    Something tells me radiant citadel can be twisted into a pretty interesting dystopia. I'm thinking a vibe where the citizens are in a consistent state of dread of their councilors, shield bearers are generally low in morale, and the mind destroying magic is portrayed as some Psycho Pass-esque deal with fatal blind spots. I think that'd be a fun scenario to wrap the players up in. At least that'd be more interesting than any of the adventures in the book.

      It would be a test of how quickly, one or more of the following...
      1) The channel was false-flagged and / or taken down...
      2) The participants doxxed...
      3) The participants swatted...

    From the Polygon article: "The starting adventure, “Salted Legacy,” has players trying to stop a feud between merchants in a Thai-inspired night market, which requires earning renown by participating in a hot pepper-eating contest and a cooking challenge."
    What?? How is a hot pepper eating contest and cooking challenge in a Thai-inspired night market NOT a trope? Really??? Like, that's what they came up with for making a Thai-inspired adventure? FOOD?!?!? They couldn't use any of the awesome Thai folklore or mythology? Nothing with ghosts or spirits?

      @@TiaraStarbrighter Yeah. I guess I don't so much have a problem with them creating something that is different from Euro-centric culture. It's just that they could have drawn deeper into the respective folklore and mythology of each of the cultures a bit more and created more heroic storylines, instead of the trendy "let's role play what we like to do in real life" vibes that the newer people seem to like. I think role playing games should involve exploration, mystery, adventure, heroes, villains, drama, and even horror. But...cooking contests? Proms? No thanks.

    • @Ryo_Hakuron
      @Ryo_Hakuron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BillAllanWorld There's only so much you can do in a short level 1 adventure. And the book contains a gazetteer for each setting with additional plot hooks and DM inspirations for each setting that draws on the culture and folklore.
      The beauty of an anthology it it's multiple small adventures for you to plug-and-play, so if you don't want to run a silly level 1 adventure with minimal-combat solving a mystery in a night market, then play one of the others. The very next adventure in the book in a horror plot. One of the later adventures involves you trying to stop an erupting volcano. Another's a dungeon crawl. Another involves you picking a side in a revolution and fighting against or alongside angels in the desert.
      Also, for the record, the "cooking competition" involves the party doing combat with giant prawns. It's not just a cooking competition.

      It is odd. That being said, I know they had a lot of peer-review sessions, and effectively all worked on all of the adventures together. Coulda also just been a line count thing so they couldn't space it nicely within the page limit. The gazetteers really fill up a lot of the book. There are other games and other game companies, and I have enough rpgs on my bookshelf to never have to spend another dime again (except on minis and paints, of course- and then there is 3D printing).
      The problem is not the games, but the gamers. When they call even writing your own adventures or choosing which rules to use v. RAW a "homebrew" you know you're in trouble. It's this kind of lack of independent thinking that fosters dependence on companies like Wizards of the Woke.

      I'd add Kara Tur/OA, Al Qadim, Maztica, parts of Ravenloft & Faerun etc..., aka the shit that the woke bash all the time. Which not to say some of Radiant Citadel's doesn't have some good some good subsettings, it's just that none of them really get the kind of proper space and development they deserved. For example I like that Godsbreath avoids the temptation to be victim porn for the pleasure of white woke liberals and instead focuses on how wonderful Southern culture is by making a fantasy version.
      Like usual WotC tries to do too many different competing things in one book with not enough space. It's hard to do a bunch of new settings just with such limited room for setting development. These subsettings don't even have prior editions. RC likely will be a fire and forget it setting like Ghostwalk that has no long term effects on D&D going forward with the possible exception of the occasional mention of the RC itself, but it's connected civilizations will likely be ignored outside of unofficial dmsguild products. This will be an orphaned product.

