    It also teaches the horse that whoa means whoa when tension is applied. How to remain calm if ropes get around the feet and teaches them to think, not panic.

      How do you know that the horse won’t break a leg? How do you know the horse won’t panic? You haven’t taught it not to panic so you can’t just expect it to stay calm when it is caught. Your logic is smart in some ways but not if not taught before hand. If one of those foals breaks a leg they are done for. Easy as that. 🤷‍♀️ We try and teach our lesson horses not to panic if in things but one of our most bomb proof horses, Ted, got his back leg caught in a fence, spoiler alert he broke it and unfortunately had to be shot. This isn’t a joke and you need to take it seriously, just because you think your right doesn’t mean that other people are wrong. Please take this into consideration and alter your training techniques. There is never a dull day when dealing with horses and you will never predict what will happen.

    Hi Amry, Just as a simple background on myself, I am 71 years old and I broke colts for 35 years for the public. Until I was 52 when I had a severe horse wreck that left me 100% disabled permanently ( 4 plc fracture of C1, internal decapitation, brain injury, spinal cord injury and more). No more horses for me. That was hard but I am okay and enjoy watching horse vids on YT, including your channel. Now, I want to give you a warning about something that I pray you will heed. Do NOT leave halters on any horses, but especially foals and weanlings, yearlings, etc. PLEASE! Especially with loose rope halters like you have done with your handsome babies. I admire you very much and see myself in you. I was always a hell-bent-for-leather cowgirl and I worked and trained in several disciplines including driving draft teams etc.
    Now, here was my sad experience. We were working on a horse ranch in northern Idaho where the foals were born out on the range. We brought in all the mares and separated and worked with ten foals, getting halters on them and just messing with them. The owner was an older man who'd worked with horses all his life and when he said to leave the halters on the babies overnight, I didn't like the idea but they were his colts and there wasn't much I could do about it. When we went out in the morning, we had 4 dead babies. They'd either been curious and put their noses through the fence, got the halter hung up on something and fought that until they died. OR they scratched their noses with their hind feet and got their little feet caught in the halters and were cast, and died during the night. There was a stallion prospect, reg. Appy, and he was ruined for life because he got a kinked neck from getting hung up and pulling back and fighting it, etc. 5 out of 10 were lost! It's not an unusual thing for this to happen because babies are curious and their feet are small. Another thing that can happen is another colt will play with the halter of another baby, get the rope hung up over their bottom teeth and they both get hurt from panic. So, just please heed this warning and never leave halters on any horses but especially babies. You are good enough roper to catch those kids when you need to. I didn't care much for roping young ones so I'd put the time in, I'd sort a baby off into a small pen and using patience and taking the time, I'd work with them until I had them caught. It's not that hard. I worked with a lot of big, raw-boned range-caught 5-year olds and doing that with them takes a lot more time but it's worth it. They really do learn that you aren't to be feared, etc.
    Again, I admire your riding ability and you are a great trainer. So I hope you'll listen to an old horse breaker who put in a lot of years in pens all over the west, and change this one thing in your routine.
    God bless you, hun!

      i agree 100%. that's why "parents" baby proof the house, STUFF happens, and it's almost always when there's no help around.1st thing i teach a youngin is to be, "call broke" 2nd thing, being "ground tied". Amry, good luck, and happy trails on your journey with Kixs and all those to come after.

    Those young horses will outgrow those tiny hernias. No need to worry. I like Kix. Nice looking well built colt with a pretty head. So many cow bred horses do not have pretty heads. Also liked the Palomino a lot. Well balanced, Lots of hip and hind leg, slim neck, soft eyes, pretty head. He will make a beautiful horse! My husband and I raised registered Paint Horses for over 30 years. I showed the weanlings and yearlings, halter and longe line. Won the Margarita Classic futurity in San Antonio twice and South Texas Pinto futurity many times. Fun days!

    KIXS is beautiful. I like his build much more than the two other colts. Having lived on a Farm in Ohio years ago where they bred ONLY race type Quarters, he just reminds me of the awesome foals they had there. In fact, KIXS looks very much like pictures of that farm's STUD when he was that age and he went on to be top winner at racing and I wish I could could remember his name. After he left the track, the owner retired him to the farm and the life of being the "playboy" and boy oh boy his colts were eye candy mixed with muscles. KIXS is just my cup of tea, and if I were not old, I would want to try and buy him for myself!

    At 6:44 re: the feet. Yes, people like to see that because of what they believe, but the color of the hoof makes NO difference to quality or hardness. That's a myth.
    Also I know you're gonna do what you do with those ropes no matter what people say here, but along with the dangers of damage, it's a sad impingement on their play.

