x = 3 g^-1(x) - 3
x +3 = 3 g^-1(x)
x/3 + 3/3 = g^-1(x)
g^-1(x) = x/3 +1

If it’s f^2(x), it means ff(x), so unfortunately this method won’t work .
This method works when fg(x), which is a composite function and we are required to find either one of it.
In your case, ff(x) only consist of one function but repeat itself.

We can assume the f(x) is ax+ b.
f(x) = ax + b
ff(x) = a(fx) + b
ff(x) = a(ax+b) +b
ff(x) = (a^2)x + ab + b
Compare with question
ff(x) = 9x + 16
Coefficient of x is a^2 and 9
So a^2 = 9
a is +-3
The term without x is ab + b same as 16
So 3b + b is 16, b is 4.
If a is -3 then -2b is 16 and b is -8
So we have f(x) = 3x + 4
or f(x) = -3x - 8