You can read the blurbs for Curse of Strahd or Shadow of the Dragon Queen and get a pretty good idea of what they will be about. It might or might not be something you are interested in but at least you will have a good idea of what it is. After reading the blurb for Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel, I have no idea what it is supposed to be. There's a magic city? You do...things? Stuff? Multiverse something something? I hail from Wisconsin, Green Bay Wisconsin actually. I am half Native American and half Mexican. I was adopted by my aunt and uncle as a baby. My uncle's Native American and his wife is of German and Norwegian ancestry. Why am I saying this? Because I'm a gamer. I've been playing role-playing games since 1987. All my friends growing up were white. 98% of my friends right now are white. I got into Dungeons & Dragons with my white cousins when I was a kid. I am a minority. Oh and I'm heterosexual.
    I'm not just into Dungeons & Dragons I like other role-playing games too.
    When I read that there was a creative team comprised of only people of color, I was really skeptical. Plus as we all know there's been plenty of garbage being cranked out by WOTC for some years now. Then I read it was going to have like all of the "Woke" themes splattered everywhere. I didn't even have a high hopes about the book. Everything that wizards makes is crap now. I did like Tasha's, don't get me wrong. Do I agree with everything that was in it? No. But it doesn't matter I like new spells and class subclasses and all that other junk.
    The point of my tangent is:
    Just because you're a non-person of color transgender lesbian homosexual being doesn't make you a good writer. It just makes you a being. I don't think race or fucking sexual orientation or politics for that matter should factor into gaming. Good writing is good writing. And shit writing is shit writing. It's a goddamn shame what has befallen our beautiful game of Dungeons & Dragons. Regardless of any politics, Dungeons and Dragons used to be beautiful and amazing and epic. Like I said I've been gaming since 1987. I've watched it rise and then turn into what we're all dealing with at the present...

    Would be kind of interesting to have a version of this book but written by someone who understands what living in east Berlin was like.
    A set of segregated planes that are all shithole communist controlled but also described with positive spin and newspeak to obfuscate that there are other planes/realities that are not shitholes. There could be little mini adventures, but the larger meta adventure is for the players to slowly discover that things are being hidden from them and the true end goal is to sucessfully flee the communist citadel to one of the free planes of existance. :)

    • @Ryo_Hakuron
      @Ryo_Hakuron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No where in the adventures are the pcs charged taxes. In the short citadel setting chapter, it's mentioned in a blurb about the economy and that there's a fee to get into the citadel like with Candlekeep and its book fee, but it's donation based and mostly for wealthy merchants.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The fee is what you call a Poll Tax. Or are you saying that you support a society where there's no wealth tax on adventurers? Why not them? Is it because they earned it and took risks that others wouldn't in order to get their fortunes? Because if that's your argument...

    • @Ryo_Hakuron
      @Ryo_Hakuron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RPGPundit No, my argument is you can handwaive the taxes if you don't want to use it. Just like you can handwaive the book donation for Candlekeep or guild fees in Waterdeep. It's your table, and you don't have to charge your players for shit if you don't want to. Gold in 5e is irrelevant anyway because Wizard spellbooks are the only real gold sink.
      I think you're being disingenuous and hyper fixating on a small detail (The sheer idea of taxes being mentioned in a section about a city's economy. Something that has been mentioned in plenty of other city settings.) in a setting that doesn't actually affect any of the adventures in the book because they don't even take place in the Citadel.
      I also think you're assuming things about me as a person because I said the make believe taxes in this make believe game don't even have to apply to the players, as it says in the book, and you can handwaive them because taxes might not be important to your campaign or particularly fun or interesting. (They certainly aren't important to the adventures in the book.)

    Reminds me of my sister, such a normie, she has played D&D several times, but she is not passionate and invested in it, she doesn't read the gamebooks, sourcebooks, etcetera. All of it is just for the fun of it. Exactly like the new D&D movie, normies like her will say 'It looks fun, really good special effects and handsome familiar actors'. So superficial roleplayers and uninitiated normies will flock and attempt to invade our spaces and demand that our games be modified to suit them, these arrogant superficial dilettantes.
    I really abhor these chaotic Leftists. Infuriating.
