Great work, Paul. This work is so excellent. These paintings are so over the top. Great critique, Mark. It is so good that you are sharing the work of others.
These are THE BEST I've ever seen. This is my friend Paul and he is one fantastic artist!!! I'm so glad everyone has got the chance to see what he does. It continually inspires me to push on and do my best. Congratulations Paul!!! What an accomplishment!!
I liked the debate on the question what defines an artist because it is the discussion that I always have with myself in which there are always two different criteria: I am an artist because I execute a work well, because I am virtuous by copying something? or: I'm not because I'm not creative ?. My answer was when I made a compilation with the music. A violinist of a company performs perfectly and with great virtuosity the composition of another musician, then ... do we stop calling him a musician because he does not compose or because he is executing the work of another? I agree with you Mark. An artist is who makes works of art. Thanks a lot and congratulatoins to both. Beautiful work Paul. Greettings!!
The second painting is an abstract masterpiece. The Andrew Wyeth comment is perfect. A friend from my days at art school paints scenes like this and his works are intimate and precise.
Art - An emotional representation of a scene in any medium. This painting certainly evokes an emotional response from me so it is art.... and I would hang it on a wall and be happy looking at it.
Well, you have a high sensitivity to the beauty and the mystery of creating things. You seating there for hours tweaking shapes and colors. That’s nothing but art. You are a great artist. I really enjoyed your paintings. Keep the good job up and don’t forget to invite me to your first show.
I love the time limit idea. For me the stages of progress can go to far. I've ruined paintings by doing too much. I love the raw style of painting- but with great realism. Thank you for sharing. I got so much great stuff from this video.
You are an artist, don't be silly. Your work is beautiful, don't you see it? That's it, there's nothing else. Put your feelings in your mind, that's the magic wand.
Beautiful work! Wow Paul. Thanks for bringing him to is Mark. Paul - can you let us know when you have a show? I'm just starting but i could be your photo twin (although that's being generous to myself, lol) - i too have grandfather memories of love to paint, from old faded photos. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. My wife is gonna go nuts of pile up 30 paintings, but here goes...
I agree with Mark that in the end an Artist is someone who creates artwork, provided that it's an original piece via style, or composition, or concept. Etc.
Great work, Paul! Especially drawn to your water can painting for subtle colour choices, implied surface textures and the compelling circular composition that keeps the eye moving successfully around the image. Excellent!!! Great series, Mark!
I really enjoyed this critique. Paul I love the paintings especially the first two. They represent a part of your life. Fantastic work! Congratulations!
You two talking about being frauds and thinking your work is crap and that you're impostors is seriously the most encouraging thing I have heard in ages.
Amazing work. Congratulations both. Teacher and student. The conversation about being an artist made me think a lot. Criticism is easy for everyone to make, but it can be very destructive and our unconscious mind can trick us and make us think we don't deserve a place in any museum or gallery. Again, great work and thanks for sharing!
There are many different styles of art and realism is one. You are differently an artist. It is awesome that now you have mastered color, composition and other skills and that you are now ready to try different styles. That really is what DMP is all about. It gives you the knowledge and confidence to use the same ingredients and skills in a different way. If a person learns to cook or bake and they learn what flavors compliment each other and how to use spices and such and one day they just say hey i think i'll try this or that. No one would say they were not a cook before because they used a recipe. I can't wait to see your progress in what ever styles you choose. There is nothing new under the sun but the expressions of those things through painting is a joy to see and do. Keep up the good work and enjoy the process as much as we enjoy looking at your work.
I love this, I just had a vision, or idea to create a painting, using my memory of construction, my workshop, etc and here I'm seeing someone who has already done it 😊
I agree with Mark, Paul’s mastered the technical concepts, and now his next step in learning is to do quicker paintings of real scenes from life, and hone that aspect of his skills, which I’m sure would come with more learning. But that seems like the logical progression and end game. But it seems Paul is content to produce technically excellent copies of photographs. There are some deep philosophical waters in the conversation. For me the goal would be to get as good as I could, that I could set myself up in the park and capture scenes with great depth and accuracy. That would be the ultimate challenge.
I disagree, I am not content to reproduce photographs. I have a highly respected coach who is now leading me through exercises and challenges designed to push it all to the next level. Should be a fun ride.
Amazing artwork from an ARTIST!! I love that you are trying to be down to earth and modest, but your artwork is great! I hope that my ventures in painting can just get me close in comparison to what you are able to create!
The water well pump is beautiful. He mentioned cropping the wall out, but I think it would have been a good idea to paint the wall space . There is something about the air space with the subject mater to the side. It would have gave it more mystery ,and room for the viewer to find a resting place-maybe? Just my thought, and feelings.
I loved this video @DrawMixPaint. Many artists have physical challenges, orthopedic, etc. 5 compromised discs, rotator cuff, two torn knees and stress fractured feet. I used to train big dogs and snowski. Anyway, I have tendency to get lost in the work, not feeling pain for 8-10 hours. Then, I get up and about and have to rest a day or more between sessions. You are so honest and diplomatic with critique. Mentioned your pulley system for shoulder... How about a basic self-care video about not getting lost in your painting+ tips to stay healthy? I know past experiences have ruined paintings by getting so lost in the therapeutic effects of soothing oil painting. *Commenting on video with student who had been down for 20 yrs.
All these artists are great! A step above a photo is wonderful compliment. I like dark too. Yes dark values are more difficult and I’m in the middle of doing a lot f it. Only a student of TH-cam aand forever a student probably. I know what I want at least....practice practice practice. The bird box looks like a bat box....they set 18 feet high though. Great for mosquito country
Put simply, if you create art regularly, you're an artist, the difference being you can be a good one or bad one (which is personal and subjective). Artists who only copies what he/she sees can be in high demand especially as a portrait artist, I personally am not a fan of super realism, but that's only my taste.
Amazing! Have you ever tried painting from what your heart is full of? you dont need to look at a pic or sit outside, you just Let your imagination take you to the place that makes you smile and paint it! ..you will be surprised!
I think he was just trying to say hes not interested in being a creative, he’s interested in technical skill, he doesnt want to pursue art for the sake of art, hes persuing refinement of skill in replication. Both are arts, but hes not the creative artist that works in messages and meaning into their work, he paints exactly what he sees to the best of his abilities on an entirely skill based merit. Thats what i took from what he said about not being an artist at least.
Actually, what I meant was that I don't feel I'm there yet. All I've conquered is the ability to copy photographs, which can be done with simple procedural steps. I'm working on the more creative aspects now, and once achieved, I'll consider myself creative.
That visual line from the light of the window and along those boards streaming onto the workbench is genius. It invites the viewer into the painting, it provides other points of interest to move the eye around and it looks completely uncontrived. It's very good.
Hi Mark, Have you considered providing a booklet of reference photos for aspiring artists? I know that I for one would definitely appreciate such a resource. Thanks.
Picasso and Dali both learned to do high realism before branching out into more creative and abstract compositions. They could also draw beautifully. I might be able to be a great technician or craftsman, and maybe less gifted or talented in the creative or imaginative aspect. But it’s all art. Nobody can teach you how to be Dali or Picasso, but if they could they would begin with Draw Mix Paint.
Great video Mark and beautiful paintings Paul. Mark do you ever use linear polarizing filters on your camera to get rid of glare while filming? I just found out you can use those filters to get ride of glare.
@@pbeckingham Thanks for the reply. I went to Staples and they wouldn't let me edit/crop anything myself (as I'm used to doing it at CVS). Said they had to do it. I'll give it another shot. Keep up the great work!
