New gen congoer and tactical cosplayer here, I'll have things to add to this conversation: 1. About the part of cosplay nowadays being turned into a beauty contest of some sort, people like seeing beautiful sights, and they also want to be praised for being beautiful/cute/handsome cuz it's part of human nature, ako nga rin eh bilang lalaki gustong-gusto ko nakakakita ng mga magagandang cosplayer (I don't mean anything malicious by this), pero syempre bilang otaku alam ko na ang essence ng cosplay ay character portrayal. In the end, most of us will appreciate anyone who portrays a character faithfully no matter what their face looks like. 2. We all know that people follow trends, that's why most will cosplay characters from trending series, gacha game characters are the new trend that I observe among cosplayers. I understand why people tend to follow trends, as many of us are wired to think that if most are doing it, we ourselves should be doing it, but as a romcom and music series lover, it saddens me a bit that most cosplayers nowadays don't seem to bother digging series that are either obscure, old, or belong to a non-mainstream genre, for example, I attended a con back in July 2023, there were a lot of Oshi No Ko cosers but only 1 Love Live, no Idolmaster, no K-ON, no Bang Dream, come November 2023, the amount of Oshi No Ko cosplayers reduced to a point that it's noticeable, it's like people just follow what others do and don't strive to be different.
I don’t understand why there are people who complain about seeing a lot of the same cosplays? I remember a time when everyone was dresses as L in a con. There was also a lot of AoT/SnK cosplays too at one point. Just strange.
