In the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh, in the Kullu district, lies a village called Jia, where rivers Parvati and Beas meet, and it is also where farmer Ajay Mahant is successfully cultivating apples by blending tradition with modern techniques such as High density farming and Micro irrigation.

Ajay reminisces about how farming was prosperous during his grandfather's time, but with changing times, everything altered. Climate change has not only impacted plains but also mountainous regions. Chilling requirements are the primary need for apples, and as the weather changed, it also affected this, leading to a decline in apple production. However, Ajay found a solution to this challenge. He carefully selected plant varieties and changed his farming methods. Apart from apples, Ajay also cultivates peaches and pears.
Today, Ajay is growing more than twenty varieties of apples, peaches, and pears, but it wasn't an easy start. Ajay’s father, Vinod Mahant, recalls how they had to leave the village due to adverse conditions but eventually managed to restart everything.
Engaged in high-density farming and cultivating the most advanced varieties of apple, peach, and pear plants, Ajay, when asked about his turnover, says that with honesty in work, there is no chance of incurring losses.
The 'तकनीक से तरक्की सीरीज' series by News Potli and Jain Irrigation is an awareness campaign showcasing stories of farmers who are earning profits by experimenting and using new technology in farming. Their farming methods are different from others, and adopting them can turn loss-making, labor-intensive farming into profitable ventures.
