These sound marvellous. I've not had the pleasure of listening to one of the larger 202 or 203 models, but it would be interesting to compare the sound with a 163
Nice. I have one of these, unfortunately, a previous owner dis-embowelled it. So I have my 1970's system where the horn used to be, and a pioneer PL12D deck in the tope section.
what is a fair price for this kind of machine? does the 157 come close in terms of sound or should I just continue saving up for a 163? greetings from the Netherlands!
Hi Please see links The 157 did not have the reentrant horn The sound quality of the 163 was never bettered HMV 163 currently for sale in UK www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=hmv+163+gramophone&_trksid=p2380057.m4084.l1313 HMV 157 information www.gramophones.info/gramophones.hmv.157.html HMV 163 information www.gramophones.info/gramhmv163.html
The needles were designed to last one side only. They wear down as the record plays and the point becomes wider which damages the record if not changed to a sharper point with a new needle. Long playing needles were developed for auto changers from 1932. See the video of my HMV Model 542 RadioGram

Fabulous, great Gramophone!
Why does the needle need to be changed?
The needles were designed to last one side only. They wear down as the record plays and the point becomes wider which damages the record if not changed to a sharper point with a new needle. Long playing needles were developed for auto changers from 1932.
