This movie is very raw, it's a must watch movie though, one of the best from bollywood

You know how Godfather is considered to be once in a lifetime movie. This movie is exactly the same. But you need a bit critical and wide perspective of international (Indian) cinema to appreciate it.
Its objectively one of the greatest movies ever made in bollywood. Anyone who has watched it can vouch for that.

There’s nothing beating GODFATHER in its style Italian mafias, in Indian mafia scenes, this movies is outstanding.

Arpit Gupta There can be no comparison drawn bw GOW & Goodfellas. This is on a different Tangent. This film shows the actual chaos, goofiness of criminals. It’s a masterpiece.

Movie starts in 1945 and Ends in the year 2007. It's a Gangster saga over generations. Both parts are violent and sometimes vulgar but it's movie making at it's best.
It starts in '41 and ends in '09.

This movie is a piece of art but then yes, strictly beyond kid's realm. Gangs of Wasseypur was exhibited as a single 5 hour movie in various film festivals but split into 2 parts for cinema viewers in India and abroad
It is actually a great movie . Has great sense of humor and funny moments also . Please do watch it .

Anurag Kashyap was a college student in Delhi, where he got a chance to attend the Delhi International Film Festival. He spent 2 or 3 days straight watching award winning films from all over the world. Several of the movies he watched were Scorsese films.
By the end of the festival he knew his future was in film making, so he went home and packed up a suitcase and got on a train for Mumbai that night. He is now one of the top Indian directors and people around the world are studying his films. Hollywood directors have lifted whole segments from this film and used them in their own films. See: Slumdog Millionaire.
This movie, Gangs of Wasseypur was my introduction to him, and it blew my mind. I had no idea then that they were making movies like this in India. It brought me back to watching Indian movies on a regular basis. This is a must watch for you guys. And yes, if it were an American film, it would have received a hard R rating. The movie will still be there waiting for younger viewers to reach an appropriate age.
As some have mentioned, there is a part 2 as well which is as good as, if not better than, the first part. Basically it is a super long film divided into 2 parts, kinda like the Godfather movies.
You'll want to set time aside for watching both parts.
Everything about this film is gritty. Even the music and songs. The music director traveled the country looking for traditional regional singers, and even street entertainers, and recorded them in their own environments using portable equipment, rather than dragging them off to the big city recording studios because the intimidation factor alone would have negatively altered the singing.

they are still there, the Singh mansion at Dhanbad is their headquarters. Ramadhir Singh shown in the movie is actually Suraj deo Singh, owner of singh mansion.They were the coal mafia.

It's a great movie. Actually part 1 and 2 combined was made as a single movie of 5 hours..... But they split it in 2 parts for commercial reasons.

I live in Jharkhand state and dhanbad is quite near to my city 3 hr away, jharkhand is rich in coal,iron resources and these kind of mafia is common in some specific places.its a really good movie.there are still some places in Jharkhand where no outsider are allowed,even police is scared to go in.but don't worry it's very safe for common people and tourists in the cities and also in outskirts where u can find lots of beautiful waterfalls.
Guys watch the making of the film it is pretty dope. How cheaply this movie was made and the story line itself is totally of a another level. How the shots where taken. As u guys talked about those explosions, how the director shot those scenes will amaze you guys.

5:14 Interesting you mention that coz Anurag Kashyup (The Director of this movie) loves Martin Scorsese's work. So much so that he shot a scene in the movie very similar to that in 'Goodfellas' as a homage.

The (true!) story is set in a coal-mining town, so the controlled explosions at the start. Yes, Martin Scorsese loved the movie and met the director Anurag Kashyap (who was in fact inspired by gangster movies like Good Fellas, etc)
This movie is one of the best movie to come out of India ... It is a genre in itself ... The birth of inheritance crime mafia ... You should see the movie ... I ain't kidding ... and above all the movie is inspired by true historical events and characters with a little bit of creative dramatic fantasy.
It's a Epic Gangsta Movie..
2nd part is the best, but obviously u can't understand the 2nd part if u don't watch the 1st part..
Do give it a watch if u want a vintage, old school, rural Gangsta action.. A lots of GunFights, Bombs, Killings, Revenge, Curse Words, with a Good Story and directed by an Excellent Director..

Hey i am from wasseypur where this incident happened . Its sad but todays wasseypur is not even close to old so thats good.

It's a true mafia story of wassyepur of 90's, situated near Dhanbad in the border of Bengal and Bihar.
This movie is a classic. It's like Quentin Tarantino unleashed and OD'd on more Quentin Tarantino.

this is a place called washypur i belong nearby that place,so its a true story this film somehow portrayed in a realistic way not in cinematic way.... i jus like that.. today also in washypur these incidents took place. any time muder,place where even police get scared to enter.

So the controlled explosion is because Wasseypur is located in a city called Dhanbad (in state of Jharkhand) and Dhanbad is the coal capital of India with many open cast mines and other mineral excavation. I am from that city so I can vouch that the story in the movie is true and even today there are reminiscent of the Wasseypur gang but the power is shifted from Wasseypur gangs to Singh mansion gangs. So there you go!

The best way to watch Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2 is only Netflix. Both of them are put together as one big TV series of hour long episodes like game of thrones. The movies 1 and 2 are very long so if you watch it watch the Netflix cut!!
