    Dave. The hydrolic had a nitrogen charge tank for the quick lift to make up for the small pump. I had a 6000 years ago, put the rear tires on my Case 400. I still have the rear fenders, sterring wheel and gages off that 6000. You can have them if you come get them. Richard

    The 6000 was much like the IHC 560, once the recall was completed they did well. We had one with the diesel motor, it had a M&W turbo on it and performed well, easy on fuel and plenty of power. Good advice not to power shift under full load as that is a good way to wear it out, just like the early IHC TA system, with a bit of operator fore sight they do last well enough, if abused they all will give issues. The designer did go over to Deere and developed their powershift trans, only Deere allowed him to do it his way, the rest is history as they say.

    Here is the biggest problem with the 6000 is that the diesel engine was a gas engine was modified to diesel with a heavy pan and head. It only has three main bearings and developed about 90 hp overpowering the mains and the select-o - speed transmission. Great small baler tractor.

  • @christianspain3015

    Hey Dave, the blue and white 6000's are the best. The original 6000's were red and white and had their share of issues. The blue and white 6000's (Commanders) had most of the issues resolved. Also the Select-O-Speed at that point should be beefier than the earlier ones.

  • @georgehunsinger7209
    @georgehunsinger7209 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wanted to give you my two cents. First the Ford transmission you have is called a selecto-speed. My the time the 6000 commander came out, they had no issues with the transmission. The early ones back in the NAA series did have trans. issues. The motors were not a problem in the 6000, but the hydraulic system was the big issue. When they worked right, and held their pressure, the tractor could sit in the barn for several days, and you could pull the lever and lift a plow or cultivator off the ground with out starting it. The man that invented the trans. begged them not to produce it when they did. He said it needed fine tunning and the bugs worked out. The company said to bad, you need to have it ready, because we want to introduce it in our 50th.golden jubilee tractor, and thats the way it is, or hit the road. He said goodbye, and they ignored him, produced it and some problems, but had them worked out by the time the commander came out, which was built from 1964 to 1967. You are right, the early red 6000 were junk. They were so bad, that they offered a complete new tractor swap to the farmer, except he had to keep his tires for the new one. Oh and my the way, that same same man they let go, did get the bugs worked of his transmission, went to work for John Deere and was responsible for the 8 speed power shift in the 4020's that never had a issue, and was bullet proof.

    Some guys sure are opinionated about a piece of machinery! I have an early 6000 gas, renumbered SN 140, I believe, that was rebuilt at the factory, one of approx 300 that Ford called back and totally dismantled and rebuilt before reshipping them to dealers. It's my understanding that the main problem with the first tractors is that they leaked like a sieve. They had some at the Ford experimental farm in Georgia and the Farm Manager made the guys move them off the concrete slab because they leaked so much. One has to remember that this is a tractor built 60 years ago and is quite rare, it's not one that someone is going to go out to the field and plow all day. I would take Richard up on his offer of parts. It is also missing some side panels but they are mostly straight sheet steel and not real hard to make. Although parts are getting harder and harder to find, the SOS transmission is really quite simple, similar to a Model T trans, and parts can be made for it. A great find for $150 IMHO!

      I read where Howard Simpson, the inventor of the modern automatic in cars developed a six speed planetary for tractors but he couldn't get any manufacturer to license it. Perhaps Select O Speed is a reverse engineered Simpson transmission? He had worked for Ford but quit when he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, then he had his most productive years and lived 17 more years. Chrysler copied four of his patents for the first Torqueflite, they later agreed to pay license fees. That era was interesting as per power transmission.

    I ran one for a few weeks for a neighbor when I was a kid. We borrowed it from time to time. Never had a problem with it. This one was a diesel. Dad said it was a ford 223 gas engine with a diesel head. It is my understanding that shifting it under load would damage the select o speed. I always just put in the gear I was going to use with the inching pedal.

      The story that was told by a SOS owner on Classic Tractor Fever was that the engineer/designer went on vacation and told Ford(Corp.) NOT to release the SOS tractors as the transmissions had not been perfected. Ford was in a big hurry to get those tractors out and someone didn’t pass the engineer’s message along and in the end it all turned out well for John Deere. I remember seeing posters of the Commanders on Hank Kimball’s office wall on Green Acres.

