra's future earnings following him leaving his band (watch the documentary All Or Nothing At All) my perspective has altered somewhat. Fortunately he was pressured by some rather heavy people to amend the contract.

I really wonder what triggered Dorothy's slurred words since this is at least the third time I've seen it happen, and all three were during the introductions. Which makes her "sneeze" explanation seem unlikely. Although supposedly bright lights can make some people sneeze, and the intros were soon after she walked out from backstage. So who knows...
Overall this was an enjoyable episode. We got to see Arlene looking cool in shades, the second guest was a fun character with a big personality, and it's always nice to see the great Benny Goodman.

I looked up Norma Nolan on the internet to see what was available about her after she won the Miss Universe pageant in 1962. There was just a brief biography stating that not much was known about her after winning the pageant and that she had kept her life pretty much private. This really surprises me because I thought somebody winning that kind of an award, that this new title held such prestige, she would be touring the world for a year or so and have movie and TV offers and other kinds of notoriety. In her case it seems she just fell off the map, so to speak.

I'm not sure I would know how a nazi officer shook hands - there hands were always far to high to do anything but salute.
