    It shouldn't have taken until 2022 to induct Ray Charles into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music was Ray Charles highest selling album of all time. Following it's unbelievable success, Ray kept putting out great country songs throughout the decades. Ray LOVED country music and wasn't ashamed to tell you so despite the pushback he got from his peers at the time. Ray teamed up with Willie Nelson and recorded "Seven Spanish Angels", he released "Crazy Old Soldier" with Johnny Cash, "We Didn't See a Thing" with George Jones- the list goes on and on. Ray Charles had one of the most iconic voices of all time and in my opinion he should have been inducted into the CMHOF a LONG time ago- preferably while he was still living. It is shameful if you were to ask me! Ray Charles was so unimaginably good that a thousand years after we are all dead and gone people will STILL know who Ray Charles was!

    His country album was one of the best albums, ever. He sang country, I just don’t remember him being played on country radio. Ray could sing just about anything and sing it like he owned it.
    The writer of this song, Don Gibson, had a huge hit with it.
    Another hit for Ray, You Don't Know Me, was written by country singer Eddie Arnold and very prolific writer, Cindy Walker.

    Jeez what a voice. The man was a freakin legend. If you haven’t already, check out “Seven Spanish Angels.” It’s a duet he does with Willie Nelson. Also check out “A Song For You.” There’s a live version he does with Willie that’ll put you in tears. Just look at Willie’s face. You can see the emotion. This man was blind, but he could see everything. If there was something outta tune-he would know.
    By the way, I agree with Billy Joel, I love Ray Charles more than Elvis.

    This whole album is like this, dude. I keep mentioning that R&B and country are so very close together in lyrics, structure and even beat in some cases. Ray Charles's influence had a lot to do with the way both evolved subsequent to his album. It's just a theory of my own, but I'm pretty convinced of it. The history of this song -- Don Gibson wrote it and had a hit with it in 1958, but it was really only known by country fans. Ray got hold of it and made it known to the world. Hats off to both these gentlemen for bridging gaps few if any had bothered with during that time frame. Just to add another quick note - I wouldn't be surprised if Ray Price didn't take some hints from this in his switch-over from country to more of a crooner role.

      @@DjPjrocReacts911 Between Ray Price and Gladys Knight, I'd have to look up which one did You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me first. Same is true with Bob Luman and again Gladys Knight on Neither One Of us, and in the early '90s, John Michael Montgomery and All 4 One had a common hit in I Swear, which if memory serves charted concurrently on the country and R&B charts.

    • @dennisking7872

      @@danwilliams762 In the early 1990s there was an album called "Rhythm, Country & Blues" which featured collaborations between country music and R&B stars performing country and R&B songs. For example, Clint Black and the Pointer Sisters recorded "Chain of Fools" and Aaron Neville and Trisha Yearwood recorded "I Fall to Pieces." Ray Charles was clearly foreshadowing this connection by recording country music in his own unique style more than 30 years earlier. True genius!

    Written, as you showed in your intro, by the legendary Don Williams, but.... and this is a big but.... you don't REALLY get the message until you hear it from Ray. That's the thing about Ray. If he covers a song, that's it. It's done. He owns it at that point. ••• Fun memory: When I was in high school back in the mid-60s, one of the giant hits of the day was Ray Charles' "What'd I Say? with that great call-and-response section at the end. Friday and Saturday nights were "cruisin'" nights and we'd spend hours cruisin' back and forth between Dick's Drive-In and the Burger King. If "What'd I Say" came on the radio while we were parked in either parking lot of those two burger joints you can bet the windows rolled down on EVERYBODY'S car and the radio volumes went up full blast! And when it came to the call-and-response part of the song, EVERYBODY let loose and joined in! We rocked those joints! Those were the days!!!

