I skied here once in 2015, their last season. Hiked this place in July, didn't get to see the insides of the lodge though, it was really nice and "refreshed" my memories of this place. They opened in 1962 in Tuxedo, NY as Sterling Forest, while it wasn't the first ski hill in that area (Mt. Peter opened in 1936) it was the first with a chairlift. The original summit chairlift ran from the bottom of the current Tiger lift (Double chair that goes to the summit) and went up the Snoopy run to the intersection of Tiger Pass and Tiger West. If you saw a ski lift tower with some terminal parts with no chairs, haul rope etc, that's it. Then in 1969 they got a new summit lift, Tiger, that's the one that still exists today. The original summit lift was relocated and is now the Alley Cat lift. The shortest lift right by the base, Bunny, was installed in 1972 and later in the 70s they installed Bowl, the double chair left of Alley Cat on the really wide trail. Sterling Forest did well as the "Winter resort" style was picking up in New York with ski areas like this, Pennsylvania with Camelback and Vermont with Mount Snow. In the 2000s this ski area struggled, and in 2006 it was "permanently closed". It sat dormant for a season, until new investors bought it in 2007. In that time, a lot of Sterling Forest's loyal clientele had switched to nearby Mount Peter and Thunder Ridge and they never seemed to return. The mountain reopened for the 2007-2008 season under a new name, Tuxedo Ridge with just the Tiger and Bunny lifts running. They initially expected failure on their first season, so as sort of a "Yolo" move the owners decided to offer free tickets for the last few months of the season. In a good turn of events, this just brought more skiers in, and they reopened the next season. Things were looking up, as for the next season the Alley Cat and Bowl lifts returned to service. However, that very season the Bowl lift suffered a mechanical failure and hasn't run since. Alley Cat closed for good in 2011 for unknown reasons. In 2014 a casino was proposed across the street that would likely buy the ski area and give it snowmaking and lift upgrades it sorely needed. The casino however failed to receive permits and it seemed like the end was near. Their last day of operation was March 22, 2015. Although the closure was justified by management as being due to a legal battle between the casino and the resort (Casino allegedly bought it and wanted to sell when they didnt get permits), it was clear that the closure was due to a culmination of factors, such as aging infrastructure, a lack of snowfall and snowmaking, and an ever-shrinking base of loyal skiers. Also, that thing you pointed out was in fact a snow gun, a fan gun to be specific Ski map: skimap.org/data/299/7/1238877395.jpg (1 is Tiger, 2 is Bunny, 3 is Alley Cat and 4 is Bowl)
The snake is a Black Rat Snake, the largest snake in NY and can reach up to eight feet. They're harmless and love living in rocky areas and along slopes. They're actually known to have a really good personality and don't often get too aggressive.
Worked here for two seasons during high school. In 2015 I would snowboard about 4-5 days out of the week after school. I also learned to snowboard here. A lot of memories and friendships made at ridge. The closure broke a lot of hearts from Tuxedo and Greenwood Lake. It honestly tragically closed and not just because of the lack of snow. There were many reasons for the closure including new owners of the resort in the early 2010s. It makes me so sad every time I'd drive by ridge fully empty and abandoned. Just 5 years ago it was poppin full of families trying to escape from the chaos of NY. It was a truly freeing place. Being in Colorado now there are monster-sized resorts, like Vail or Aspen/Snowmass. I appreciate ridge a lot more knowing I first started there. Now ripping through trees in the back bowls at Vail always reminds me of the memories and all the good that came out of it. The spirit of ridge moves on. Maybe one day it will be back, but we will have to wait and see. (PS Tuxedo is not upstate NY)
@@TheGpn99 oh certainly - I just meant the small resort character lives on at places like those. Personally, this time of year - the east wall at Arapaho basin is sooo much fun (today in particular lol).
I used to go here a lot as a kid and during the 14-15 season I was a ski instructor and absolutely miss those times. Although the only lifts that were open were Bunny and Tiger meanwhile the 2 on the far left were closed off for a quite sometime. About that office where the whole ceiling collapsed that section already had major water damage from the last time I checked in early 2015. Awesome video
I used to go here, place closed a few years back and watching this really brought the memories back. I drive past there all the time and also wondered what it looked like rotting away. Such a great little place, sucks it closed. Awesome video dude.
