A brilliant melodist & orchestrator was named "Il genio Bergamasco", after his birthplace. Verdi was profoundly inspired by this powerful "stretta" from' Lucia' (1835), that he used it, slightly changed, in the overture & finale of the 1st act of "Nabucco", 7 years later.
That’s Miss Beverly Sills on soprano and the great Patricia Kern nailing all those high As as Alisa. Under Schippers energetic leadership this is truly one of the best commercial Lucia di Lammermoor (complete) recordings available.

No, this is not the best version. The 1953 one with Serafin, Callas, Di Stefano and Gobbi is unsurpassed.