  • @Looneyintheboonies

    My grandparents had the album this song was on, and i grew up listening to Ray Charles in the Appalachian mountains! We are/were a family of bluegrass musicians, but i credit my family for listening to a broad range of musical artists and giving me that music history. My aunts used to sing this song! By the way sir, I just watched your video of Ralph Stanley and Patti Loveless, and i enjoyed it! Ralph is from not too far down the road from where i live, and he and his band "The Clinch Mountain Boys" are/were legends around here! You said you liked the bluegrass! Well, the father of bluegrass music is Bill Monroe, and one of Bill's two big influences was an African American man, who was the son of a slave, and his name was Arnold Schultz. So, there's a good reason why the music affects you! Here's a link to read about Arnold Schulz:

    • @Looneyintheboonies

      @@DjPjrocReacts911 Well, Arnold Schultz didnt just inspire the birth of bluegrass, along with Bill Monroe's "Uncle Pen" that he made famous in a song (those are the 2 influences he sites), but Mr. Schultz invented "thumb picking" as opposed to just strumming the instrument. This whole thing fascinates me. Everyone in my family only ever used "thumb picks" and i still do. Grandpa brought that with him from Kentucky, but it had to have come directly from Arnold Schultz. And i always saw bluegrass as the mountain man's blues. The lyrics are similar, they sing about how things are hard, or they tell a story about an event. Too many tell tales of murder and mayhem! But the banjo, which is prevalent in bluegrass, originated in Africa. I've talked too much, but i will have to tell you about the Melungeon people of Appalachia, otherwise known as "The mystery people of Appalachia." They are still testing our DNA to figure out how we got there, where we came from, etc. Melungeons are a mixed race and like myself, there are alot of people in Appalachia with Melungeon blood. My Grandpa's mom was pure Melungeon, which isn't pure at all, they have some African features and are very dark complected, like Australian Aboriginal people with the light eyes and curly hair. They have been in America longer than most white settlers. The old folks called themselves "Black Dutch", which is how my grandparents referred to them/us. Elvis Presley, through his mother Gladys as well as Abraham Lincoln were of Melungeon ancestry. So, it makes sense to me that even though theres a distinct difference in blues and bluegrass, there's a reason why it hits us the same! I'll shut up now. 🤔🤭😁

      Do't you dare shut up. This is great stuff! I've never heard of Melungeon at all. You talk about fascinating . I'm googlig now. I am so glad you are here, we all are. Please feel free to talk as mch as you want, we are a learnig and teachig community here. PEACE

    • @Looneyintheboonies
      @Looneyintheboonies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DjPjrocReacts911 Well, ok then. Some have speculated that the Melungeon people had Portuguese ancestry. But i don't think that's the theory anymore. The predominant theory was a tri-racial mix of European, Native American and Sub-saharan African DNA in no particular order. But there's overwhelming DNA evidence that the Melungeons are a definitely a unique racial mixture of their own. And I was told when i was young that our creed or motto is "Doomed" lol.. I said yep, that explains it! 😁😳 Can you imagine being a people that doesnt even remember or know who they are or from where they came? They have been on the continent for so long that nobody knows. And what's so maddening to me, is how we are portrayed in popular culture. Mountain people, that is. Most of the descriptions I've seen are the polar opposite of what is accurate. They are very sweet, somewhat innocent people in some ways, and very self-sufficient with many survival skills. However, portions of Appalachia have the shortest lifespans in the entire country due to different things, it was mostly the coal mines, i think, but now the entire stretch of Appalachia has been decimated by the opiod crisis. I don't know ANYONE that hasn't lost at least one family member, I've lost 2 nieces. You should see the mini-series they made about that called "Dopesick" on Hulu starring Michael Keaton. The author of the book is from right here where i live. You know, most people don't know a thing about us, and aren't interested, lol. I'm quite sure we are in Hillary's "basket of deplorables" from Obama's "Flyover, USA." 🤭😁

    Ray Charles did have a great voice Pj and made anything he sang his. Another artist I'm sure you'll admire is Don Gibson. Don wrote this song and many others. I'll suggest one song he didn't write but sang. You need to listen to "Sea of Heartbreak"! This lonely man will convince you with his voice that he felt the lyrics in much the way Hank Williams could. His own songs he wrote were all about pains of the soul. John Cash thought Sea of Heartbreak, as sung by Don Gibson belonged on everyone's music shelve's. Cash knew a little about music in most opinions. Give the song a shot even if only for personal reasons. A reaction by you would also be highly desirable Dj Pj!
