This is a lovely project Sandra - thank you. To keep small holes open I use short pieces of lead refill from a propelling pencil - you don't have to wrap them in kiln paper. To keep larger holes open I use short pieces of drawing chalk and again you don't have to wrap in kiln paper. With the chalk, the hole does end up a bit smaller as the chalk seems to shrink.

This looks fantastic, I love the addition of the stand for the fish to go on too.

Thank you so much 🌺 It’s one of my favorites so far, and the next one looks like it’s going to be another one of my favorites. It just came out of the kiln this morning after the first fuse, but now I have to wait for a few days before I can fuse again because of loadshedding. I hope to publish the video before the end of next week

You’ve taught me something. The term “load shedding”. I had never heard of that term before. Here in the US we don’t have to worry about that happening. We take it for granted that our electricity is always going to be there. Good for you to still be able to create such lovely pieces despite interruptions in your power source. If we are passionate about something we figure it out.

It wasn’t always like this, hopefully this can be fixed someday

You can shape a piece of chalk to fit in the hole…this will keep the hole open during full fuse. No fuse, just rub the chalk on a rough surface (sidewalk or sanding paper) to make a round dowel shape with flat bottom so it doesn’t fall over during firing. You can often reuse the chalk if you are careful when popping it of the fused glass hole. The glass won’t stick to the chalk so no need to wrap it with fibre paper.

I’ll help you. You’ve helped me. Drill your hole all to way through the wooden block. Cut a slice in the dowel half the depth of the base. Put glue all the way around the dowel. Insert into the block. Tap the dowel until it reaches all the way through. Now, take wooden tooth picks or wooden matches (use a razor and cut the match sticks into wedges. Add glue to them and tap them into the slice of the dowel. This will make the dowel very sturdy
