I've had very easy kills where I went to loot the guy and saw a terminus handcannon with penny shot. Dude was expecting to pretty much have the shotgun inside my mouth if he wanted to kill with that
I do think there's something to be said for pennyshot with the fast firing shotguns, the crown&king and the terminus with levering. The extra fire rate negates the downsides somewhat and synergises with the extra ammo. I do hope pennyshot gets a buff because I think it's a very on theme ammo type, and one of the most unique in the game.
@@bigsmoke8816I agree, I think the very small chance of 1 or 2 shooting where you otherwise wouldn't isn't enough, i'd only use penny shot on Romero for bosses and since now you still pick up the same amount of buckshot you just start with a little less
If your going to buy a crown and king you might as well buy better ammo then penny shot. The amount of times I've killed someone who had a penny shot crown and king with a Nagant and fanning is way higher then the amount of times I've won against a crown and king with slugs or buckshot.
Great video, thanks! (Love the intro btw; hope it stays tbh) A couple of ideas for your Myth Busters or other type of videos that I'd love to learn more about: - fanning and levering spread (which guns are most consistent) - bullet velocity analysis. Like how fast is fast enough to not really need to worry about leading shots at different ranges.
The bullet velocity thing could be it's own video. Having so many different weapons and the existence of Spitzer, fmj and high velocity ammo creates so many possibilities
I love your videos man. I'd love to see a flechette video in the future. I'm a huge fan of it personally, I just never know if it's more beneficial to bring a large rifle and a flechette 2-slot shotgun or a large flechette shotgun and a 2-slot rifle on my quartermaster builds. And I'm curious about the effective ranges and spread and the level of bleed each shotgun induces.
dismissing the additional damage at close range for pennyshot is a little hasty i think, like you said its easier to kill in very tight situations and those are the situations where a romero buckshot often hits limbs or generally just graze erratically moving enemy hunters. There is a noticeable layer of reliability for finishing off guys that are in that "just slightly to far to melee" range which tends to be really common inside buildings depending on playstyle.
coming back to this comment because penny shot is great in bounty clash. Reliable indoors and getting noticeably more single shot kills. No one is talking about this.
So playing 20 different games with the crown with pennies, getting no hit markers within 5m, crazy headshots, and a 1 tap from 16m all head. I can honestly say that penny shot is the most RNG thing I’ve had the misfortune of relying on.
I believe giving feedback on the game via content creation like this is the best way to be heard and seen by Crytek and subequently have the game improved. Just.. maybe antagonising the Devs aint a great idea. Very interesting video, cant wait for more!
Having done something similar on my own I can say you were spot on with all the information here. The only thing I can add is that the rival handcannon spread for both buckshot and penny is suspiciously different when put into practice. Penny has a much more consistent spread and performs better on the hand cannon despite all logic.
Great to see someone providing so much input and informing everyone. Your video about slugs also got me thinking how much of a dumbo I was for using slugs on Romero. All those so-called loadout meta experts with 4 stars and big mouth should watch your vids and learn.

The reason people call Pennyshot Terminus "OP" is probably because they use it in conjunction with levering, which doesn't let you aim properly if you just keep the button pressed down, hence the pennyshot somewhat reduces the effects of this bad aim.
Well specifically terminus spamming with levering is a totally different play style than the other shotguns one could argue. And using a wider spread there while running and gunning not trying to get one taps, I can see how penny gets some value.
Pennyshot on the Drilling is by far the most one-tap consistent (at the expected range) version of any shotgun I've used in 1.5k hours. Whether this is bugged or not, it feels even more reliable (to me) than a Romero. EDIT: This must've been bugged because after the hotfix, pennyshot is now laughably shit. I've had instances in the shooting range where at 12m, none of the pellets hit the target. Previously, that dummy would have been dead 10/10 times.
Im glad you touched on it- I love to take 2 Romeros into the bayou, one with pennyshot/slug and another with two stacks of slugs. You get a massive amount of slugs, and the single stack of pennyshot is more than enough to take care of bosses and mobs.
nice to finally see a in depth video about pennyshot! as someone who is maining pennyshot shotguns and probably has about 1000 kills with pennyshot alone i am preaching in favor of pennyshot for PVP for over a year now as people just look at the stats and get confused and/or jump to conclusions based on limited data/experience. most comparisons of shotgun ammo types are based on the assumption of perfect aim which is a bad way to compare ammo types and i am glad you didn't fall into that. it is safe to assume that not even the best players aim is perfect and aiming is way harder at extremely close range against moving targets. that's why i like pennyshot so much as it has a much higher tolerance for badly aimed shots and limb hits at close range. and bad aim can easily happen when you get surprised with a chaotic situation at close range. rival, terminus with levering and crown are the best shotguns to use pennies on as volume of fire reduces the main drawback that it is not very consistent at its max effective range. another mistake many players who are inexperienced with pennyshot make is shooting from a much to high range when using a fast firing pistol would be much more effective. pennyshot is a beast at PVP in very close range and kills very consistently but its power doesn't scale as well with the players aim as other shotgun ammo types. it is way more viable for PVP than most players think but to get good with it they have to learn the ranges where it excels.