    I don't know you Amry, but please take some advice from a former cowgirl.....Your back needs to be protected just as much when you are a teenager as when you are a full grown and developed adult. I used to be a "tom boy" and thought I could keep up with all the boys. I was always demonstrating how I could lift this or that, or pull this or that, but no one told me that what you do to your back when young will follow you into adulthood. So easy to damage your spine. So, if you want to be doing heavy duty chores that is great, but use TOOLS to help you, don't risk your precious spine. If you want to be able to ride well into your latter years, you will need a back that is in good health. Yes, you can do certain things to strengthen your arms and your abs, but still the spine has to work hard. Be wise Amry, and find other ways to haul stuff about the ranch, and ask for help whenever you need it. You are of light build, so please take that into consideration. I cringed when your threw a 50lb sack of feed up over your shoulder, that is bad enough but over one shoulder puts an UNBALANCED stress on all your body, not that I am saying you should have one 50lb sack on each shoulder, but to say that putting that amount of unbalanced weight is the kind of stuff that pulls your vertebral column into misalignment over time. That causes the spaces between vertebrae to herniate after years of misuse. That ends up with pinched nerves and that causes all kinds of havoc on our bodies. I damaged my lower back in my twenties trying to keep up with the guys and now that has caused me some real problems over the years, hundreds of Chiropractic visits, pain pills and down time. Now that I am a senior....it is really bad and my sciatic nerve often gets impinged and the pain is off the charts! TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK DEAR YOUNG LADY.....please.

      I also vote to leave rope-tangling experience to individual, and hyper-vigilant training sessions. All it takes is 2 seconds for 1 foal to spook one way and the rope to cause injury. Keep in mind that the most valuable foal is on loan, too, so one needs to take extra precautions.
      Sorry .. ha ha! This is what you get when we old-timers watch your great videos.
      My sister taught me something I've never forgotten, when I had our first baby: "Whenever you're tempted to do something risky, think of how the headline will read."
      May God continue to bless and guide you, Amry!

    I used to leave halters on my show cattle to teach them to lead. They learn quick that it doesn’t work to fight the rope. I’ve done the same thing with two Mustangs and a mule and they lead fine. I understand the risk but the benefits of having them teach themselves to lead far outweigh them. I think letting them learn young not to fight the pressure will be a worthwhile lesson if they ever get caught up in a wire fence…

    • @cnahorses
      @cnahorses  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! the BENEFITS out way the risks. Thank you for this comments. I have seen horses get caught up in wire and trash until there was nothing left... this will teach them to wait for help IF something does get them hung up.

    • @virginiabennett9156
      @virginiabennett9156 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen colts killed from leaving halters on and that is a risk no one should take. There are lots of other ways to teach a horse to not panic when hobbled or caught in wire, etc. You can see my above post about this to Amry. It's really common to see accidents occur with horses with halters left on for convenience sake. The least of which are rope burns if they're pulling lead ropes and on show horses, or horses for sale, it's not a good thing. I almost always trained and broke horses for the public and the last thing I'd want is to give them a horse back with a rope burn or two. But worse than that, it's too easy for a horse to get cast and cast horses mostly die. Put in the time and effort with your horses and teach them to be caught etc without any short cuts. Any old time horseman will tell you all of this and that's because us old folks have put in decades of working with horses and we've seen what can happen. I always used to listen to old timers, including my father and grandfather, they have a wealth of knowledge and helped me not to have these kinds of accidents that can be avoided. @@cnahorses

    I had to unfollow. Training horses is not for the untrained. Amy, you really need to get some professional training. Just because you can ride, doesn't make you a trainer. Good luck.

    Amy you have a good lookin’ colt in Kixxs 66 there. If I was much younger, turning 71 next month, I would be very very interested in him n I’d be wanting to purchase him sooner rather than later. Wish you the best with Kixxs 66. I’ll be watching. 👍🏻👱‍♀️💕💞💖💝

    Its better to start a horse and finish it in one go, bits and pieces don't add up, foundations are lost.

    I love Route 66 horses. I am looking forward to watching this . I loved training foals or weanling. Is the Dam side Two eyed Jack lines. Wimpy Two Eyes Jack would be a great halter horse then before 2 then cow horse once they are broke to ride. Have fun with the foals. They are a blast.❤

    I don’t agree with leaving a halter and lead rope on a horse. I’ve seen what happened to a mare that was scratching her ear and got her foot caught in her halter. She panicked and broke her neck.