    The transmission is not a hydro - only IH had them, and they were less efficient and used more fuel than the equivilent manual transmission.
    The SelectoSpeed, to give it its correct name, utilised a series of hydraulic clutches and band brakes to achieve the different gear ratio selections.
    I believe it was one Harold Brock, who was originally on the Product Engineering team at Ford, who came up with the change on the move gearbox during his time with the Company. He wanted to refine its operation more, as he wasn't happy with it, as was, but Ford Board Members over ruled him, and put the transmission on market anyway. In protest, Brock resigned and went and worked for John Deere instead, and was instrumental in developing their power shift transmission, which basically wiped the floor with the SelectoSpeed transmission.
    I would certainly agree that the Ford 6000 tractor, whether in its original grey and red, grey and blue or, in its final incarnation, all blue, was one sleek looking machine - very stylish and futuristic, no question. Ford 'management', in their rush to get it to market, were to blame for its failure. It was basically under developed, utilising a lot of new technology that hadn't been properly tested.

      I know the only repair we ever had to do on the ford 5000 i used to run when i worked for a local farmer from the time i was 11 until the summer before my senior year right brfore i turned 18 and got a job workin on cars instead of farming with i do miss working in the dirr still to this day but thats besudes the point i know we had to put a battery in it one time and when i was around 14yrs old and i just rebuilt a starter for him about a year ago cause it funally gave out but other than that we ran that tractor pretty hard and it was a old tractor when i started working for him in 2005 pulling a plow and a rotor tiller for the garden and did a bunch of bushhogging as well and once fall came around we used the pto to run his huge plowboy enginnnered log splitter with a convarer belt that carried the split wood in to dump in a pin where he would scoop up with the skid steer and put in the big would barn in one of its sixs different pins depending on if ut was oak or hickory where he would dump the cut wood in until it was full and left to season for atleast a solid year but usely 2yrs before we would sale to the bbq stands to burn in there smokers and bbq pits the log splitter also had a convarer belt that fed the pre cut logs to the splitter to be busted and throrwn on to the other convarer belt to be hauled off to the cut off pin and that ford 5000 would get hooked up to the log splitter the first cool day of fall and run that splitter everyday until spring came around and it was time to prep for the garden it would run that log slpitter when i get home frome school until dark and on the days i didnt have school we would crank it and run it all day sometimes 9-11hrs a day and the only time we shut it off was during a lunch break so we didnt have to listen to it while we ate and took as short break from the noise and the only other issue i ever remember on that old ford 5000 was wiggling the high-low gear shifter back and fourth while holding the key in the crank position until it would fire up and run since the nuetrul saftey switch was jacked up or something it always cranked within a couple seconds of jiggling the h-l gear selector and thats how i was told to crank it when i was 11 and god only knows how many years it was already like that before i came along and is steal like that to this day 17yrs later and it steel needs a jiggle before the old work horse will fire up but the time i have on that 5000 and how hard i worked a saw it get worked and all the years before i came along of being worked hard i believe i have very good reasons to be bias torward the ford 5000 and i will have to stand by the ford 5000 from what ive seen they are dead ass reliable work hourses and i would own one over a 6000 just cause i know what a ford 5000 brings to the table i cant deny it but as far as conversation pieces go the fordd 6000 is a way more rare and will deffinetly always get more attention at a from the hobbiest collecters oldtimers and spectators they are definitely more of a conversation piece and for free too i wouldnt of pass it up either

      The 223 six was a larger version of the 215 also used in Ford cars and trucks. They were efficient on fuel. When first used in 1952 the 215 produced more power than the '51 flathead v8 that wasn't replaced until 1954 - the same year the 215 was increased to 223 and called the the Mileage Maker. For '52 Ford had to find a way to make the flathead 8 produce more power than then new six, and it barely did so.

    If that is factory propane, that is very rare. I suspect it is a add on. That is a 223 pickup engine. My dad had a 66 short narrow with one in it. It was tougher than rawhide. If you can't find parts for it, I think the 250 and 300 used the same bolt pattern. That select o speed has four sections of sun gears with bands that are hydraulic shifted. Pretty simple system compared to JD power shift. Like most power shifts operator error caused the most failures. That and dirty fluid by hooking up to every piece of equipment in the neighborhood with dirty oil in the cylinders. A JD power shift for a 30 series on up will knock the heck out of 1000 dollar bill, rebuilt or new. The old 20 series are almost as high.

It was dealer installed not factory to the best of my knowledge. I changed everyone of the ones I worked on just to have the original power as it cuts down power by ten to twenty percent on LP and I haven't ever had too much power in that size tractor. Propane has more expensive parts than any save money item I can come down to
