- Spectacular diving in the Mafia Island Marine Park in Tanzania. Mafia island is located in the Western Indian Ocean, south of Zanzibar and Pemba. Together with our excellent guide from Mafia Island Diving we had many exciting sightings, from the smallest critters to biggest fish in the ocean. We encountered over 50 different species of nudibranchs, marine flattworms and sap-sucking seaslugs.
Welcome to our dive trip safari to Tanzania to the Mafia Island National Marine Park in December 2021. We stayed two weeks at the beautiful Pole Pole Bungalows. We would like to thank our amazing dive guide and all the wonderful people from Mafia Island Diving for this outstanding diving experience.
For animal identification please refer to the video subtitle or to the species list below.
With best regards,
Sandra and Markus

Perfect. This is National Geographic quality
Excellent work !
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, so glad to hear that you enjoyed watching the video and that you notice the passion and effort we put into making these videos, thank you so much. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Ibrahim is a star now on you tube !
woww... this is faboulous... ❤❤ waiting for next video...
its really great content
Wow. Very beautiful
Dear Anitha, thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
SubhanAllah 🧡🧡
Back to the roots ;-) At first I wasn't quite sure if you deserved a thumbs up ... we have to work, air conditioning is broken, new heat records on the way and here comes a new video from you with dreamy vacation memories.
Fabulous pictures! Land, water - from tiny nudibranchs to the giant whale sharks, it's all there. My heart beats always for the very small water creatures, fantastic with what quality you have filmed them! It's so hard to find them in the first place, and then the problems of taking pictures - too much light or too little, focus needs a very (very!) steady hand, and don't you dare stir up some sand. My greatest respect for the magnificent work!
And as always, thank you for sharing your travel memories.
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment. So sorry to hear that your air conditioning is not working when you need it the most. So glad you like the video and that you share our love for tiny underwater critters. Mafia island is great. On one side of the island you have the marine park with amazing critters and on the other side are the whale sharks you can snorkle with. Really an amazing place to be. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
This is amazing! Thank you so much.
Looking to go there soon. Would you recommend Pole Pole for accommodation from your experience?
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad you enjoy watching our videos. We have been to Pole Pole three times and we love it. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel only a pleasure. Still in disbelief how good your footage is. If you don't mind would you be able to give me an indication of costs of accommodation at Pole Pole for 2 persons sharing and when that was? I've just reached out to Pole Pole directly, but. I'm not sure how quickly they will respond.
Thank you very much, happy you like our video. Unfortunately I dont have the prices for accomodation. We book everything with our traval agency and it is the full package with accomodation, diving and flights, no breackdown on accomodation only. But it is for sure one of the more expensive accomodation to stay as they only have 6 cottages. I am sure you will get your quotation and availability soon. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Fish soup let say :-)! Wonderful diving places! Did you have any encounters with other sharks?
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! Unfortunately sharks were hunted before the marine park was established, so no sharks in the area unfortunaltely. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel Hi Markus, can you recommend accommodation there and dive center please? Thanks a lot in advance.
Dear Richard, absolutely! As mentioned in the video description, we stayed in the Pole Pole Bungalows and dived with the Mafia Island Diving center, that is our prefered combination. As a budget alternative, you can stay in the Mafia Island Resort where the dive center is located, but we have not stayed there, so we cannot
give any comments on that resort). Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel thanks a lot Markus
incredible , what a lesson !, can you discribe your materiel ?
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it vey much! Our equipment is described in full detail in this video here: th-cam.com/video/r5dDOqveHZQ/w-d-xo.html
Since then we have added two GoPro Hero 7 Black for the wide angle and action shots to the list. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
exceptionnel ! un travail de professionnel ! Pouvez vous décrire votre materiel video ?
Dear Laurent, thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad you enjoy watching our video. Our underwater camera equipment is shown in full detail in our video here: th-cam.com/video/r5dDOqveHZQ/w-d-xo.html Since then we have added two GoPro Hero 7 black for the action and wideangle footage and we do not use the strobes for still photography anymore since we switched entirely to video. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Sorry, one question, What is the photography and video equipment do you carry? both the camera and the cover and the angle
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! We use Olympus/OM-System camera and lenses. This is the OM-1.1 camera with the Olympus 12-50mm/43mm macro and the Nauticam WWL-1 wideangle-wetlens. The lens can be switched from normal 12-50mm zoom mode to 43mm macro mode under water. Together with the WWL-1 we get a very wide angle of around 130°. We also use the GoPro Hero 11 Black for action and wide angle fish shots. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Thank you so much for the fast answer ❤
