      Crazy finish? Thats a weird way of spelling 'both "pros" taking a complete shit" on the biggest stage. There have been more missed single pin spares in the televised 2022 season then ive see total since I started watching pro bowling in 1977. This is why people say bowling sucks now. And when you see all this gagging, what can you say? Hard to argue

    That "hook rating" has to be one of the most useless stats shown on the PBA telecast. A ball rated 10 on that scale could hook less than a ball rated 4, depending on conditions. It also completely masks the reason why bowlers choose the balls they do, and why they might switch mid-match. The fact that they never go into any detail of how different balls create different shapes is exactly why there is such a gap between people "in the know" and people that aren't. Think about any major sport, and how many complex details of rules, strategy, etc they talk about on tv. Trust me when I say there's a market for this kind of info. You'd get so many more people interested in bowling if they realized just how much there is to it.
    I mean, they even go over what the patterns are, but for most bowlers that is nearly meaningless because they'll never see that kind of pattern in league or casual play. You could make the pattern discussion as simple as "remember that sport patterns are significantly harder that your typical house shot" and then describe some basic characteristics, like how flat it is, how long it is, and then point out when a bowler makes a big move and describe why that might be. For ball choice, it's so much more complicated because of how much the dynamics of the ball matter. Sometimes Randy will explain the basic difference between urethane and reactive, but usually in only very basic terms.
    I get that the average viewer might not really understand what's being said, but that's how it is for any other sport. The only difference is that other sports are much more in the mind of the average sports viewer, so they're more likely to know what's being said. We can get bowling to that place too, if we show our excitement for the fantastic complexities of throwing a good shot in bowling. The only way you get the uninitiated into a sport is to both show and explain why you find it fun. Make the viewer want to learn more by giving them some teasers of the kinds of things the pros think about. Putting a simple "hook rating" on screen certainly simplifies the explanation, but it also stops the discussion short by making people think it's that simple to understand.
    As much as I like watching bowling with Randy as the analyst, I think we need to see bowlers that have experienced the modern game firsthand do the occasional telecast as the analyst. Randy is certainly knowledgeable about the game, but I think we need a fresh perspective on primetime. Most of the major sports have countless analysts, with a few big ones that stick out for their absolutely awesome knowledge of the sport (think John Madden, R.I.P.), but none of the major sports (as far as I know) have literally a single analyst that does every show. Love ya, Randy, but we need some fresh blood in the booth.

      An example I would ask as a 200+ average 2 league house bowler is why are they using urethane on a 40 ft. pattern. I understand the use on 32 to even 36 ft but would appreciate some detail. My Pitch Black sits in my bag waiting for its turn.

    • @drakedbz
      @drakedbz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bamm139 Generally, if the pattern is feeling flat, urethane can carry down oil to fix that for later in the set. It's also useful if the lanes are dry because it doesn't respond as quickly to the friction as a resin ball would.
      Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I'm certainly no expert.

    Man Prather got the worst luck there

    • @drakedbz
      @drakedbz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prather's a great player, but you can't really blame that loss on luck. He had to figure out lanes that were already broken down, which is hard enough to do if you've been on those lanes through the whole process. As they mentioned, the 1 seed is a tough spot to bowl from because of lane conditions. Had he found a spot to bowl from that wasn't so prone to leaving single pin spares, he probably would have won this match. That can be really tough to do in the few practice shots you get.
