I have read on logging forums of folks throwing out the angle charts and going back to 60, 30, 0 degrees for all large chain and 25 degrees for smaller saw chain. they say that their saws cut just as well with these angles and it avoids confusion. That is, 60 degrees on the rear knob adjustment, 30 degrees on the bottom knob adjustment, and keeping the 10 degree down angle set at zero.
Those angles would work well. That’s what is great about the grinder, you can play with the angles and know for sure what angle your doing, and do what you like best. I like an aggressive angle, even if it dulls easier, I just swap chains and keep going. I can grind or file them later when I get home .👍 Thanks for the comment, thanks for watching.

The manual is garbage. So complicated. Those charts are almost impossible to understand. They should have just said "Eyeball it, and adjust it as such."
I have a cheaper one from Princes Auto.. (Canada's Harbor Freight).. it works well when obviously set proper but the chain break doesn't hold chain still and tends to jump up a bit and when a little too aggressive on the break will move off 30 degree.. the hydraulic assist and the better quality built will be a game changer to how I sharpen now.. great informative video..
Very good video. Used to run a tool sharpening business years ago and had an earlier version of Oregon's best sharpener at the time. Just bought the 620 this past weekend and waiting for delivery. Paid extra to get a borazon wheel...and will soon buy a diamond wheel for our carbide chains.

I just ordered that model sick of paying someone to sharpen my chains I was at fleet farm today and had the $150 timber tuff one in the cart I put it back and ordered this one hope I made the right choice

I don’t, I still do those by hand. If you use the grinder for that, you swap the stone to the thicker one, set the motor straight up and down. There is no setting to set the height for rakers, so you have to do that manually. I found it was way quicker to do the rakers by hand, either in a chain vise or on the saw.

Saw Surgeon hello man, eye the grinder lol....as GDF likes his unit I like my 520....once you have the grinder you will wish you would have bought it a long time ago.....you can grind a chain that easily cuts as good and long as a factory new chain, and that should be your goal!!!
Kyle Studebaker) My employer has an el-cheapo one much like my dad's. I use it for work chains and on the rare occasion when I get into something nasty with my own chains. Otherwise I hand file my personal stuff. I cut primarily in woodlots so there is little contamination and am pretty cautious when cutting near obstructions. I'm no Buckin' Billy Ray, but I can put together a pretty sweet cutting chain by hand. As for work, our crews do a lot of flush cutting of stumps... Our crews go through an amazing volume of chain for no more cuts than they make! I can see there is absolutely no comparison between the Oregon and the plastic bodied units. I'll have to look a little closer into these models. To this point I have managed to stay out of fence rows. I have friends that have had to deal with that stuff. Way too much debris for my liking! Thankyou. Very well done. Looking for a video that explains the differences between a 410 520 and 620 besides price and that the 620 has hydraulic assist.
Brother the red large nylon nut at the back is only for the table mounting position. Oregon provides a normal steel nut that is accessible by a 13mm spanner between the wall and the machine. No need to build up the wall to get clearance!
No one has emphasized that each tooth should be ground the same length for optimal cutting performance. In order to achieve this, one has to locate the shortest tooth first, make a stop setting , then grind all teeth to this length. If this is not practical, that is if you would be grinding away most of your chain teeth, then you may not want to do this. Set this chain aside for rough work, but save your best chains for falling where optimum performance is required.
Tooth length makes not difference. Raker depth, uneven sharpness, loose bar grooves, bar rails at different heights, worn out chain drivers....these things do make a saw cut to one side or poorly.......I am a Michigan logger and circle sawmill owner for 30 years
Good Day Farm check out ‘Buckin Billy Ray’ on TH-cam. He did an extensive video test on this very subject and came to a similar conclusion. I had always suspected tooth length, but never studied it carefully, now it has been proven by several...ps.. I still check tooth length out of superstition and my sharpening customers like the looks of it much better !...hehe Gary in Michigan