That last point about very close ranges giving penny shot an RNG-based edge is important. It's possible that buckshot mostly fired under someone's armpit at close range, would turn into a kill with penny shot. However, once you get fairly consistent with aiming at center of mass or fairly near it, it's definitely better to have buckshot almost all of the time.
Even if you had a god awful aim, I think you're better off relying on being lucky enough to shoot correctly than relying on penny shot working. Penny shot only exists to be had as a secondary ammo on a romero handcannon if you want to kill a boss more easily
I once missed nearly barel stuffing when using a romero hatchet with pennyshot. I was roughly 5 meters away, and was aiming at their back. (For more context, it was at the cathedral next to scuppers lake, i was on the small stairs to the crypt entrance and they were in the middle of the small opening). This issue made me swear off pennyshot except for challenges
i would love to see a video about the performance of arrows and bolts. the arrow/bolt drop with standard and custom ammo for the bow, crossbow and hand crossbow. would be really interesting to see how much lead is needed upwards and maybe even to the side for running hunters since they rarely stand still and arrows/bolts have such a slow velocity compared to bullets. really enjoy those videos, great work ^^
This is a wonderful video, thank you very much! I still love pennyshot for the sound and the gamble as I usually use it to “clean up” as my aim is trash anyway😅
It's good to finally know that shot I missed with penny shot at point blank range was in fact not a skill issue and was because of the worst ammo type in the game that I have an undying hatred for because all it does is make me LOSE.
I feel like it can be argued that the Rival and Terminus HC only really lose a meter or two of potential 1 shot range where their advantages are also the follow-up shot. Diminishing any major disadvantage had with pennyshot.
Amazing analysis and guide! i never knew penny was this rng based, ive almost always had good games with penny, but i might just keep using buckshot more often than not now
I think there is a use for pennyshot, and that is if you are spamming with terminus HC hipfire leverring. Because of the shotgun crosshair being more consistent with the actual spread when hipfiring, it makes this much easier and even more braindead then it already was. Granted, flechetes also kind of do this in the opposite way.
The main advantage of pennyshot in pvp is it's more forgiving. With buckshot, you actually have to be pretty accurate. If your crosshair isn't fully on center-mass of a target, you are unlikely to one shot them. With pennyshot though, you can be notably off target and still kill targets. I find pennyshot to be most beneficial on the terminus with levering and crown, as you're unlikely to be very accurate when spamming them.
How do flechette headshots work? Since they apparently can headshots, just like slugs, but are in fact multiple projectiles, then how many darts does it take to 1hk to the head? And how much more reliable is that over just shooting the torso? (also how effective is it in 1 hit killing to the head, compared to buckshot 1 hit killing to the torso?)
I like all the ammo types besides flachettes and slugs which i dont understand, but I'm the crazy guy with the romero alamo, so i don't try spamming that thing. Good info though, i think the only thing its missing is a person who relies on whatever ammo you are covering but doesnt spam it if thats your issue to run with you, as they may show some close quarters fight work that would add to the stats, as we all get used to different bullet types. I found with pennyshot close quarters even against a bomblance is possible, but only as for me the average buckshot may end up taking two shots, which the alamo would have trouble gettin to fast and youd be switching to your sidearm if they charge you. Food for thought, as close quarter fighting(within 8m) is always on the table for hunt
i like penny shots especially on terminus and Romero, just cuz for romero ill take one with slugs and pennies to have more ammo. terminus just for ammo and i end up pushing hard on it either way so if they dont die from my 13 meter shot ill eventually come closer. but if anything id go fletchets paired with a long ammo rifle so after i hit with rifle just fletchet them(plus on handcannons i notice fletchets actually do more damage than the buckshot where as full size it does less for somereason
Cant argue with tests. Thx for the work & the infos. Before I knew it was (almost) "strictly" worse in PvP I liked to play it in fast-firing shotguns (Terminus & Crown) because it worked similiar as a bomblance to quickly kill bosses and Meatheads (MHs need 3 shots to be killed, which cant be done quickly with Rival). Also faster fire-rate kinda lowers the unreliable factor. But I guess with these numbers and spreadsheets there is no justification anymore to use it in anything else but a Romero.
