I grow sunflowers for their roots in an effort to make soil out of clay and heavy soil. I've harvested the seeds and leave the stalks standing to support crops like pole beans. The strategy is to keep some kind of cover crop or veggie in the soil making roots all the time, in an overlapping way. The old roots form a path for new rooting plants.

Quite comprehensive coverage of how to grow sunflowers, the only thing that you missed was how to recover a chopped sunflower from the neighbours garden :-)
+OldGardenerGuy Fortunately it didn't go all the way into her yard. She's a very sweet lady. We swap seeds and plants. Thanks for watching my sunflower growing, I try every year for a huge one, this year they went crazy, due to the compost I guess. Take care, Kim
Stunning flowers. I was turned on to Sunflowers when I had chickens, I would toss seeds to them and they grew. It brought Goldfinches to my yard for the first time. I love watching them eat the seeds. I already bought the Mammoth seeds to plant in my new house. I used to plant them. They are just amazing. Thanks so much for this video...
Thank you for the info on Mammoth sunflowers. I like how you filmed it in clips over the entire growing season. We are trying Mammoths for the first time and planted them today. I hope they turn out like yours.
I grow these yearly in the easement or parkway. I enjoy all the foot traffic and conversations that come with it. This year I had about 20 plants I couldn’t use so I set them out front with a sign for free. Made a lot of people happy fairly cheaply 😎👍
great video! thank you. my mammoths are in my second year and i now have hundreds all over my apt. complex. the birds and bees and butterflies and cardinals love them - as do my neighbors.
I just grew giant sunflowers, 12 ft tall!! I have learned a lot. Funny I just came upon this video now. I fed a lot to my hens for the protein during molting season and harvested some for myself. I had one that bloomed sunflowers along the stock as well! Every one of them produced seeds!! They were beautiful. We had to use an axe to cut ours down! I leave the roots in to decompose.
I took a huge sigh of relief after watching this video, I planted all my mammoth seeds about 3 days ago, 3-4 inches deep but when I read the packet after the fact it said 1" was the recommended depth, hope germination still happens and they pop out soon
I made the mistake of following the package at 1", one of my tallest at over 10 feet just started tipping over while I was changing supports for the plants.
Such a lovely hat. You look Gorgeous. Just started to grow Mongolian giant sunflowers in my London garden. Planted the seeds a week or so ago. And they've sprouted. I'm overjoyed. Going to grow with papaver somniferum poppies. Think they'll look great together. Thank you for your video. It's great

+The Abled Gardener I've just planted several sunflowers in newly cultivated (I say cultivated but really just tilled and derooted/rocked) soil and a few seem to be falling over after only 1- 2 days. I did start them off in a peat moss little starter set for a couple days as I wasn't quite finished with the layout. Does it just not give the support needed? I'll assume that I can bury the stem a bit to give support as you suggested. Half the land I tilled seemed to be a bit clay heavy where the sunflowers ended up =/, was wondering if that was a death sentence... Edit : Got the "Russian Mammoth" sunflowers I believe they were called if specifics are needed
Mine that were transplanted took a dive also. I did prop them up with wood chips and mulch, it wasn't too long before they rooted and took hold (1-2 weeks) they look fine now, are growing and the stem is thicker. I have taken the wood chips and mulch away form the stem and they are fine on their own. Good luck with your Russian Mammoths and I hope you post some pics on the Abled Gardener FB page.
Hi, great video. I live in Tennessee, this year my mammoth sunflowers were huge, out of 25, I had 15 that reached 16' tall ,and between 12"-16 " across. They were all above 10'. I'll have a lot of seeds for next year, plus we use them in our feeders. All the best, Sonny T

Seems like sunflowers are large weeds that seem to bind soil together as a compactor and large leaves that make for mulch, while the stalk seems to be something like a type of bamboo. I wonder what the uses of those thick stalks could be for that “crunch”-fibre 🤔🧐
I planted my mammoth sunflower seeds 1/2 an inch deep like the seed packet said and they sprouted with ease and they're now at least a foot tall it's only been a week or two

She has great toned arms!
Nice Zinnias.
Wow she loves sunflower 🌻
Seems like sunflowers are large weeds that seem to bind soil together as a compactor and large leaves that make for mulch, while the stalk seems to be something like a type of bamboo. I wonder what the uses of those thick stalks could be for that “crunch”-fibre 🤔🧐
I planted my mammoth sunflower seeds 1/2 an inch deep like the seed packet said and they sprouted with ease and they're now at least a foot tall it's only been a week or two
