Smelly Album Covers? Smelly Books? How To Remove Odor Quickly

  • If you have smelly album covers or smelly books, I have the solution for you.
    You’ll need an ozone generator, a storage tote, and a drill. No need to waste your time with baking soda. It just doesn’t work for album covers or books with a heavy odor especially mildew. This method is quick and effective.
    The rubber grommet used here has the following dimensions:
    Inside hole diameter = ½”
    Total grommet diameter (o.d.) = 39/64”
    Hole diameter to drill (i.d.) = 0.419”
    I used a 7/16” drill bit.
    It’s hard to find the grommet in small quantities, so I purchased this set amzn.to/3vyGIV4
    Ozone Generator - amzn.to/2U7OQ1T
    Foam weather stripping (optional) - amzn.to/3zyMVUb

    I recently purchased a large room sized ozone generator but haven’t used it yet. Do you think this would work if I put the books / albums in the same room that I will treat with the generator?

    Could a higher volume generator be used to blow into a plenum from which a manifold of PVC pipes feed several larger containers at one time? I would do it outside so the ozone can vent into the atmosphere. The idea of doing 20 albums at a time would take a lot of time, even for a modest collection. Wouldn't a higher concentration be faster and more effective, as long as it it done safely?

    Thank you! I just ordered the ozone generator (used your link in the comments). The grommets were a bit expensive though. Do you think I could duct tape this into the hole? Would it keep the ozone in?

    • @ToolboxDIY
      @ToolboxDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Duct tape should work just fine. There's always a little bit of leakage with the grommets so duct tape may have even less.

    Would this be safe with electronics? I have an iPad Magic Keyboard that just smells aweful and none of the usual recommendations are making a difference. It’s the felt parts that just hold on to every horrible odour. Also the back of the iPad smells rank. Not sure exposing an iPad to oxone is a good idea? Advice?

    Very Interesting video, I've been using simple green spray and wiping off my album sleeves and other peoples "funk". Since I purchase second hand albums I have found many that smell like cigarette smoke or mildew. Pretty gross and disgusting. I wonder if the ozone will kill mildew spores. Anyway I think I will give this a shot. Also, I'm thinking that if I do this in the garage and simply open the garage door I shouldn't have to wait the full 2 hours? Thanks

    • @williamearle6281
      @williamearle6281 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How did it work out? I have the same concern about mildew spores and their order just coming back to old books soon after removing the order. That's been the issue I've had with baking soda. Coffee grounds and bamboo is usually the odor eventually comes back. The bamboo and other moisture absorbing packets seem to be working better than the baking soda, but still doesn't seem like a permanent fix.

    I hate the smell of ozone but I might try this for VHS covers. I don't buy old records that smell because they're usually in bad condition otherwise as well, and I like my records to be in good condition.

    What about good old-fashioned airing out? like taking them spreading them out letting them get some fresh air or like a fan? I just inherited a few thousand and my basement now smells gross so I have an air purifier going and I just point it at a different stack periodically

  • @quantumangel
    @quantumangel ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The generator actually has a fan.
    That means it's constantly pumping air into the bin, and most of the ozone will actually come out to the room.
    If you want ozone to be contained, you should put the generator *inside* the bin.

    • @ToolboxDIY
      @ToolboxDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do not put the generator in the bin. The generator relies on "normal" air to take a regular O2 molecule and converts it to an O3 molecule . If you stick in the bin, it will greatly reduce the rate of O3 generation. Furthermore, O3 is heavier so it will start pushing out the normal air first. Yes, it will push O3 into the room, but that's exactly why I stated you should leave the room.

  • @gooddogtrainingservices5351
    @gooddogtrainingservices5351 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can see why baking soda wouldn’t work it just absorbs the odor in the air but not anything about the order in the record paper where is ozone actually neutralizes the odor itself

    FYI that ozone can damage and kill plants, but I'm not sure how much there needs to be to do that. So be careful of any house plants if trying this indoors.

    Isn’t ozone dangerous? They recalled those sharper image air purifiers because they were generating ozone.

    • @gooddogtrainingservices5351
      @gooddogtrainingservices5351 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is dangerous according to the epa. I wouldn’t use them where you will be spending time, but your method allows time to let it degrade so I’m all for trying this method. I found a portable battery powered one you can put in the bin, so no hose needed, do you think that would work?
      From epa:
      . The purpose of this document is to provide accurate information regarding the use of ozone-generating devices in indoor occupied spaces. This information is based on the most credible scientific evidence currently available.
      Some vendors suggest that these devices have been approved by the federal government for use in occupied spaces. To the contrary, NO agency of the federal government has approved these devices for use in occupied spaces. Because of these claims, and because ozone can cause health problems at high concentrations, several federal government agencies have worked in consultation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to produce this public information document.

    • @ToolboxDIY

      Ozone is dangerous as you discovered. However, these small machines don't put out a lot, we are containing it mostly, and as I said in the video, I leave the room during and for an hour after letting it run.
