His "personal rant" provided a launching of into the second part and I think he wanted to show how bullies are projecting their own fears and insecurities more than pointing out yours.

If there's anyone who's being bullied reading this right now, here's the thought that got me through some horrible years. If someone is low enough to be putting you down, then there is no value in their opinion in the first place and you shouldn't give their words any credit just like you wouldn't be listening to an idiot. This is especially true in your teens when most of your life circumstances aren't dependent on you.
And in case you are bothered by your appearance, here's something I learnt much later. There are almost 200 countries on this planet, all with different preferences with regards to looks. And it's quite possible that you can experience what it feels like to be very attractive just by hopping on a plane. And also growing up to be a decent intelligent adult adds a few points as well.

Reminds me of my favorite bike vs. car story: my partner was riding her bike in a lane of traffic, because she was going to make a left-hand turn on a 3-lane road. A motorist behind her was really upset about the 5-6 seconds this delayed his own turn, so after the turn (as he passed her) he rolled down his window and yelled "Hey - you're not a fucking car!"
To which my partner responded "You're not a fucking car either!"

Oddly enough, I've gotten both drive-by insults and complements for my fashion sense. My fashion sense has four rules.
"I care more for the whims of nature than the whims of man"
"There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing"
"If my body is complaining about my clothing I should wear something else"
"If I'm not going to care what people think in the previous rules, I might as well just wear what I want because F*** it"
I've been complemented for wearing a red cloak in summer (great for keeping the sun off, and looks awesome), and I've been insulted for wearing a warm coat on a cold spring day. Oddly enough, the insult did not hurt my feelings. It confused me, and made me disgusted that I went to the same college as the instigator. After watching this video, I also realize she was in a heated car... just sayin.

Is there a such thing as a non-circular wheel?

    • @EddiePortal
      @EddiePortal 10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

yes, there is! the 50 pence piece has a constant width and hence can be used as a wheel (if u really wanted to). But I don't think this counter example is the reason he used the seemingly clarifying adjective "circular", rather it was for emphasis, with perhaps a dash of comedy. Well I found it (kinda) funny. :p

It's really nice to see that someone got that, finally. If people are acting like jerks towards you and you took a harsh look at yourself, considered your recent actions, asked maybe someone close to you and relatively objective if you did anything that might be considered as offensive (which mostly won't be the case), then it's just those jerks being jerks and it's simply not your job to change youself to suit them better. Firstly, because that won't work since it's not about what you did, anyway, and, secondly, because jerks should be changing - not nice people. And if people are like "If everybody is treating you badly, then it must be your own fault." you can still be completely justified in the assumption that - well - everybody around me must be a jerk in that matter, then. As a nice person you often repeatedly get the advice to be more tough and get used to those things and adjust or even assimilate. But it is NOT your job to do that. It doesn't make sense and is exactly what leads to situations in which suddenly everbody is a jerk. So again, if someone is an ass then THEY need to deal with it (not that they will, but still they should), they should be the one sitting on a psychiatrist's couch and try to better themselves, not you, who is sad and depressed about being treated like shit. This is a normal reaction, not a failure.

Over the years I keep coming back to this video for the ending. I've been bullied and still struggle with low self esteem to this day. It's very affirming to see someone you admire say that you survived something instead of feeling weak because you let bullying affect you. I don't feel strong, but this video reminds me that I should. So thank you Hank for reminding me of that.

My husband is a cyclist. He was hit by a car which is actually impressive but when I got the call, very very scary. I drove very fast to the scene and I screamed at the driver's mom.
I say it's impressive because my husband is 6'2" and has very wide shoulders. He was wearing white, orange, and red and HOW DO YOU NOT SEE THAT! He was stopped at a red light. The light goes green, the traffic goes and the car that hit him was turning left.
He also rides in charity marathons and I do the driving for cycling teams. I have a lot of respect for cyclists. I'm not as avid as he is mostly because when he's training hard in the summer, I'm the team driver.
As for bullies, I'm a political writer, it doesn't end. That one has no easy answer and no one answer. I can say just don't give into them but that takes a great amount of self esteem and will power. Find someone like me who will side with you and help against the bullies. Trust me, bullies don't like people like me. We stand up to them and don't back down. I don't mind being the voice of the bullied until they learn they develop their own voice. I've done it before, I'll do it again.

      As for bullying -
People should remove themselves from situations in which they are bullied, period. No one should remain where they are merely surviving.
And if they are not capable of removing themselves (if they are children, for example), the adult responsible for their welfare should not hesitate to remove them. I didn't even wait for my daughter to be actually bullied at her school (though her teacher's behavior toward her came kinda close). All I needed to know was that she was unhappy and that it was unlikely to improve. From the moment I saw that, it was less than a week until she was out. For good.

    • @EyeLean5280
      @EyeLean5280 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Your definition of bullying is *not* the one I'm using. I am using the word the way most people mean it - degrading and hurtful language and actions that leave a person feeling disrespected as a human being and powerless in the relationship. that's what I mean by bullying and that's how my daughter's teacher was behaving.
How do you expect a child to "just be a strong backbone" in the face of a teacher like that? How was she supposed to "fight"? This old lady teacher certainly had no interest in changing and she had all the power in that relationship.
I'm sorry, but a good parent does not stand for such treatment of their children and does not leave their children to fend for themselves when they can't.
And anyway, by taking my child out of her bad situation I actually *was* teaching her to be strong and to know that certain things are simply not acceptable and that we cannot allow others to mistreat us. Since this teacher couldn't be honest about her behavior (many other kids saw and heard the things she denied doing), there was no way to work with her. She was mean and dishonest.
I feel that showing our daughter that mean and dishonest people don't deserve either our respect or our time is the best lesson possible. That's why withdrew both our respect and our time (as well as our money) from that school.
Furthermore, my daughter is in a much happier place where she's learning a lot. Your advice is really terrible, actually. I can only assume you're not a parent.

