I really recommend analog horror creators take notes from real recordings and damaged tapes like these- I know the effects can be hard to replicate without an actual VCR but I really think it’s worth investing in, in order to make the setting believable. I think a lot of series (especially art and design-focused ones) are great in other areas but can be lacking in terms of chronological accuracy.
Basically, leaning more towards Jack Stauber and less towards visuals that are clearly quite clean and digital that end up looking much too new. Research things like fonts, design styles, color palettes, even language often used 30-40 years ago bc it can make a big difference
@sydneyw7375 I remember taking three years trying to recreate VHS glitches in a video editing software to which I got close but ended up scrapping it. This is because it was just easier to get a VCR and doing the tracking glitches in real time instead of trying to create them.
This was recorded when crazy war and shit was going on in Iran so while we were watching Mario and laughing our asses off, people aboard Iraqi war planes were UP IN FLAMES!!!!
And did they have a right to talk over the Mario credits; other than letting us know which date this was (1/26/91) and giving us something to reflect on 30 years later,
@@JasonDelarosa2000Wow, this tape was 20 years old when this video was uploaded on to TH-cam back in 2011. No wonder why most people call Super Mario Bros. 3 an "oldie"

To me, it looks like the episodes could've been recorded on a slower speed to save on tape. While the normal speed was referred to as SP (Standard Play), there were often options like LP, EP and SLP in many VCRs back when the show first aired. Slower recoding and playback speeds always result into worse picture and sound, but people put up with it, as blank tapes weren't always that cheap. Also, slower speeds do increase the likelihood of "tearing" you can see on the image.
One thing to note, that EP and SLP are the same thing it's just that different VCR would name it differently. Also there was also VP Mode in which a 2 Hour VHS would be 10 hours in that speed. However, only a couple of Panasonic VCRs of the 2000s would implement that speed.
This is definilly EP mode, but in a very damaged tape. There's a lot of slowdowns, which means the tape is not moving smoothly though the mechanism. It's super dirty.
Only older people understand this, but i am very nostalgic about the way music used to sound on vhs/tapes. like as you used them the sound would get a weird distortion to it that you could only get from heavily used tapes/cassettes
As a person who was born near the end of analog in the u.s. I agree. I get some feeling of nostalgia from old VHS wacky things like this video, along with analog shutdowns and loss.
Get two VCRs and two VHSes. Play one tape on one VCR and record it on the other. Keep switching between VCRs until you have something with severe generation loss.
