Why will I flip-flop on the Appalachian Trail in 2025?

- I intend to thru hike the Appalachian Trail in 2025. The plan is to flip flop, starting in Harper's Ferry, first hiking NOBO through WV, MD, PA, NJ, NY, CT, MA, VT, NH and ME. After summiting Mount Katahdin, I will use planes, trains and automobiles back to Harper's Ferry. I'll then hike SOBO through VA, TN, NC and GA, finishing on the Springer Mountain summit. I hope to post update videos to my TH-cam channel frequently.
Heck yeah, man - I flip-flopped in 2023, and I'd do it that way again in a heartbeat. The weather was amazing, there were way fewer biting insects, the hostels and shelters weren't crowded, and that initial stretch from Harper's Ferry all the way to Vermont is a (relatively) gentle way to build up your trail legs. Good luck and happy trails!!!!
I flip-flopped in 2016, totaling 1860 miles. My feet couldn't handle northern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey so early in the hike. I chose to flip early so as to complete the southern half, which I did. I have just recently started considering a second go at it. Good fortune to you.
This is an incredible approach for the AT in 2025. It gives the south the greatest opportunity for recovery from the hurricane damage.
I just discovered hiking, I'm really intrigued...
I started with day hikes, then overnight trips, and worked up to week-long backpacking adventures. Best way to figure out what works for you is to just start hiking :)
I flip-flopped in '22. Met KJ & Shoelace on the trail. Summited the same day as KJ. You will have a blast on this hike! Flip flops have the "best" weather (got hit by a week of hurricane rain in Maine which made the river crossing interesting). Best of luck 🤞 You got this.
Great content, keep it up! 🌟🎉
What a terrific bucket list adventure!
@@JackBornstein I never dared dream that I’d have this opportunity!
So excited for you and this adventure!!
@@dianasmith6079 I know, right?!
Good luck! I look forward to the updates
Thanks! I will probably make some prep/gear videos but the trail updates won’t start until May.
To truly complete this AT route approach, you should also wear flip-flops.