Thanks! I don’t remember how many wheels it came with, I think three, but they were all different sizes. I tried doing rakers a few times, but the set up was too time consuming for me, I can do them by hand much quicker.
That would sure be a handy tool to have now that I all my chains need to be sharpened LOL. It's to bad that it won't do square ground chain or am I mistaken. Be well brother.
My concern about bench grinders like yours is how consistent they are. In other words, how well does the vice mechanism on your grinder hold the chain? If it's not holding the chain perfectly still for each and every tooth, you will obviously end up with inconsistent grinds, right? Another question is how well the grinder is set up for changing direction for grinding the opposite teeth? I'm sure that you've used a chain that wasn't ground the same on both sides, which causes the saw to essentially "walk off" and, more to the point, not cut straight. I have both liked and subscribed to your channel, so please keep on making the informative videos. 👍
In the time I had and used this grinder, I didn’t see any issues…. Although I can understand your concerns. I think it comes down to the quality of the machine. This one is built very well…. But I’m sure you’d have those issue with lesser quality machines. Unfortunately, I don’t have it anymore, I don’t cut firewood anymore, so I can’t give you a long term review. @@GoodDayFarm Would you like to sell the grinder? In my experience, manufacturers tend to increase their margins over time by "modifying" their designs. For example, they may decided to sub what were once quality steel parts for cheaper/inferior pot metal parts that aren't as durable. In short, I trust an older unit over a newer one, so let me know if your grinder is presently collecting dust in your shop. Have a good one.
I didnt really hear him go over the setting thats got to do with the chain angle, its where you slide it it back and forth.. I was wondering if someone could explain?
That depends on the grinder the Stihl grinders are different. I think 40 degrees on a Stihl grinder is the same as 50 degrees on the Oregon grinder. That would give you a strong edge on the cutter, not as sharp, but durable. That would be acceptable Personally, I prefer a sharper edge, even if it isn’t as strong. I am confused about the direction of wheel spinning in relation into teeth on opposite sides? My question probably is also confusing, hope it is translatable?
On this grinder, unfortunately the wheel direction is not reversible, so one side it grinds into the teeth, but the other side it grinds away. I’ve never seen an issue with this though.
G'day, what do u do with the teeth on the side where the grinder 'exists' the sharp side of the tooth. That is, the grinding wheel 'enters' one side where it leaves no burrs. However burrs will develop on the teeth of the other side. Obviously, that side is not as sharp and will not cut as well. Then you have a chain that will not cut straight.
Well... in my experience, both sides are equally sharp, the burr... if any... is not an issue. Also, this would not effect if it cuts straight, that would be more of a raker or user issue.
Either... you have great reviews on all the different options. I was leaning toward the 620. Just wanted your opinion on, if you could have one for the bench and one for the field, which ones you would prefer.
If you do a lot of chains, the 620 is great for the bench. Otherwise a chain vise and a Stihl 2-n-1 or Granberg would be fine... if you’re not just doing free hand. For in the field... I always take extra chains and just swap out as needed.... but I will have a proper round file and flat file with depth gauge in case I need it. That’s another great use for the 2-n-1.... as long as you set your tooth angles standard. If you’re doing some custom angle, then free hand or Granberg.
I’ve never used a manual one, but the hydraulic is great! I’ve never had an issue with it. Holds very tight as long as you select the correct chain gauge.
Sorry for the stupid question but I’m new to grinding and just bought this grinder and getting it set up. How to you know which setting to set on the chain clamp?
Never a stupid question.. 😊 Depending what brand of chains you run, the manufacturer will have suggested angles for that specific chain. But a general rule is 25-30 degrees. Unless you’re killing, then it’s 10 degrees. Hope that helps.
I'm now on my second 610 230. The second got sent back today for inspection only having ground 1 chain. Both leaking oil from the top of the ram. Have you heard of this problem before?
Hi! Yeah, I do the rakers by hand. You can do them with this machine, but the set up seemed difficult and clumsy. It’s super quick and easy to file them by hand once I mount the chain on the saw. As for square grind, unfortunately this machine can not do that. Great questions! Thanks for watching!
Great video , Iv'e got the 410-120 setting in my amazon cart right now just checking out all the Oregon grinder video's i can before pulling the trigger on it. All of their grinder's seem to look like their all built about the same quality with the addition of some extra bell's an whistle's. I think for what i need the 410-120 will be ok. Yeah i fall into the group of people that had my chains wrecked by a shop that didn't know what they were doin with a grinder 20 years ago and been hand filling ever since. Anybody got any pros or cons on the 410 ? Thank's
I think the only difference is the vise. Make sure it is set up properly, and go slow. Unless you plan to replace the grinding wheel with a CBN, just do light taps and keep the pink stone clean. Thanks for watching, take care!

Good question. If it gets hot enough to discolor the steel, not just burning off pitch or oil, but if you blue the tooth.. it changes the temper in the steel. It won’t hold an edge as good or at all.
Good afternoon, I live in Brazil, I imported a current sharpener oregon 620-120, but after I sharpen a current it heats up a lot, my network is 220v and I use a transformer for 110v, so can that be why it gets so hot? Does yours after sharpening a chain get hot too?

