    It never fails; you have to go to the dungeon just to get an owlbear feather, and the wife adds a dozen more things to your list to pick up.

      And when he got home he not only didn't get those things, he turned into a bat as well.

    I cheered when the Umber Hulk showed up to battle the Owlbear. That was a classic Harryhausen moment! Wonderful stuff!

      We thought we couldn't make a D & D monster film without having two of them fight each other, Harryhausen-style :)

    Great job! I love how the whole thing has the feel of the original AD&D before it got overly flashy and glossy. There's a real sense of the late 70s/early 80s in the design and monsters. Made me feel like I was 12 again back in 81.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! That's sort of why I did this film. I feel that the Photoshop "oil panted" illustrations of the modern D & D publications are too slick and not personal enough. I like the rough edges of the original bunch of modules.

    This makes me wish that Harryhausen was able to do a movie with classic AD&D monsters in his stop-motion style. It would have been wonderful.

    I actually shouted aloud when the beasts fought! So amazing! AND A RUST MONSTER!!!!! I remember that from an assorted mini plastic monster kit all the way back in the 70's. Thanks for this. Can't get enough.

  • @tabcat

    This makes my inner thirteen-year-old very happy.
    I used to have a huge box of toy monsters when I was a child. I had no name for a lot of them were until I bought the Monster Manual. It was then that I learned that I owned a rust monster, two bulettes, an umber hulk, and later when I bought the Fiend Folio, I learned that I had a grell.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's my situation too! I had a bunch of cheap-looking small plastic monsters, and only lately realized that they're a line-up of classic D & D critters.

    • @tabcat
      @tabcat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Letting my mom throw them out when I got older is one of my biggest regrets. But I still have my 1st edition Monster Manual.

    • @Mordante69
      @Mordante69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had these too. They actually predate D&D as I can remember having them around 74 or 75. I did some research and found this awesome article.
      "Little known Sci-Fi facts: How A Cheap Bag of Toys inspired D&D Monsters". Cut and paste into your search engine and it should come up. I couldn't post a link for some reason.

    Guys, this was wonderful. I'm a huge fan of owlbears, so you had me from the beginning. But I really loved your celebration of the old monster designs, by people like Dave Sutherland, Tom Wham, and others. I'm producing a documentary right now called "Eye of the Beholder: The Art of D&D," and this really captured everything that inspired me to make our movie in the first place. Well done!

      @TheLoneAnimator  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WVNUK The most expensive material I use is dental plaster for my molds. It's very hard and lasts forever, through endless castings. Hobby plaster is softer but can be used for molds where the need for delicate details isn't as important. It's also cheaper than dental plaster. If you look in my list of videos on my TH-cam page you'll find a few videos that detail how I make my puppets.

      Believe it or not, I think the owlbear had roamed abroad in popular fiction before D&D, as I'm fairly sure I saw one in a reprint of a Buck Rogers newspaper strip. Also, did you ever collect the rubber jigglers/uglies? They were a massive part of my childhood, and it turns out one set was taken from original designs by Basil Wolverton.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't seen the owlbear outside of D&D, but it's quite possible since in the early days Gygax and co lifted monsters from all over the place. I didn't collect jigglers/uglies as a thing, since I wasn't aware of the concept. I just bought cool rubber monsters when I found them. Didn't know about the Wolverton connection! A while ago Basil Wolverton's son and family gave me the blessing to adapt some of his dad's scifi comics into TH-cam videos, so hopefully I can get on with that this year.

    I'm seeing what looks like motion blur. Is this go-motion?

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, the motion blur is applied using tools in After Effects.

    the animation is so smooth like there were people in suits instead of puppets,did you use motion blur?

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm using a home-made motion blur in After Effects.

    • @bubasvaba3583
      @bubasvaba3583 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      how do you time movement when animating,do you know the number of frames to take in advance or do you take a bunch of them and then edit it later?

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I animate with 25 frames per second, so I usually keep a check on how many frames I do for each movement, like a footstep, the turn of a head, and so on. But I actually have an old analogue stop watch that belonged to my dad. For some movements I perform the motion myself and time it. That way I know exactly how many frames is needed. But sometimes I just go with the flow, and try to feel my way through the animation. For example, the fight between the owlbear and the umber hulk in this video wasn't timed at all, I just winged it and went with what felt right, which seems to be how Ray Harryhausen preferred to work.

      thank you for the reply,how reliable is wire armature,does it snap often?

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I've used aluminum wires for many years now, and they haven't snapped even once (touch wood). I bundle a number of wires together, so should a few snap, then the puppet will still hold its position during animation.
