  • In this video I change our ALKO caravan jockey wheel for "The Ultimate Caravan Jockey wheel" from Kartt. This is a instruction video, but for our full review of the new jockey wheel, our reasons for the swap and our thoughts - head on over to our blog post : the-trudgians.com/the-ultimat...
    The new jockey wheel is really simple to add onto our Bailey caravan, but other styles of A Frame may be slightly harder to swap over, so in this video I share some tips on how to remove and install a caravan jockey wheel.

    Our jockey wheel was old and needed replacing and after watching your video we ordered one of these and fitted this morning, very easy and straightforward literally 5 minutes and all done and very pleased with the results.

    Hi, I just happened to see this video as our jockey wheel really did need changing. I've purchased the Kartt one after seeing this video and have had our first trip out with it and it is brilliant, sturdy, solid and so much easier to use compared to our old one. Thanks for the vid, it was a big help in giving us confidence to take off our old jockey wheel and putting the new one on with no problems.

    Thanks Dan, very useful video. We haven’t been caravanning long enough for things such as hitching up to become routine, so last time we set off I/we accidentally left the jockey wheel down... We didn’t get far before we realised something wasn’t right! But though we’d travelled less than a mile (including up and over three speed bumps), when we stopped to figure out what was wrong the jockey wheel was looking a sorry sight. Good, then, to find your video and realise that replacing it would be pretty straight forward - less than a ten mi ute job in total which I did this afternoon. Won’t leave it down next time!

    Hi Dan this video has come just at the right time as I'm planning to change our jockey wheel, I've found that the stock jockey wheel digs in when manoeuvring around with the motor mover so I'm hoping a better quality one with a bigger wheel/tyre will do the job. I did wonder how it was fitted and your video has shown how straight forward it is to change.

I wanted to order through your affiliate link bit it would appear there's been an upgrade to the design....more a jockey shoe now! 😅 not sure that will last though. Look forward to you review of the Jockey Shoe. We were thinking of replacing our jockey wheel as the rubber had started to perish. I accelerated this by forgetting to raise the wheel when getting it out of storage. (I blame my wife as she checks my work before we move off). Anyway going along the road it disintegrated and after finding out the issue, I raised what was left. In fact there was no wheel at all.
    Got home and then had the nice task of turning the caravan around using the car (hardly done anything like this before as I have a motor mover). Got a new jockey wheel and popped it on in less than 5 minutes. Mine was on the side of the A frame.

    Hi Dan
    Hope you're feeling better.
    Thanks for sharing this, I've always wondered how to change the jockey wheel, especially on our van as it's practically in the middle of the A frame. I've considered changing it for the one with the built in noseweight gauge, but I'm not sure how accurate they are.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Justin, the noseweight gauge jockey wheels weigh the weight at the jockey wheel, not the nose. so you need to adjust the measurement and perform some maths to calculate teh actual weight on the hitch. (i hope that makes sense) to be completely honest with you - i'd stick to a calibrated nose-weight gauge like the Milenco one.

    • @stevechurchman1824
      @stevechurchman1824 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Milenco nose weight gauge and the Alko jockey wheel with the nose weight gauge. I use the Milenco gauge at home to check the weight. I then take a note of the weight on the jockey wheel and for the rest of the holiday I use that to get the correct nose weight.

    Dan I have recently towed my van for first time using the new detachable tow bar and I didn’t twig at the time but it was all painted black including the ball. My journey was very stressful as I had this grating sound coming from what I thought was the rear wheels stopping 3 times to check things out we finally made it to the caravan park a journey of about 70 miles. When detaching the van I then of course noticed that some of the paint 3 and 9 o’clock area was scuffed and back to bare metal. Realising that this probably had caused the grating noise I removed the rest of the paint on the ball using emery paper. Our returning journey was noise free. Dan should the paint have been removed in readiness to tow? This was a new Jaguar detachable tow bar fitted as an extra by the jaguar dealership on my f pace. The noise was scary. Thanks

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      mm, when you say the wheel is jammed, is that the jockey wheel itself? If the clamp is stuck - use plenty of WD-40 on it to try and penetrate the thread of the clamp bolt. if you try too much, you will face the danger of snapping it. If you can remove the plastic A frame cover, just enough to gain some space at the clamp - you could always try some heat from a blow tourch - but be careful. I would try the WD-40 first, maybe some light taps with a rubber mallet to shock it?

    • @miraji7492
      @miraji7492 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheTrudgians it was jammed at the handle which you turn to raise and lower it. Wouldn't budge. Tried loads of WD40, brute force, a good kick, eventually a sledge hammer. Still would not budge. I just replaced it in the end. Luckily managed to fit the whole jockey wheel and handle through the hole without having to cut it with an angle grinder so that was helpful!

    Why not just undo alko cla.p,remove jockey wheel assembly in one unit,replace and tighten clamp?

      I've found pneumatic jockey wheels just de-flate, puncture or rip off the rim with my motor mover. Been using plastic one but mine's cracked too. This looks like a better wheel I think I'll try one

      Morning Colin, The inflatable ones have a tendency to deflate and if we are away with a flat jockey wheel, it makes it almost impossible to move the caravan around.

      Hi Bob, i was always going to change this jockey wheel for something that had a rubber tyre, along the lines of what the Lunar had. i only noticed that this one was broken once i removed it from the van. so a warranty claim would only change it like for like.
      Hope that helps.

    Apparently, the jockey wheel is unavailable from Amazon.co.uk, so I cannot see the make and what makes it different. Instead, Amazon is offering a shoe! It is a very nice slip-on shoe, but just one shoe. I wish we could load images into the comments so you could see for yourself.

    Hello Mr Trudgian. Could you please do a video on the correct use and operation of a Jockey Wheel. Mine always looks like it's bending or bowing when I use the motor mover and I wondered if I was doing something wrong
    Also, the affiliate link is no longer available - could you recommend another replacement Jockey wheel please just in case I need to replace mine?

  • @forbiddenknowledge5722

    The one you took off is clearly a real budget one. Bit poor that you pay a considerable amount of money for a new van and they see fit to fit a cheap nasty jockey wheel.

      The process I demonstrate works with both styles of mounting. In fact, for my jockey wheel I didn’t need to show how they separate. Follow the process for your “inside” jockey wheel and you’ll be fine.