I had some good times with terminus penny shot, I could say OHK was pretty consistent although I did try to engage at a very close range, to me it felt more forgiving with the aim, also lucking out and killing a hunter at long range was pretty satisfying
Omg your videos are so helpful and accurate and funny. 10/10, I look forward to being the hipster that says I knew his channel before it blew up and got big
(I just joined your discord and I'm absolutely the type of sicko who enjoys helping collect weapon testing and data. I might have spent more time in the practice range than bounty hunt)
The drilling special ammo is generally a sore thing to point out, like the general double to triple penalty the rifle barrels get. But check out flechette on top of penny and buckshot. Flechette has higher spread and a bigger crosshair on the drilling than the other ammo options. Totally bugged thing.
Patch notes from the fix right after this video show that they "Fixed an issue that caused the Drilling base and Flechette shotgun spread to be incorrect". Hopefully they tightened the buckshot spread. Edit: It seems much tighter, just shot it in the range
Don't forget how bad the networking is in this game. I've been pretty far off shot, with only about 1/3 or my crosshair on the right arm and right chest, and got a oneshot kill with the specter, and in that same game, two other shots, my crosshair was right on center chest, and one shot was a ghost shot doing 0 damage, and the other did 27. I was using fletch rounds, but I've had similar experiences with buckshot, and all of these have been inside 10-12m. Hell tonight, I shot a guy in the back while ADSing with a scottfield from about 15m, and it did not hit. The guy was standing still and I was aiming between his shoulder blades.
There are only two reasons I ever take pennyshot, either split with romero to kill bosses. Or when I have weekly mission for pennyshot damage (even though I often prefer to skip these). Even if penny performed similarly to buckshot at range, the no penetration makes it very weak. Mind you not necessarily because you want to wall bang with it, but because when shooting indoors, it happens very often that the enemies are partially hidden behind some objects like railings, chairs, wooden crates or thin walls. Especially when peaking around corners, trough windows and such. Pennyshot makes all of these non kills, which is a huge disadvantage. I actually think pennyshot should make the shotgun cheaper compared to buckshot. 😀Even though you are literally shooting money. Excellent video btw.
Give us a video regarding hip-fire! I would like to know just how accurate a conversion pistol is when hipfired, cause I swear the springfield rifle (which has the lowest spread stat) hits DEAD ON all the time.

i would love to see a video about the performance of arrows and bolts. the arrow/bolt drop with standard and custom ammo for the bow, crossbow and hand crossbow. would be really interesting to see how much lead is needed upwards and maybe even to the side for running hunters since they rarely stand still and arrows/bolts have such a slow velocity compared to bullets. really enjoy those videos, great work ^^
This is a wonderful video, thank you very much!
Thank you very much, this is very useful now day.
Great video! Thanks for the help.
Analysis videos like this are fucking fantastic! keep up the good work!
amazing video! Thank you ❤
The main advantage of pennyshot in pvp is it's more forgiving.
Brilliant video mate. That one must have required a lot of work to put together.
i like penny shots especially on terminus and Romero, just cuz for romero ill take one with slugs and pennies to have more ammo. terminus just for ammo and i end up pushing hard on it either way so if they dont die from my 13 meter shot ill eventually come closer. but if anything id go fletchets paired with a long ammo rifle so after i hit with rifle just fletchet them(plus on handcannons i notice fletchets actually do more damage than the buckshot where as full size it does less for somereason
Looking at these stats and all this knowledge only frustrates me more when my shotgun hits for 15-20 point blank
Never stop what you are doing man. You are my type of guy.
(you and me both)
The drilling special ammo is generally a sore thing to point out, like the general double to triple penalty the rifle barrels get. But check out flechette on top of penny and buckshot. Flechette has higher spread and a bigger crosshair on the drilling than the other ammo options. Totally bugged thing.
Recent hotfix confirms your suspicion
GOATED video as always
Yea I would like to hear your opinion on the game right now. Also would love to see a breakdown of all explosive ammo types...
My friend is a Pennyshot stan, mislead by his bad aim, and i sent him this video. Thank you Cornf.
Thanks for making this, good to know. If you're interested, i'd like to see a video comparing greyhound and no greyhound.
I think we already have that
There are only two reasons I ever take pennyshot, either split with romero to kill bosses.
You can't stop me from using pennyshot, just like you can't stop me from huffing glue
Damn fine video and info. Have a comment to fight the algorithm
Love ur videos bro. Great job
Give us a video regarding hip-fire! I would like to know just how accurate a conversion pistol is when hipfired, cause I swear the springfield rifle (which has the lowest spread stat) hits DEAD ON all the time.
Holy shit you have a talent for explains things. Better then my profs 😭
Great videos, respect for all the work that went into it. it's a huge deal for the hunt community, your videos compress a lot of complex information & interdependency a sandbox game has in a fun & memorable way without being hypeyboy or toxic wiseguy. have a good one see y'all yonder colorado (unless my pc finally melts with 2.0... pray for me XD)
Thanks for your hard work.
Babe wake up, the hunt tech guy uploaded a new video!
Love the penny shot...in close ranges it helps me a lot as my aim is not the best.
