Carl is film cow, the mask is the new viewers, Paul is the old ones. When Paul moves out it means that the old viewers have seen it all before and are no longer impressed. When Paul dies it signifies those new viewers simply stop watching llamas with hats because at this point he's done all the bad stuff to do and they can't be horrified and find it funny anymore. The mask telling him to finish his work signifies the newer viewers begging for more, even though there is nothing left to create. Carl killing himself signified film cow saying no more llamas with hats because he didn't want the series remembered as funny at first then crappy. In episode 2 Carl said that forgiveness is the sound of drowning, screaming then silence. in episode 12 he committed suicide by jump of the bridge in to the water and drowned, he was screaming a then silence.
That actually makes a scary amount of sense. At least in a dark depressing and kind of fitting way. I have no idea if that's the cannon reason or not, but that's definitely my headcanon now.

I was petting a llama in a petting zoo several years ago and apperently one was angry, so it bit my hand. I screamed, 'F****** hell! I found Carl!' And the petting zoo person heard and was laughing and laughing

That last scene has always been really sad for me because in my eyes paul was kinda carls anchor to sanity sure carl was crazy before but Paul kept him steady acting as the angel on his shoulder to balance the demon but then Paul left carls only friend in the world and the Carl descended into madness from the last episode we see the Paul mask floating but then when he enters and sees Paul dead the mask is on his neck meaning everything was all in his head without Paul he went so crazy that he imagined another Paul who only told him to keep going so everything happened because Carl lost his only friend
Its been over a year since you posted but maybe this will help you understand what you watched. Llamas with hats is essentially a metaphor for viewer pressures on content creators to keep making things they know and like. Sequels to things intended to be one offs. If the creator caves then the sequels become progressively more distant from the original work and a more distorted intepretation of that original vision. Until the act of creation itself becomes torture. Your work is not finished Carl. You must complete your work.

Oh yeah. I didn't notice it the first time I washed because it was a gradual change. But when it all snaps back into the original soundtrack right at the end, that's where it kind of hits you that it changed in the first place. Or at least, that was my experience. It's an interesting audio cue to show how everything is breaking down. I liked the effect.

I first saw this animation a long while ago, I only watched the first five eps, now that I've watched the rest I can't even explain how I feel about it...
In the end, Paul was really the bad guy. None of that would have happened unless Paul had stayed by Carl’s side. All Carl wanted was a friend, and his only friend left him. A real friend would have accepted Carl for who he was.

You might be interested to know that FilmCow released an epilogue to this series fairly recently! It's about as long as the rest of the series combined, and just as surreal. Surprisingly deep, though.

I've listened to the full thing as a podcast about 4 or 5 hundred times. Watched the full series from ep 1-12 originally and the full series 100+ times since.
The ending is a reference to the boat one were he says that’s the sound of forgiveness screaming and then silence. At the end hes pretending that Paul’s screaming then he stops and jumps in the water. It represents Paul forgiving him
I’m not sure about this but it occurred to me a while back that Carl could be suffering from either Dissociative Personality Disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder, and Paul is a fragment of his true self trying to reason with the sociopathic Carl. This seems particularly apt later in the series when Carl starts talking to the Paul mask, which slowly becomes less judgmental but more urgent in its pleas to Carl to fix his issues. This of course is just a personal theory and I’m sure the creators had other ideas in mind to explain what was happening during the shorts.

My friend showed me episode three soon as it came out. I accurately guessed every single of Carl's lines. From that day on I was nicknamed Carl.
