- VICE interviews pro skateboarder Josh Kalis about his early days street skating in his hometown. For more skateboarding action, check out VICE's Epicly Later'd: vice.com/epicly-later-d
The Kalis series finally begins. Right off the bat, Josh clears up a few issues for everybody and we get right into things with how it all got started in Grand Rapids. Sean Sheffey appears and lets us know that Josh has always been a well respected skater, and Mike Blabac recalls when Josh helped him learn how to use his camera. Ted Lee provided the archival footage of a young Kalis, and if there had been more time we would have loved to show more of Ted's incredible old footage that includes a New Deal demo with Ed Templeton and Mike Vallely. Enjoy. - กีฬา
You can tell that Josh is still in disbelief and awe of Sheffey to this day. So dope.
We all Fanned on him. Sheff was our dude. He repped NYC for us when we couldn’t. Love to. SHEFF and King Kalis.
Isn’t dill technically “up river now” ?
josh “i was grounded” kalis
Too funny 🎯🤣🤣🤣
Ha! He totally said that a bunch of times!
Kalis is a legend and it’s crazy that he wasn’t fished over by these dudes lucky enough to chat with him.
"I always played it cool"......."Damn! You remembered that shit!"
i met Jason Dill about 2 years ago at a signing in Auckland, New Zealand and i have to say he was such a cool dude, he was chilling with all the kids and signing auto graphs even though he didnt have to because he wasnt ment to be in the signing.
Still can tell how he views Sean. He was one of the dopest dudes for awhile when I was younger
josh kalis is fucking awesome.. i skated with him once in grand rapids, michigan, which i believe is where he was born and raised.. moved to philly later, i think.. point being, im from michigan and skating in grand rapids with kalis will always be something that makes me smile
Josh is grounded this entire episode.
Lol !!! You’re right .
Was thinking that
The level of stokage that Kalis had when sheffy remembered knocking on his door is hilarious
That's so cool they went to go get him to skate. When an older guy does that it's a moment that kid will never forget, respect!
Guy was on MTV hanging out with Ozzie's kids when they were teens talkin about kalis being up river lol
so true lol. dill was at a bad point during this era.
@@drinkingpoolwater what era ,this was 7 years ago tf
@@alexandru-mariosidor7980... that's an era.
I respect Dill. But Damn he's always loved the sound of his own voice. And he's a nut job haha
dill showed up at a skate shop in my city like 15 years ago with pictures of himself, a fat ass stack of pictures. hundreds. walked in, went to the counter, signed all of the pictures, walked out. not a word spoken. just left the stack of photos there. I grabbed on its still on the wall in my old room at my parents house
+DjDz wow
Dill is more legit than dyrdek Berra kalis and Taylor.. How tf is Taylor famous. Dude can't skate for shit anymore hence his shitty company Sovrn
“They’re up river...ya know where TVs are, the fishings better” sounded so pretentious lol
@@lsclsc9960 I haven’t seen Mikey Taylor skate in years
Josh Kalis repping Grand Rapids Michigan!
Dill calling kalis up river is fucking laugh out loud funny considering how FA is doing right now
watched this like 15 times before remembering to thumbs up. favourite later'd ep.
This dude showed up at the local park in GR and hooked everyone up with gear!
WiFi and TV's? So basically all the Holiday inns are "Up River"
kalis' segment was boss. one of my favorites
Kalis would pull up at the skate zoo in Kalamazoo every now and then, he had that effect on us that Sheffy had on him.
Now he pulls up at the Grand Rapids park everyday lol. Always repping Michigan. Glad he’s back.
As he should. Dude is a skateboarding legend of the highest tier.
Still has one of the best looking 360 flips to this day
this makes me proud to live in michigan. i live a while away from grand rapids though
I skated with Kali's and Mike the photographer in east Lansing Michigan. Sheffey was at a demo too. Had a pretty good scene there back in the day. Tony hawk and the bones brigade at the skateathon. I won a Ron Allen deck at a demo and he signed it.
I saw Sean Sheffy, Ron Young and Tony Hawk do a demo in '92 at Ohio Surf & Skate
I remember seeing josh kalis is 411 video's and always wanting to see more, I remember seeing less of Dill and not being interested in Jason Dill, right now, I have an autographed poster of Jason Dill on my wall... WtF... I think Caswell Berry gave it to me when he worked at a skate shop called Go Skate in SJ
one of the best ones
Michigan represent!
yepp. good shit, good watch. keep em coming
Best epicly laterd of all time.
Holy shit I used to have Lennie Kirk's board, back when the Workshop was super new. I forgot about him.
from gr those pics in the books are on alpine on a curb next to target the brick gap is not there n e more ................ i watched him skate a monster gap from kmart to alpine theater in the mid 90s
🔥🔥🔥
Bring this to viceland
Cleanest 360 flip ever 3.16
im from GR too. what are your favorite spots?
