    My fountain pen jones began with my purchase of a black Pilot E95s with a fine nib. My wife received her ivory/burgundy version about a month later as a Valentine’s Day gift. I gifted my son’s girlfriend with mine at Christmas last year. I find myself sneaking my wife’s to use from time-to-time despite owning a half-dozen other pens. It it is an overlooked giant.

    I would also love to use a red-based ink to match the burgundy, but in my culture, it is not appropriate to write with red ink, especially names. Writing someone’s name in red means the person is dead.

      Thanks for letting me know about this. Maybe it’s safer to stay in the reddish browns? Thanks very much for watching.

    I have said it before and I’ll say it again: the Pilot E95s is just seemingly unbeatable on looks, style, price, value and performance among all its gold nibbed peers - whether Pilot or any other brand.
    I have both the burgundy and the black pens (both M nibs). Just wish a broad and italic AND other colors were available. I reckon I’d have bought two more, then. 🙂
    As for being under-rated, I’ve heard of nobody who owns one rate the pens anything less than stellar. Of course, many people probably buy the slightly pricier Custom 74 instead. I’d take the E95s every time even if it cost the same as the C74.
    Hemingway, you’d do well to explore similarly styled (vintage) pocket pens from Sailor and Platinum. I wish to get a vintage Pilot Elite someday.

    I agree with everything you said about the marvelous e95s. One downside you didn't mention is that the converter ink chamber is completely obscured by the threaded portion of the section in use. I've taken to using syringe refilled cartridges so I can see my ink level

    Good morning from Brisbane - I purchased the e95 S recently . It being unobtrusive Ive been using it at the Bridge Club for recording scores : it doesn’t attract the vulgar attention of my 149 . As you say , the Elite is quietly understated & almost too delicate to the touch . I enjoyed the Beethoven . I never thought i would like this fountain pen until i tried this and instantly purchased one. I have a black one with a medium nib. This pen is one of the best fountain pens by pilot and certainly an understand pen. I am planning to buy one more soon thats how much i like it now.

  • @radiofreealbemuth
    @radiofreealbemuth ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I just got this pen in Medium, and it has some hard starting issues. The first stroke after I uncap the pen always seems to skip. It also seems like I need to apply a moderate amount of pressure for the ink to lay down a saturated line width that I prefer. It also doesn't put down ink by its own weight, when I rest it on my palm and drag the nib across the paper. Is this normal with the Pilot e95s? Or should I return it? I'm wondering if this is a bug or a feature, because I notice the e95s has line variation that's sensitive to the amount of pressure you apply. It's a flexy nib that's different from any other Pilots I own (Kakuno, Explorer, Prera, 743 Medium).

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard starting.. So sorry! I am sure you did the thorough clean and all that. Plus, try Kon-Peki ink or similar. Otherwise, it is an issue. It should be very wet and flowing. Pilot nibs are much more generous with ink in medium widths. Try a thorough clean and go from there. Sorry for this issue.

    • @radiofreealbemuth
      @radiofreealbemuth ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @HemingwayJones ah, I see, yes, I started out with the Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji, then I cleaned it and tried Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo. I also have Kon-peki, but i think it'll have the same result. If it's supposed to lay down ink effortlessly, then I will return it. I wasn't sure if this might be one of those pens that require "moderate pressure." Apparently Pilot 92 requires "moderate pressure" for it to write without skipping, according to Jet Pens in their description. Puttering Penman says that's what he doesn't like about it.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@radiofreealbemuth Yama Budo & Kon Peki are essentially the same, so it isn't that. Cleaning has resolved many issues for me, in very old and very new pens; when something is clogging up the works.
      I wouldn't like moderate pressure either. That is not the case with mine. I never apply pressure. So sorry.

    Another pen that you’ve drilled into my head. My first elite 95 came in today and I couldn’t be more dazzled by it. It may be my lightest and quickest writer. So much so that I had to try to get my handwriting back under control, as it was getting away from me. It’s a hell of a nice pen with a gold nib for just over $100. It also worked like a dream, strait out of the box.

    I think this pen has everything you need to take with you wherever you go. I do use it with ink cartridges, because I don't have the converter.
    I was able to buy this pen from someone who owns a fountain pen shop. And this person brought this pen with him on his trip to Japan, it was unused and brand new in the original Japanese packaging.

    I have the Elite (same pen, different market), the burgundy & champagne with a medium nib. I had been longing for it for years, even while getting far more expensive piston fillers, for the inking system. Maybe that's part of the underrating: if we're already into fountain pens before we discover this pen, it can wait for other, more exciting options. Then, when we get the Elite/E95s, the quiet elegance wins our hearts. I carry mine at work often, where people notice it more for its beauty than for the peculiarity of using a fountain pen. I may say that the nib writes beautifully. I have encountered no posting issues, although, yes, I do make certain the clip and nib are aligned.

      @@garykarlin1777 It’s amazing how nibs run off even in large brands. Part of the fun of the hobby, I suppose. I hope you like it that way. All the best.

    How is this against the 823?

      Wow, that deserves a video. Completely different. Soft long nib on the E95S, thinner, longer. 823 has the Vac fill and an exquisite nib. 823 is almost flawless. E95S is its own thing.

    Is the pen durable.

      It’s more elegant than durable. I don’t worry about it but it’s not a Safari or Kaweco Brass! I wouldn’t toss it in a bag or allow it to get crushed. Thanks!

    I had one of these for years but erroneously concluded it was too small for my large hands. It stayed in the family (gifted to my eldest daughter who has tiny hands!) but over time, I got to missing it and thought I was too hasty. She graciously allowed me to borrow it for a bit and upon re-use I wondered why I thought it was too small! I did return it to her ...and promptly bought another for my use! It stands unique in my collection as the only pen I bought twice!

      I love this pen. it is very light. it’s built well and has an excellent nib. It is very sleek. The nib is outstanding. I would go try it somewhere first and make sure it is your thing. I love mine.

    These are $78-$85 from Japan. No need to spend $130 on one. And not sure why you had to wait for so long to get your color way of choice, probably retailer specific, but you can get one shipped from Japan and delivered in a week or two tops.
    I just got a black/gold one off of Amazon from a Japanese seller. It was $75 and arrived in less that a week. Great pen, but I feel like I should have gone with the EF or F nib. With how light and portable the pen is, it really feels more suited to the finers nib options.

      Hi Matt, At the time it was sold out in that color everywhere here in the US. I generally do not buy pens from Amazon. I have had issues! I even gave up my "influencer" page I had on there. I would definitely buy straight from a Japanese company. Thanks for the tip! This is very fine. You know Pilot! Thanks for the great information and all the best.

      @@HemingwayJones Ah that makes sense! I usually prefer to buy locally if I can, but Pilot’s pricing is so crazy in North America vs. Japan. It can sometimes be $100+ price difference for the exact same pen! I’ll usually take a chance with Japanese Sellers if Amazon is the shipper, makes returns super easy if there is a problem. I haven’t had any issues yet, but I have heard some horror stories. Thanks for the content, really enjoyed watching this one!

      I’ve bought almost all my Japanese pens (save two) directly from Japan. Here in the U.S. the excessive mark-up in pricing is just a total turn-off.
