  • I have had it with people bashing Ringo Starr. In this video I give ( with help of a few drum friends the reasons why I’m tired of it and why Ringo truly is a great and legendary drummer and why you need to revisit the Beatles catalogue and rethink your negative opinion on Ringo!
This video is dedicated to my long time friend Mike Rittenhouse!

Great video. You don't have to convince me that Ringo and the Beatles were great. I am a bit older and my first influences were the old jazz masters (Gene Krupa) , however I was watching when the Beatles hit the tv for the first time and I was greatly influenced by Ringo, absolutely. I have been playing now since since 1967--all kinds of bands and I still do. The only criticism I have of your video and I think a shared criticism that might be held by Ringo nay-sayers, is your use of superlatives and absolutes. We must remember that music like art is very subjective and even though you say you are not trying to convince us, you have not allowed any room for discussion, because you have closed the door. Its the opportunity to discuss Ringo and the Beatles and any music really that makes us all open to education. If you want to teach us then leave the door open. I thought about why I can't stand "bashers" like Barker or Chad Smith-they play their music well: loud, cutting, bashing singles --but I don't like the music-its not the music I listen to. It's not fair for me to criticize these drummers because of the music they play. I think great drummers are Weckl, Stanton Moore, Buddy Rich-but jazz and fusion is the music I love. I have played top 40 (for years) and loved it-I understand playing in a dance band--you have one comment on here "The Beatles suck"-isn't that my point? He doesn't say Ringo sucks-he doesn't appreciate the Beatles , not his style of music, and thats fine. There's so much music out there, something for everyone. People can put Ringo down-they're allowed (albeit they should consider good, quality references for their opinion-but that doesn't always happen) . Even though you end with the suggestion that critics of Ringo's playing should listen and study all those Beatles tunes--which is a good suggestion, don't ever say he or any other drummer is absolutely the best--because you are not allowing us to discover for ourselves. Say "I think he was great, and I hope you will too." Thanks for your video and comments.

If you genuinely love and appreciate Ringo, you have to acknowledge that he didn't come to an end with the Beatles. Everyone tends to talk about him in the past tense. However, he's still playing and has only improved with age and sobriety between his solo career and an exhaustive session catalog recording for other artists. Some of that session work is uncredited! He's been one of my biggest influences as a drummer but the reality is that I have learned the most from him through study of his post-Beatles career. I discovered that he does have technical ability. He does know how to use rudiments. He can play very credible jazz (I saw this in Spain). He's no Buddy Rich or Lenny White, of course. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Some of those guys do, and a lot of that is due to the fact that they had opportunities to show off what they could do. Im mainly talking about those gigs where you can only play backbeat with the occasional fill, the music is easy and the band is named after the singer/songwriter and they get all the attention. I wouldn't take a gig like that unless it paid a lot or it was my friend's music.

Everyone in attendance including myself was blown away by the groove and feel of the drummer ( Kenwood Dennard ) truly amazing! But basically unknown outside of the drum community. In the end it’s all about supporting the band on not necessarily standing out. Support the song and musicians you will get work lots of work.

I have recenly been in another in another 'heated debate' ... this time regarding Ringo Starr vs Buddy Rich ... yeah I know right LMFAO !
One guy said Ringo who is left handed and plays on a right handed kit gave him the "Beauty of originality".
Nope, sorry, just wrong. Left handed drummers on right handed kits, and vice versa, is not unusual. Starting from scratch, it makes no difference. Likewise LH on RH guitar. Pianos are never left handed (apart from a couple of bizarre experimental/novelty attempts) yet some of the greatest pianists are left handed.
For many musicians, hours and hours of practice raise their weaker hand to the same level as the stronger one. As a result they are virtually ambidextrous.
Ringo Starr was and still isn't anywhere near that level, especially live. When he's live you can hear uneven quavers, poorly executed rolls, and sloppy breaks that overshoot the bar.
Rich was brilliant, and arguably the best technician ever with phenomenal speed but but he was also an obnoxiously arrogant asshole.
In my opinion (for what it's worth to the disillusional Ringo Fanatics) the best drummers (indeed musicians) of the modern era are the session players who turned BOTH of their hands to numerous different styles.... Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Jeff Porcaro, Simon Phillips etc.
Quite frankly they make the former Beatles drummer sound like a five year old bashing saucepans with wooden spoons.
Interesting that "Ringo Starr's all Star band" has always featured a second brilliant drummer, including the wonderful Jim Keltner to cover the more technical stuff as he just sits there playing straight 4/4. He has never appeared without a second drummer since the Beatles disbanded ... EVER, and that on it's own speaks volumes !
Ringo is at best an ordinary, barely adequate drummer, a crappy singer, and an absolute shite actor.
HE MAY WELL BE THE LUCKIEST MAN ALIVE !!!!

I loved Ringo's playing on the Beatles records. His playing was great on those songs; so creative while at times being so simple (Ticket to Ride a simple pattern but so perfect, same with Come Together). Ringo shouldn't be bashed by anyone. His playing in this era was simply iconic. That being said, when I hear that he was the greatest drummer of all time, that is beyond a stretch. If he was, what did he do after The Beatles drumming wise that was so legendary? I know he had some hit records in the early '70's, but drumming wise, there was really nothing. Granted, The Beatles work was a tough act to follow, but I never hear of anyone speaking of his drumming, post The Beatles, being iconic or influencing, or really much of anything. I'm reminded of an interview with Buddy Rich asking the question, "If you were so great in one decade, why are you not in the next?". This is not in any way a knock, it's just a balance on reality. He was great with The Beatles; the songs would not have been the same without him and I dare say, there might even have been fewer hit records without him. But after The Beatles there was nothing as far as drumming that was anything special. I'm sure that I will be chastised for this post of my opinion.

Ringo's contributions are immense. Let's not forget the tuning that he has on his kit, and THAT is yet another reason why his drumming is so classic. He definitely is a heck of a groove drummer, and I agree that if people had tried to play his parts without any of the feel, the songs would be wrecked. I just love how he interprets the songs through the kit, and he has been very fortunate to have the band to work with during their times. No one was grooving as well as Ringo was, and to me, he will still be a great drummer. He's no Buddy Rich, for sure, but to each his own. If he had been in a jazz quartet, I am sure he would have done quite well in that area as well because he has the chops for jazz.