Well yea from lansing here also
best tre flip ever at the end
Back blunt to switch front board? Not many people are doing that today, josh is rad as fuck.
Sheffey looks like a UFC fighter.
RESPECT
at around 7:40 a logo of a sun with a beat up face appears on the screen ... does any one know what skate company was that??? that was my first legit skateboard .... got it early 90's ... Dope shape, waasnt a popsickle ... Any help with the info would be appreciated ..
Heh, the same Vision Ken Park deck that was my first real skateboard. :) I had it as grey though. Beautiful board art on that one.
ya i agree i like the more creative skating with a hesh style, but a smooth tech style with steeze is cool too
so do you know why he left it? because I think aws with habitat represent the best way the skateboardig well in my opinion...
sure it's not just ads trying to load? in the last month YT has *really* slowed down big time for me as well but as far as i can tell it's due to increased inline adserving combined with the fact that i'm blocking that.
Anyl 2019?
2:05 so..... where did that end up?
From my city 👌🏼💯
respect for sheffey
Kalis has dope style.
my dad grounded for me from my roller skates for the win
Sean Sheffey Epicly later'd
papasquat 315 Yes!!!!
Really I think they just need to make a Plan B epicly later’d
i had that Ken Park board but it was green.
dude seriously a movie about josh kalis...7 parts to it
7:57 those wheels 😂
not a great idea to get offended by the term up-river and then immediately using footage of you growing up in a normal looking suburban neighborhood
You don’t understand what that term means...it’s not about having a good upbringing...it’s about where they stood within the company. Dill was saying that certain skaters had a more privileged roll and got the most benefits within the company while others got fed scraps. Which is dumb, because there was a big period when dill wasn’t doing shit while Kalis was out busting his ass skating.
Epicly latered sean sheffey !
That board he rides is so small!
Lol he looks like deadmau5....so awesome this dude decided to make all these Epicly later'd ..there nothing else like these on the internet
no... jason dill said that after kalis joined DGK
Honestly, Josh Kalis seems like a bit of a stereotype to me - the middle-class white kid acting like he grew up in the hood. He seems like a great guy, but the hustler routine is a little tired.
Lol bro Kalis has never claimed to be hood or a gangsta he’s street he grew up in the streets skating
@@calebhogue2619 he didnt grow up in the streets man, he got grounded like every week for being a dumbass
Malibu's Most Wanted! Lol
Kalis is from michigan ?
Dill is "up river" now in 2020 with FA
charging silly money for stuff that nobody buys
Triple OG
Haha yeah that'd be sweet, I do tend to favour the hesh skaters. It just gets me psyched to see guys like sammy baca or andrew allen rippin' mach 10 at a ledge or a set or something.
6:26 Ellwood School Goleta, CA :]
i second the dude under me!
funny dill is king supreme how’s the fishing in 2020
Sean Sheffey's a cool dude
Kalis, a very strong traditional klingon name
Gayest fckng names ever
sickest EL ever
Hell yea gr baby
Tsmooth Godwin xx
shout out to all the Michigan skaters!
🤘🏻🤘🏻
hella
fuck yeah
I want Kalis on FA
Carl Shipman used to skate in cargo pants. I think thats pretty cool.
kid looks like malcom in the middle at 08:06
Definitely "up river"!
@tm agad you wouldn't even be able to swim in these waters, you'd drown quick. Michigan the last of the real
The dramaaaaaa
Everyone who bags damn xD
Josh is cute! I love skater boys :)
e92 M3, good choice.
reminds me of rod dyrdek
Josh Calisse
Thought he had a big ass face tattoo in the thumbnail lol
I have respect for dill but josh is right it ain’t cool that he called him out in Dylan’s video (rip Dylan) josh is as street as you get he’s right when he says that. But damn dill why man?
That FASTEST melon bs 180
Fair enough, I guess I can just relate to dills skating more. I think he does seem like kind of a pompous naive dude though. Josh seems more down to earth in some ways though. Not stressing fashion and shit so hard.
I love dill and kalis don’t see why dill had to go and hate on him
Gets offended by term 'up-river'... Gets out of late model BMW a few shots later
Lmao
Seen this dude today at clemente skate park and he aint that friendly...
This dude is a trip but like on the best s*** though
wtf does "more black" mean?...and it's sean btw not shane
Ilman switch mongoa olisi täydellinen aikamme skedettäjä 😀
Dill is so pretentious. Josh was always in his own lane, never needed a trend or a gimmick. Thankfully this isn't as sickened disrespectful as I thought it was 12 years ago lmao.
who is he? he's jason fucking dill
Its easy to be skeptical of somebody who looks and speaks a certain way and is white, but you also don't know what the man has gone through, regardless of the early footage of a normal looking suburb. Being street is different than being hood and has more to do with struggling and surviving than it does with being from some crazy ghetto. Philadelphia is pretty rough no matter where you go and the majority of the white neighborhoods have their share of problems.
Straighten that hat young man
🤔Bought his old shoes
