Found a Stihl hs80 at the dump and took it for free, it was in pretty good shape except for the grommet at the bottom of the tank that needed to be replaced since it leaked fuel. Was trying to clean/sharpen the blades and check out the gearbox while I was at it. Got it running after cleaning everything and getting it ready to be used again but the blades wouldn’t move and didn’t even think to check if I over tightened the blades bolts closest to the gearbox and lo and behold, it’s running now that I loosened them. Thx for the vid, helped me troubleshoot my error!
The spacers are called sleeves in the parts list. They come in several different lengths (in mm) to allow for wear between the blades. Ideally those sleeves at the base allow for tightening the screws securely while still allowing the blades to slide freely. Plan b I leave them loose enough not to bind the blades. They can only back out so far as the cover will prevent them from coming out but the bar will be a little wobbly. To fix it correctly you will need to make sure that the steel shim that runs the length of the bar is intact then put calipers across the assembly and order the size sleeves that stand just proud so the screws can be tightened without binding. The ones out along the blades aren't as critical as they can be left short of tight since the nuts stay put wherever they are left.
I bought a Stihl HS45 hedge trimmer at the begin of this month. To me personally, there was always a very loud more rattling noise from the start. I used it 5x for quite few hours, it worked perfectly fine. Now my blades won't move at all. The rattling is still there, when I rev it the blades don't move either. What could be wrong here?
If this hedger is brand new i would take it back in cause it would still be under warranty. If not then you'll have to take off the back plate and take a look, and go from there. The connecting rods have cylinder type bearings that will start slipping out if the grease gets low. Those can jam it and keep it from moving.
my blades are moving and faster when i trigger for higher revs; i sharpened the blades and greased ghe bar and 2 blades but when i go to trim light vegetation , the blades slow down and ther is no cutting; could the clutch not be "engaging"?? how do i check this in the clutch??... thanks in advance
Are the blades slowing down when you're cutting or when you're about to start cutting? If it's slowing down when you go to cut then I would be looking at the carburetor. If it's happening when you're cutting then I would check the clutch and make sure the separate pieces of the clutch are moving freely. Sometimes rust/dirt can get in there and keep those pieces from moving freely.
I did not find those specs so I do not know, I have found other Stihl equipment to be in the 5 to 10 lb range for bolts similar to this in other models
use a lanolin based spray on the blades lanolin or lanotec as we know it in aus is made from sheeps oil from the wool and is safe for the machine and plants best and safest product if u can access it
@@Zerep1 The only thing that will happen if you over tighten the screws is that you will strip the threads. as long as the spacers are there no matter how tight the screws are the blades should move freely. From experience

Those screws are supposed to be tight. you must have lost the spacers that go under the screws.
It is possible, I am working with what was there, but I believe the end result would be the same if those screws are overtightened

@@jacolo9482 appreciate the info, thank you
My trimmer engage then stop start back and stop (blades )
Sorry, there isn't enough operation detail, what's the model? What have you checked?
My solution, spray WD40. Have a cup of tea. If somehow that hasnt fixed it then take it to my father.
Nice, I love it 😀
