It's great that we have this footage. I can't believe an IndyCar driver or any driver for that matter would pull such an immature stunt like that, let alone on the biggest stage in American Open Wheel Racing. That's a mistake one makes in their first year of racing. Moves like this make drivers un-signable, both for teams and for sponsors.
TheTMoney35 Yeah well not like Mansell never did anything as silly as this in his career : going reverse in the pits or losing a race because you prematurely wave to the crowd are not exactly signs of greatness lol.
Vitolo should never have been allowed to compete in another Indy event after this. That is a lifetime ban, as he showed just how horrible a driver he really was. The fact that Indy let him back into the 1997 Indy was unforgivable.
A terrible race for Nigel. It was bad enough dealing with the dominance of Mercedes but then he gets penalized by stupid USAC. Despite this, he drives like a demon to move from 7th to 3rd and then Vitolo smashes into him. After that happened I was about ready to pack up and leave because I knew there was nobody else who had a prayer against those Mercedes. About the only other driver who had a shot was Eddie Cheever and guess what? USAC penalized him as well and took him out of contention.
Yeah his lola wasn't like what he drove the year he became champion. It's a pity. If not for all that, he'd likely stick around in Indycar longer (Him and Michael Andretti might have made a good team). Both team owners liked him.
I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent driving of Villeneuve that day. I was there and became a Villeneuve fan on the spot. The Pushrod V-8 was not going to be denied. The crowd cheered when Fittipaldi crashed.. angry he'd not drunk milk in victory lane the year before. Otherwise it may have been Penske/Pushrod at #1 and #2.
This wasn't the only factor that ruined Mansell's time in Indycar. The lola was subpar in comparison to the year before. If not for that, Mansell may have become teammates with Michael Andretti and retired some years later. Might've been a better ending in comparison to f1
Idk. Mansell had worn out his welcome by then. Mario said he was a terrible teammate. I think he was fed up with the speed on the ovals. The chassis was garbage even though he took a few pole's.
@@ohiopower the fact that the chassis was garbage pretty much justifies my point and pretty much disillusioned him. Wouldn't blame him for that. Him and Mario just didn't get along for some reason.
I wonder if he had won the title in 86 or didn't get hurt in 87 fighting for the title. If maybe he would have came to Indycar earlier. Especially after Prost kinda dicked him over while they were both at Ferrari in 90.
Nigel Mansell- An unhappy Englishman LOL C'mon man, he's got more talent than brains. But when it comes to talent, he's got more in his piss than Vitolo could ever hope to acquire in 1,000 lifetimes.
If Vitolo hadn't clipped that rear car, the direction he was heading means he would have hit Mansell right in the rear at maybe 120mph - and put Mansell out for the season. Fishy?
1:21 - WWF Finish Move
I saw Dennis Vitolo finish a race once.

That's what happens when drivers are allowed to buy their rides.
@SUPREME MEGATRON Hamilton didn't expect red light on exit of pit stop. I never expect that as well.

I wouldn’t trust Vitolo with a lawnmower!
DV raced again in 1997, but started/finished well behind the run.
Vitlolo is the type of guy to accidentally knock down groceries with his shopping cart.
"The Zapruder footage" lmao
Must have been paid by Piquet... 🤣
1:17 I was convinced, up until now, that Mansell leaped out of that car for a small Methanol fire, now his head hurt because of a tyre?
“What a jerk we had out there. Under yellow for a lap and a half and then someone tries to take my head off?” Nigel reported to Dr Jerry Punch
He said joke, not jerk.

I could see it at the start of the yellow, but that was what, 2 - 3 mins after it came out?
Nigel Mansell
*An Unhappy Englishman*
LOL what a occupation

@@ohiopower Hard to say really about that one
Mansell was fine when everything was going his way, but crumbled when it wasn’t.
Vitolo was a pay driver who shouldn't have been in the race
It does look like a very amateurish moment, to do that under yellow..
But as he owes up to the mistake and then that's it
I hope this don’t happen to Alonso.
Alonso back to F1
Alonso DNQ
