I visited Castle Garden in Wyoming back in 2009, and found the vast majority of the petroglyphs there damaged, defaced or destroyed.
Visiting Legend Rock in 2015, I asked the nice lady who curates that site about it, she said the destruction is now total.
      It's heartbreaking.

One day after high school in 1966 I showed my best friend some petroglyphs near Blythe, California. A week later he was eager to revisit them so I took him out into the desert canyon and while he was viewing them I went rock-climbing. I finally realized I had been hearing him hitting big rocks with a smaller rock and figured he was making his own rock-carvings but when I went to see what he was doing I discovered he was destroying the petroglyphs. I was angry and asked him why he was doing it and he said that when he mentioned the glyphs to his Catholic Priest was told to destroy all pagan creations. I have kept secret all my other discoveries.

There are a number of glyphs here, and throughout the Colorado-Green River drainages that are much larger, older and fainter than the Pueblo/Fremont glyph/graphs. Some are as tall as the cliffs. They date to approx 3,200-4,000 years ago and appear similar to Toltec art with human skulls and decapitated heads. Some glyphs depict white guys with beards, mustaches, helmets, swords, shields and horses, perhaps 3,000 years before the Spanish. The geatest glyph secrets of Utah are yet to be recognized or identified. They will change our understanding of the history of North America.

@@rookstone9811 I'm finding them in the White Rocks formation, and underlying Jurassic sandstone, in the Glen-Wahweap-Paria-Coyote Creek Canyon and Echo Cliffs areas, either side of US 89 between Old Paria and the Glen Canyon dam. Photos I've reviewed suggest they are spread throughout the canyon country. They are so large that you generally have to back up to see the full image. They frequently draw faces using the natural shape of the stone, or in the stone, and add a minimum of lines to create the image. Some of the walls in this video have them. I first became aware of these in the Grand Canyon. They left more archeological sites than any other prehistoric group in Utah. They have not been named, or even acknowledged, by academic archeology, other than the broadly construed Desert Archaic handle.

It can be seen from US89 looking southwest just east of Greenehaven, AZ at the white cliff wall. This would be about mile marker 3 just inside AZ. The entire cliff wall is full of giant glyphs for miles. Glen Canyon has a new archeologist, and I don't believe she's aware of these. If you want something to be preserved longer than a year, do you make easily accessible to everyone’s reach? If these are centuries old the terrain might have been at a different level than it is currently due to erosion, land and mudslides, flash floods. They all seem to be along canyon wall along water ways that seem to show a higher water level at the time of their production. Since the creators of these glyphs are unknown, could they be self portraits? It just seems to create more questions than answers.

The pecked curvilinear nucleated glyphs are definitely older than the one's created with red ocher. In Northern California, they date back 5,000 years or more. The red ocher triangle bodies can be seen all over the western US. It is a common shamanistic theme from taking Datura root and having dreamtime. Many of the pecked glyphs in Northern California predate shamanism and it is hard to see someone hallucinating while at the same time going through such labor intensive work. Plus, Datura root/seed leaves are not that plentiful in Norcal.

thanks for sharing this info, a friend of mine drank tea of datura and tripped hard for 2-3 days and i'm very happy he doesn't have lasting negative problems from this as clearly he had no idea what he was getting into..
if you want to learn about the older ones, which by the way have specific shapes found all over the world, i would recommend Anthony L. Peratt's papers, very interesting and detailed work and unlike what some critics say, his hypothesis is very plausible..
they can be found to download for free and title is:

I disagree the red ocher ones I thought were older. You can't date the stone but you can date organic material. So to say the stone is older than the red is accurate but not necessarily the drawing on the stone, because those can't be dated using carbon dating. I think the red ocher drawings are much older because to make the engraving one you would need some type of hard tool.

Hi rookstone!!! Really appreciate the video you’ve made here, great stuff! You’ve done a great job of archiving and sharing these incredible and often mysterious pieces of ancient art with the rest of the world.
I’ve spent quite of bit of time myself backpacking the San Rafael Swell solo and with friends. The Little Grand Canyon in central Utah specifically. As such, the pictograph panel in Buckhorn Wash has a special significance for me as I’m sure it has for many people, past and present.
The reason I’m writing this comment is mainly because I was looking over some old pictures I had taken of the Buckhorn Wash Pictograph panel and noticed a peculiar detail that I have not seen mentioned anywhere on the internet at all! I really wanted someone who was familiar with Barrier Canyon Style specifically to look at it and tell me what they think!
Anyway, I’ve linked two images on a hosting platform so that hopefully you will see them. One is of a specific part of the panel and the other is a satellite image of the Little Grand Canyon… My theory is that the lines in the right of the image of the panel are actually a very simple map of the canyon itself!! I think if you take a close look at the satellite imagery next to the part in reference you will see what I’m talking about. This is super SUPER exciting for me because I think it would at least resolve one tiny piece of the mystery of exactly what these panels are supposed to mean and maybe even be a piece of prehistoric cartography. I also think it would go a long way in supporting the common idea that these BCS panels are meant as a ritual of safe passage through dangerous/uncertain terrain. I haven’t seen this particular detail mentioned ANYWHERE!
    Here are the images:
    ibb.co/8bdsNVD
    ibb.co/Dtw8NSW
(This is the same panel shown in 12:39)
Please, please let me know what you think if you get the chance!

