During the pandemic I started experimenting with soak+dye and fold paint on used and discarded textiles (bed linens and tablecloths from the local hotels and restaurants that kept closing down) and it was a revelatory experience! I had no knowledge of Sam Gilliam until the algorithms suggested textile artists and I was speechless when I saw that Gilliam made these out-of-the-frame canvases in 1972 (when I was born!) and to think that I was playing with this technique 50 years later! What a ground breaking artist he was, and very unknown outside certain circles! He needs to be more celebrated. Thank you for the video.
