Super clear. Pro advice. The suggestion on the extra wedges and boards is solid too thx. ‘Bout to tackle my check valve and it feels darn near welded onto the tank! 😂
    Edit/update:
After removing the heater core, draining the tank several times, removing the check valve core, reinstalling the check valve…. Etc etc etc….
Turns out, the liner of the city-water hose has eroded away somehow and has become clogged. Time to replace a very long stretch of hose. Fingers crossed, this is the final fix! Might have to figure out a backup plan if this doesn’t resolve the problem though. 🤪
I thought it was a clog in the camper lines or the check valve, but never thought to check the water pressure on the main-line…. Good at the tap, terrible at the end of the hose…
Edit edit: Hose replaced. Problem persists. Literally mid-shower and the hot water abruptly shut off to a trickle. 🥶 Cold water supply runs fine. I’m stumped for the moment…
Okay. Okay. I just rewatched the video and my spring is totally missing now too…. I’ll go buy a new check valve today. Ugh…. At least I have all brand-new drinking water-safe hose!

Excellent video! I have a Winnebago Journey 34Y in a campground with no hot water pressure. Per your video I'm sure the check valve is the culprit. I'm waiting until we're home in 10 days to tackle replacement. I'm hoping to get all needed access through a panel in our bedroom closet (where the water heater bypass valve is). Thanks for the excellent video!

Kevin, Status update: it's fixed! When we got home I got the old check valve out. (Very difficult. Had to buy a 1" socket and a 20" drive extension for access with any leverage AND I used a 3' length of pipe over the wrench handle. With practically all my body weight on all that, the check valve finally broke loose with a very loud crack. I was relieved that I had not broken it off in the water heater.) The condition of my old check valve was just like yours. I even found the loose spring in the water heater as you did. I bought the same replacement you did. I installed it today and now have hot water pressure (and no longer have the groaning, whining noise from the water heater that had become increasingly louder)! I'm sort of proud of this DIY project and especially pleased with the $$ savings -- with my local go-to RV repair facility's labor at $130 per hour. Once again, I thank you for your excellent invaluable video. -- Stan

im trying to think how the check valve prevents anti freeze from filling the water heater ? i dont get it. the check valve seems to be where hot water come out of the tank to the rv. i just took out my broke check valve as it was broke and all the sudden i stopped havi g hot water coming out so i removed it and now its back in action. now only thing is a problem iv had since getvthe rv. very very low water pressure hot and cold at the bathroom sink only. i dont get what it could be except it is the highest spot for water to come out in the trailer but doesnt seem that would be it. everywhere else there is decent pressure great video

Hi Kevin, Great video since I had the same problem on my Itasca 35G. Took off the access panel on the back of the cabinet and valves were right there, but still a little difficult to get to. Took the hot water side check valve off - had to use an open end wrench since no room for a socket on mine. Sure enough the poppet was loose and the spring and retainer were gone. From what your video showed, I got a mirror and looked down into the hole in the tank and I could see the spring and the retainer down in there. It was a bit deeper in there than yours and I tried to use a wire to retrieve them, but didn't have any luck. Then I thought about using my Shop Vac to see if I could suck them out. Made sure the drain plug was out and the relief valve was open so air could get into the tank, applied the shop vac and instant success! Glad I watched the video or I might not have looked down in there for the spring and retainer. I suspect they might have still produced a restriction in the line after replacing the check valve. Thank You!

@@ktoutdoor thank you for replying. Been so busy trying to get things done before the next snow that we figured it out during prepping. We had a frozen pipe. Not sure where but we believe it’s between the water heater and the first bathroom. Whenever the pipe freezes it shuts off the hot water through the whole RV and all the water to the half bathroom.

I make a habit of putting 25 quarts of vinegar and 25 quarts of fresh water once a year and run it through the water system, leaving it sit in the lines for a couple of days. Really cleans the piping, valves and tapes, and helps with the grey/black tanks get clear. Yes, everything fizzes like crazy.
