Only when grow and, specially, since can start going to races, rallyes, etc, start to meet people alike, but before that i devore magazines, books and any information (remember, no internet) i can put my hands on. The main difference is today everybody wants to have 600hp Skyline and live frustrated, when any car can makes you happy while you have a bond with something real and yours.

Everywhere is harder to ger into cars. Card brands dont make fun and sporty cheap cars anymore so te old ones rise in price. I was saving for an mr-s when i was 18 (i had a 4k objective) then out of nowhere they boomed and now (6 yeats later) are arround 8-10k. I enden buying a honda CR-V rd1 to go to mountain and daily drive it and now im getting into bikes to have fun, they are cheaper. In the car culture you have to go with something different and risky, there is some cool cars that get forgoten and are in a good price still, like the mazda mx3 v6, i would really enjoy building one.

I really love the Honda culture tbh, out of every car and scene out there Hondas have always been more affordable where I live. After experiencing many cars the most fun I’ve ever had was building things that were dirt cheap and making them cool. Civics have risen dramatically in price but there are plenty of other Hondas still that are cheap, my daily is now a crv it’s and with a k24, good little bit of fun. But the car scene will always be evolving for different folks, even with electric cars you’ll see some cool things coming out in the future I’m sure.
Also his Honda and the tiny cool cars in Japan are instantly cooler and more unique than the hero cars of old imho, that’s how the Honda scene started in the first place, affordable cars with young guys just having fun
This series is fantastic. It's such a complex dynamic I wasn't aware of. As an American it's such a bitter sweet feeling. There's sadness from taking cars out of their home but it still feels new and exciting that they get a second life from people here who have wanted these cars for years.

One thing you're forgetting, Neil, is that WE live the Japanese car culture from the 90s and 2000s. The generation below us don't. They think we're dinosaurs because we need a 3.0 2JZ to make 1000hp. They're into newer cars. Unfortunately that new era of tuner cars is dominated by Euro Audi A3/Volkswagen Golf and the like, but Japan is still building highly tuneable cars like the 400z and MX5. Car culture will live on long after we're gone. Generations before us thought the scene was dying because their children didn't want a V8 anymore.....

Japan need to change the laws around people claiming abandoned cars. The amount of saut after cars that are left to rot in Japan is ridiculous and no one can do anything with them all because they don't have a stupid piece of paper.

I think car culture is dying everywhere, loved the japanese car scene in the early 2000’s up till recently. everything is crazy money now and the shows are full of people with bad taste that don’t have a clue. all doing it for instagram and want a 1000bhp car with pops and bangs.
You would think with the yen at 30+ year lows that cars would be a bit more affordable, but the importers are cleaning up. You can find videos of the car lots full of great cars for good affordable prices but you almost have to go there to get a decent price on one. Even beforwards prices never went down, a few months back you could get a nice cresta with less than 60,000k on it for less than $8k delivers to the port and now their $15k. The market is sucking the cars up as fast as they can ship them.
Here in the Philippines car culture is actually becoming more popular my friends who are not interested in cars 5 years ago are more interested in cars now one of my friend had an eg hatch with a side exit exhaust
Just a few years ago Filipinos were importing 90s cars from Japan and Europe until we had a law that only new cars could be imported The rwb guy even went to manila a few months ago so in a way Japan dose have a benifit to car culture in other countries