TWO COMMENTS,, ,Do the rakers with a 3/8 wheel at 10*,,, and don't run the grinder in the cold, this ran out the oil in the motor bearings , and caused a burr at the chizel on the exact machine you have. FYI
Great video, great explanation, but the grinder itself is vert poor quality it is NOT even close to professional grinder, also the grinding wheel has no reverse, angle adjustments are very crude and approximate. I am sure it beats the file, but it ends there. Thanks again for the video.
Are you redressing the wheel? I check the wheel every chain, and usually redress every 2nd or 3rd chain. Of course now I have a CBN wheel, so I don't need to reshape the wheel anymore. Yay!

It they’re real gunky, I soak them in kerosene, overnight minimum, and hit them with a wire brush if needed.

I really wish Oregon would do an initial set up and fine tuning video for this. I find that the manual that came with mine is not easy to understand.

Brother the red large nylon nut at the back is only for the table mounting position. Oregon provides a normal steel nut that is accessible by a 13mm spanner between the wall and the machine. No need to build up the wall to get clearance!

No one has emphasized that each tooth should be ground the same length for optimal cutting performance. In order to achieve this, one has to locate the shortest tooth first, make a stop setting , then grind all teeth to this length. If this is not practical, that is if you would be grinding away most of your chain teeth, then you may not want to do this. Set this chain aside for rough work, but save your best chains for falling where optimum performance is required.
As long as you set the depth gauges, rakers, it’s not critical that every tooth be the same length. 👍😎
Tooth length makes not difference. Raker depth, uneven sharpness, loose bar grooves, bar rails at different heights, worn out chain drivers....these things do make a saw cut to one side or poorly.......I am a Michigan logger and circle sawmill owner for 30 years

Good Day Farm check out ‘Buckin Billy Ray’ on TH-cam. He did an extensive video test on this very subject and came to a similar conclusion. I had always suspected tooth length, but never studied it carefully, now it has been proven by several...ps.. I still check tooth length out of superstition and my sharpening customers like the looks of it much better !...hehe Gary in Michigan

I don’t remember how many wheels it came with, I think three, but they were all different sizes.
I tried doing rakers a few times, but the set up was too time consuming for me, I can do them by hand much quicker.
That would sure be a handy tool to have now that I all my chains need to be sharpened LOL. It's to bad that it won't do square ground chain or am I mistaken. Be well brother.

My concern about bench grinders like yours is how consistent they are. In other words, how well does the vice mechanism on your grinder hold the chain? If it's not holding the chain perfectly still for each and every tooth, you will obviously end up with inconsistent grinds, right? Another question is how well the grinder is set up for changing direction for grinding the opposite teeth? I'm sure that you've used a chain that wasn't ground the same on both sides, which causes the saw to essentially "walk off" and, more to the point, not cut straight. I have both liked and subscribed to your channel, so please keep on making the informative videos. 👍
In the time I had and used this grinder, I didn’t see any issues…. Although I can understand your concerns. I think it comes down to the quality of the machine. This one is built very well…. But I’m sure you’d have those issue with lesser quality machines.
Unfortunately, I don’t have it anymore, I don’t cut firewood anymore, so I can’t give you a long term review.

@@GoodDayFarm Would you like to sell the grinder? In my experience, manufacturers tend to increase their margins over time by "modifying" their designs. For example, they may decided to sub what were once quality steel parts for cheaper/inferior pot metal parts that aren't as durable. In short, I trust an older unit over a newer one, so let me know if your grinder is presently collecting dust in your shop. Have a good one.

I didnt really hear him go over the setting thats got to do with the chain angle, its where you slide it it back and forth.. I was wondering if someone could explain?
The cutter tooth angle is set where you rotate the vise, where I talk about 25, 30, or 35 degrees.
Have only watched this video, just got the grinder, haven't used it yet. Have you done a video on grinding the rakers?
I never did do a video for the rakers. I found it quicker and easier to do them by hand, either on the saw, or in a chain vise.
my local stihl shop sharpens customers chains at 30 degrees and sets the angle grinder wheel at 40 degrees. 40 degrees too steep?
That depends on the grinder the Stihl grinders are different.
I think 40 degrees on a Stihl grinder is the same as 50 degrees on the Oregon grinder.
That would give you a strong edge on the cutter, not as sharp, but durable.
That would be acceptable
Personally, I prefer a sharper edge, even if it isn’t as strong.