This rant is very personal for me. Until the age of 14 I was a massive nerd who was consistently bullied. Then a combination of a massive growth spurt and working out for sports turned me from 5'9" 150 to 6'0" 200 in 6 months and immediately ended the bullying. But the scars from the bullying are still here 25 years later. When I reported the bullying to my school counselor she recommended that I "jack slap him upside the head". To this day I hate confrontation and avoid it whenever I can even though I look like stone cold Steve Austin. In a sci-show video comments a person called Hank a "twitchy little weirdo" and I got viscerally angry with that person. Then my only thought was "I wonder if it was the same douchebag who called him a P#$$Y?". Then I laughed and it was all better.

The following comment is about dealing with bullying. The issue resonates with me. I will try to avoid ranting. I was bullied, but I was lucky enough to be physically bigger than my bullies. I also had a mental trick that saw me through a decade of dealing with bullying, a trick that literally made it all worth while for me. It's this idea: they can bully you, but only you can allow yourself to be a victim. Keep all of your abilities and value and awesomeness in mind, the bullies are utterly incapable of taking that away from you. Once you can hold onto that truth, then they've lost and you've won and there's nothing they can do about it. at all. ever.

This is another very big reason why Nerdfighters love Hank and John - they help, and keep it very real in doing so. :)

The worse part about bullying isn't really the bullying itself, it's the fact no one else seems to see that it's bullying. They think it's just us blowing things out of proportion, or that we're not trying hard enough to get along with the bullies. They keep saying, "Sticks and stones may break [your] bones, but words can never hurt [you]."
Even more, they think it's US, the BULLIED, who should change in order not to get bullied.
Here's a reality check for those who think like this: IT'S TOTAL BULLCRAP!
Bullies are the ones blowing stuff so out of proportion that they think they're better than anyone else! They're the ones who don't try to get along with people because they feel those people are beneath them! Words do hurt; that's why "the pen is mightier than the sword"!
Bullies are the ones who need to change, because they have nothing other than the idea that they're better in some way, and that to be 'someone' they must prove that they are better by making sure no one else is.
Bullying is bullying is bullying. End of story.

Too bad I've never had the stupidity to actually carry out the ideas I've come up with to get even without throwing a single punch or word. One idea was to next time I saw the person, pull out an air horn and blast it straight at their cab when they're on the phone. Second one is to start carrying a CO2 fire extinguisher around and smother them next time I saw them. Too bad neither of those are practical, but I'd bet a week's salary that I'd feel better afterwards.

I love what you said about bullying, because when I had a hard time in school a few years ago, your words felt so right about what I felt back then.
Now after changing school and having new amasing friends I know that people that put you down will not always be there. It ends at some point. I did hate myself in that time in that school but I got through it and now I'm here today and happier than ever, loving your videos!

I would have to say that you shouldn't just survive in the face of bullying (which in and of itself is a weird concept to me, especially since I've been on both sides of it) but you should thrive. In my experience, I was bullied and ostracized because I was smarter than everybody (too lazy to write everything out), but I was stereotypically weak and skinny, and a little awkward (ADHD meds inhibited social behavior). I wasn't satisfied with where I was, and on a whim I went out for cross country. It was the best decision I ever made. I grew just about every facet. Now I'm friends with almost everybody, I'm in amazing shape, and I was recently nominated to attend the Air Force Academy. I guess that point I am making is that when you allow yourself to be victimized, you become and remain a victim. When you decide to make yourself even better, then your life does get better. So go, be awesome.

Super story, Thank you for the reality check. Bullying is hard and inexplicable, but we do survive it. On the whole creeps shouting things at bicyclists thing: Recently someone shouted at me that I was too fat to ride a bike. But I was riding a bike(?). So I was left with the charming understanding that some people do not have very competent mental processes. It was enjoyable to reflect upon this as I pedalled along.

a person on a bike of any kind is much braver and probably more masculine than a guy in a truck shouting profanities at said person on a bike. Its basically like being the guy on a battlefield stuck with only a bb gun or maybe even a pistol of some sort while the guy in the tank drives by you shouting at you how you are a pussy for being on foot. in the above example, yes the guy is stupid for taking a bb gun to a war, but maybe it was the bb gun his now dead platoon sergeant and best friend had bought for his kid back home or something

Pussy is a pretty horrible word anyway. It's slang for a vagina and used to suggest weakness or vulnerability. It just implies that weak or vulnerable people are women, that women are all weak and vulnerable, and that it's an insult to be considered a woman. Hank, I feel like you meant well with this video but adopting the use of the word pussy in your rant the same way it was used against you completely overshadows the fact that you clearly understand that it's a horribly gendered, awful word. I just feel like you could have gotten out everything that you wanted to say without defensively refuting the assertion made (that you are a pussy), which implies that being considered a woman is something offensive in the first place.

Thank you, Hank. This is actually surprisingly more comforting than having people say, "It gets better", and "find a way to deal with it," because what you said is absolutely true: you just need to survive it. I don't think you can really deal with stuff like this, but knowing that other people have felt or feel the same way really helps. Sometimes the best thing is not for someone to say, "it gets better", but just for somebody to remind you once in a while you're awesome and to understand.
