Having spent quite a lot of time recording Richie and hanging with him in his Greenwich village studio in NYC, I miss him too. Not only was he an outstanding human being, but a deeply spiritual one as well. His legacy will no doubt live on forever.
When I first recorded Richie's version of this back in '93 (30 years ago) I thought it would be hard to beat John Martyn's version, but as soon as he opened his mouth and started singing, I knew I was wrong. I'm pretty sure we did the whole thing in one take. That was the video version you see here. I also recorded him doing this song for his album "Cuts to the Chase" which can be found on Rhino records. One take as well. He was a wonder, and a wonderful human being. I miss him.
Richie Haven will always be remembered as a great artist and Legend. His voice is timeless to me. This performance still has the same timeless vibe as it did when I first heard this track , when my background vocals were recorded for this video performance back in the 90's . I didn't get to meet him directly, but heard he was a cool person. I was(and still am) excited to have been chosen by the producers, to have my voice sing background for a Legend, on this project. Wow!
Stunning. Love this John Martyn song and love Richi Havens sininging it here. Saw Richie Havens live as well as Johm Martyn. Both are so missed, such talents. Thanks so much for uploading this.
I am always thankful for my John Martyn moments... Especially the live versions provided here. Richie covers the truly great songs wether the listener knows it or not. And he does so brilliantly...
I have always loved this track, knowing it from the version by Spill, #BackInTheDay but I am loving this soulful rendition that gives me fond memories of the music I grew up with as a child. I honestly cannot say which of these versions came first, but I love both, and there is something so inherently beautiful and cosmic about the music and the lyrics. x
Great version by a great man, but...Look for the q10a post on TH-cam of a sublime version by the original artists John Martyn just a few months before his untimely death. Search - Don't want to know ('bout evil) & My Creator
I already listened to it a year ago, sublime as you said. Both Martyn and Heavens were great singers, so deeply human, with a gift to touch your heart and feelings so easily. Eternal blessings for both of them.
Although I've never agreed with Mr. Havens "communist utopia" rhetoric, this song is hands-down, one of the best adult contemporary songs of all time. Thanks for the post!
@@geraldmorgan2539 A society is only as good as the people within it. Good people don't make their fellow humans suffer, and threaten them with violence because they don't agree with them. It has *nothing* to do with living in a democracy, so don't try to pin it on that....
What will you be doing at the age of 70? Commanding a stage singing a great song for an appreciative audience because you are a music legend or sitting in front of your screen complaining about someone else's accomplishments. Still.
Magic. Funky soulful version by Ritchie. I think Mr. Martyn would approve, love John's version also. If it keeps his spirit flying ,that's all right with me. Peace.

Television series'Rebus' put on this song, John Martyns. I had to find it on TH-cam, it had so much soul.
In the novels, Rebus often puts John Martyn on the record player, particularly the album "Solid Air".
so appropriate at this time...you are still amongst us.
Great version

Richie Havens covering John Martyn? Music porn
I have to ask what does (music porn) mean? We learn by asking things. so I'm asking. I'm just seeking knowledge.
