Hi Sara, that is very interesting to see you setting them in individual paper pots and I can see that it would work, although I have never heard of this way before. I would do similar to Catherine, particularly with first and second early Varieties. It is not so important with Maincrop varieties, although as a force of habit I chit them too. I am growing Lady Christl and Red Duke of York for my earlies and Setanta and King Edwards for my Maincrop. Here in Ireland we are very fond of our potatoes and a number of organisations have been involved in the breeding of varieties in recent years such as Rooster, Setanta, Cara and Navan, to name a few including the Agricultural Board Teagasc. What varieties are you growing? Happy growing. Sean
Good morning Sara, I have never seen anyone do this with their potatoes. Are you chitting them like this? I look forward to an update. Have a great today! Catherine
I am not sure what chitting is and I can't seem to find a translation. I put them on compost so that they can develop roots. That gives me about four weeks earlier harvest. Perfect!
Sara, I am so pleased I can share something with you! So many people will place their potatoes out, usually in an egg box, so that the "eyes" can grow. They call that "chitting". Then they will plant their potatoes. The way you have done it, I have never seen and thought perhaps it was for the same reason. Do you just place the potato on top of the soil and it will sprout roots? I love the sharing and learning we can all do through our videos. Have a great today! Catherine