I am confused about the direction of wheel spinning in relation into teeth on opposite sides? My question probably is also confusing, hope it is translatable?
On this grinder, unfortunately the wheel direction is not reversible, so one side it grinds into the teeth, but the other side it grinds away.
I’ve never seen an issue with this though.

I’ve never used a standard vise grinder, but it is pretty nice not have to lock and unlock the vise for every tooth. Definitely speeds things up.
G'day, what do u do with the teeth on the side where the grinder
'exists' the sharp side of the tooth. That is, the grinding wheel
'enters' one side where it leaves no burrs. However burrs will develop
on the teeth of the other side. Obviously, that side is not as sharp and
will not cut as well. Then you have a chain that will not cut straight.
Well... in my experience, both sides are equally sharp, the burr... if any... is not an issue.
Also, this would not effect if it cuts straight, that would be more of a raker or user issue.

Either... you have great reviews on all the different options. I was leaning toward the 620. Just wanted your opinion on, if you could have one for the bench and one for the field, which ones you would prefer.
If you do a lot of chains, the 620 is great for the bench. Otherwise a chain vise and a Stihl 2-n-1 or Granberg would be fine... if you’re not just doing free hand.
For in the field... I always take extra chains and just swap out as needed.... but I will have a proper round file and flat file with depth gauge in case I need it. That’s another great use for the 2-n-1.... as long as you set your tooth angles standard. If you’re doing some custom angle, then free hand or Granberg.

Unfortunately, the Oregon grinders do not have that option.
I haven’t really seen an issue with burrs. I take light passes, do that helps.
The burr will come off first cut with the blade.
What’s your opinion on the holding power of the hydraulic clamp? Better hold than a manual clamp? Thanks.
I’ve never used a manual one, but the hydraulic is great! I’ve never had an issue with it. Holds very tight as long as you select the correct chain gauge.
Sorry for the stupid question but I’m new to grinding and just bought this grinder and getting it set up. How to you know which setting to set on the chain clamp?

Depending what brand of chains you run, the manufacturer will have suggested angles for that specific chain. But a general rule is 25-30 degrees. Unless you’re killing, then it’s 10 degrees.

I'm now on my second 610 230. The second got sent back today for inspection only having ground 1 chain. Both leaking oil from the top of the ram. Have you heard of this problem before?

Yeah, I do the rakers by hand. You can do them with this machine, but the set up seemed difficult and clumsy. It’s super quick and easy to file them by hand once I mount the chain on the saw.
As for square grind, unfortunately this machine can not do that.

Great video , Iv'e got the 410-120 setting in my amazon cart right now just checking out all the Oregon grinder video's i can before pulling the trigger on it. All of their grinder's seem to look like their all built about the same quality with the addition of some extra bell's an whistle's. I think for what i need the 410-120 will be ok. Yeah i fall into the group of people that had my chains wrecked by a shop that didn't know what they were doin with a grinder 20 years ago and been hand filling ever since. Anybody got any pros or cons on the 410 ? Thank's
I think the only difference is the vise.
Make sure it is set up properly, and go slow. Unless you plan to replace the grinding wheel with a CBN, just do light taps and keep the pink stone clean.

Unfortunately, you can not do square grind with this type of grinder.
I had a Silvey Razor Sharp that I did square on.

I tried every adjustment I could, if it can be done, I never figured it. It would be interesting to see....
what happens when u heat the chain up too hot?
Good question.
If it gets hot enough to discolor the steel, not just burning off pitch or oil, but if you blue the tooth.. it changes the temper in the steel. It won’t hold an edge as good or at all.
Good afternoon, I live in Brazil, I imported a current sharpener oregon 620-120, but after I sharpen a current it heats up a lot, my network is 220v and I use a transformer for 110v, so can that be why it gets so hot?
Does yours after sharpening a chain get hot too?
No, mine stays cool. I am on 110. Not sure how or if a transformer would effect the motor.

TWO COMMENTS,, ,Do the rakers with a 3/8 wheel at 10*,,, and don't run the grinder in the cold, this ran out the oil in the motor bearings , and caused a burr at the chizel on the exact machine you have. FYI

Great video, great explanation, but the grinder itself is vert poor quality it is NOT even close to professional grinder, also the grinding wheel has no reverse, angle adjustments are very crude and approximate. I am sure it beats the file, but it ends there. Thanks again for the video.

Are you redressing the wheel? I check the wheel every chain, and usually redress every 2nd or 3rd chain. Of course now I have a CBN wheel, so I don't need to reshape the wheel anymore. Yay!