A few days ago, I was on TH-cam and saw a panel with squiggly lines, and I thought, is that directions thru this canyon area, perhaps to the next community or their enemies. Its really odd that no one can decipher these panels. Its time to think outside the box, because conventional thinking not working too well. Much Luck to you.

@@dans9215 There are examples of stylised terrain maps painted or incised on rock by Australian Aborigines, dating back up to 30,000 years BCE. Long distance migration and trading routes by sea and land were documented in so-called 'song lines' , memorised and passed on through the generations in the form of recited and sung stories that contained itemised lists of notable outcrops of rock, water holes and animal migration trails. Also, there were physical star maps to aid navigation at night, made from sticks tied with plant fibres, with principle stars marked by small sea shells. R (Australia)

Supposedly that is "the place where God sleeps" or slept depending on interpretation, and there is definitely an atmosphere to the place.

fascinating pictures. How can one determine the age? It doesn't look like they were painted with charcoal but with earth pigments or scratched into the stone.
Do you have an explanation of what the figures represent? Are they ghosts? Many trapezoidal and triangular figures are particularly striking. Does anyone know more about this?
In any case, it looks very different from the Stone Age figures found here in Europe's caves...

The ones in Horse Shoe Canyon in Utah are my favorite...so evocative....are they gods? Spirits? People wearing costumes representing spirits? Long dead ancestors?....Goodness we will never know for sure, but when you see these things first hand it's a truly amazing experience. Don't know how much longer these will be around to be honest...more and more vandalism at these sites and even some people painting over them or trying to steal them. If you get the chance, please go see them while they still exist, well worth the effort.

    • @psterud
      @psterud ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, I agree about their evocativeness. I so badly want to know what they were thinking when they created these, and what if any purpose they served, and it pains me that we can never know. At the same time, though, there is something so very human about these things that I think we can all feel deep in ourselves with some intimacy. We are a creative species, and continue to create in a similar way, with symbolism and lore and ritual, with a sense for the profound and the sublime.

Most of the "alien" like drawings look like ceramic amphoras that were given human characteristics (anthropomorphism).
This area was very dry in summer and very cold in winter, so storing food was very important for the people living there, and the Anasazis are known for making very nice looking ceramics.
This is definitively just a theory, but it makes much more sense than all those people saying the drawings represent "aliens"

    • @lonl123
      @lonl123 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@PatG-xd8qn I certainly don't think they are Aliens, nor did I allude to that. My pet theory is that much like the Hopi Kachina spirits (The Kachina religion started after the collapse of the Anasazi and the great migrations) I think they possibly had costumes to represent spirits and probably had elaborate costumes representing many things...and the rock art is a representation of that...or is a representation of the actual spirits. Goodness...just to be an invisible spectator during that time...I bet it was exotic and really cool.
My stepfather was a Hopi Indian and he took me and my mom to a few Ceremonial dances when I was a kid and at my first one I was kind of scared, but it was so cool. I feel honored that I got to see this stuff and my stepdad's family treated us as family. Some of it was really weird and I didn't understand what was going on, the strangest being is that a long line of dancers in Kachina costumes were dancing in a line, and as they were slowly forming a circle a really scary looking Kachina came out, separate from the dancers...and he walked really slowly. He walked over to where the spectators were sitting and there was a middle age Hopi woman sitting near to us...and this Kachina started staring at her and pointed at her...and the woman just started crying and wailing....The scary Kachina then followed the circle of dancers and then walked off the field where the dance was being held. The woman had to be helped up and escorted away....My stepdad was one of the dancers so I couldn't ask him at the time what the hell that was all about.
A few days later after we were driving home, I asked him what it was all about and he said I was too young to understand, and that was that. I read much later as an adult, that the woman might have been doing bad things and the Kachina was sort of "Scaring her straight" that if she didn't change her ways she would have bad things happen to her...but alas I just don't know for sure....My step dad and mom divorced a few years later so I never got a chance to ask him what the deal was when I got older.
That was the image I had when I saw the rock art in person, a ceremony with costumed dancers and rituals. The art on the wall were probably direct representations of the actual spirits. Sadly, we will never know for sure and I hate the whole "They were aliens" thing.

A good read for many people interested in B. C . Americas ( before Columbus) . " Americas B. C . by Professor Barry Fell and his revised edition . Revised because of new evidence , artifacts and theories , many presented by readers of his first edition . I know personally one guy who convinced him unequivocally that his theory of " Mystery Hill " being of an esoteric nature involving Druids was a compound built by the Knights Templar , simply a fortified base camp from which they conducted renaissance expeditions . Prof. Fell saw the logic and likelihood of it being the latter and not former that he made no attempt to defend his Druid theory . It was literally a " Doh " ,smack self in head moment . The guy I speak of once gave an over two hour lecture to the Woods Hole Research Institute on the subject of The Oak Island Money Pit . ( not the egg heads , the boots on the ground, divers and engineers ) . They were blown away by his research and hands on ground work . As he described it " if i was wearing a ring they would have knelt and kissed it " .