I spent every weekend here from the time I was 5 till I was in my late teens. Many of the best memories of my childhood were made here! It’s a damn shame people aren’t going to have the experience of this wonderful place anymore!
Heartbreaking!! All of my kids learned to ski and then snowboard here. We were season pass holders-VIP was extra, worth every penny, as you got so many more runs in. I was not a skier but tired of making soup and hot chocolate so I joined the ski club here that gave me free lessons. We were on first name basis with every lift operator, ski instructor and all staff. Great, great people worked here and took such pride in their work. Made my kids childhood. Wonderful family place. Kids would all go in ski and snowboard races. Found our passes a few months ago. Why would have I kept them all those years?? Such memories. Snowboarding was brand new and my son and nephews were first little kids on the slopes with boards. So great.
I really enjoy your adventures, I love that you don’t have a long intro too and you get right to the exploring and give us some background on where you are! 👍🏻👍🏻
For those wondering, it's called the Tuxedo Ski Ridge (Formerly Sterling Forest Ski Area) in Tuxedo, NY. It had the Forest of Fear across the street (which closed in about 2018) and is next to the NY Renaissaince Faire (still open in the summer.) I lived near here half my life, nearly all my classmates used to go skiing and snow boarding here. Lots worked here, too. Good place.
When you go into the comments section to get an even better idea of the history of the place, and there's lots of information about the snake :P Beautiful place. Overall a very interesting exploration, so different - harder to visit an abandoned ski resort than a house. By the way, you choose the music fantastically.
grew up riding there from 1993/4 till the mid 2000’s, worked there from like 2009-2011, and now live up the road from it. the seemingly warmer and inconsistent winters we got were definitely the death of it. there are still spartan races and stuff held there in the summer(pre covid at least) so it’s not 100% abandoned.

As time stands still on these abandoned places, Mother Nature, decay, vandals, do not. Eventually, each one will take its turn in a race to the end of its beginning. It astonishes me that the owner would up and abandone thousands of dollars of various equipment, rather than take the initiative to auction it off. Just another tragic story of what once was. Thanks so much for sharing and video taping without the gang consistently being in the video. That kind of scenario much of the time can become a huge annoyance. Cannot wait for the next video. Nice informative video.it's sad to see however. It would be great if someone somehow could revive it since the basic infrastructure is there. Add some modern snow guns somehow and people would come I'm sure. Especially if the lift ticket prices were kept reasonable, not 185 per day !
For just 5 years mother nature really took her toll, "good find", 5 years is really not that long, since closure, I wonder if anything was left in that safe, Watching this and watching a Halloween Baking show at the same time, yours is more interesting by far,
it was actually bought by a Casino company the 5 years ago and they got approved by the town to build a casino but in the limited licenses handed out by the state they didn't get one when they handed a few out. since then its sat untouched.
It's crazy to look at this place and know it hasn't even been closed that long but looks like it's been closed for 10+ years. The nature around it just pulling everything back in and reclaiming the area. Also a good show of global warming, the decline in snow fall.
QUESTION!!! The ''bee's'' nest you pointed out looked like they was made with mud. Could you tell if it was mud like? From the looks of them, the way they was mounted on top of something and basically attached to the wall looks more like they might have been bird's nests. There is a small bird, can't recall the name, that builds nests like these with its mate to lay the eggs. Once hatched and big enough to leave the nest they go on down the road BUT they will return to the same nest during their migration and start all over again. This is more info than what you wanted to hear...lol
@@beckyhigh Yes, Barn Swallow is what I was looking for. That is what we call them in Oklahoma. Under bridges is their favorite place to nest. Thank You for helping my old brain...

There's a place called the Marshall Habilitation Center in Marshall, Missouri. It comes to mind when watching your videos. It fairly recently completely closed down, but the grounds are so big, with so many buildings, that in its last couple years, there were only a few buildings being used. I only lived in Marshall for a short time, so there is a lot of history about it that I don't know. But I'm sure after reading up on it, you will want to explore it yourself. :) I remember the eerie feeling I got just from driving around the grounds, seeing old Christmas decorations left up. From marshallnews.com: "Marshall Habilitation Center was built in 1899 and opened its doors in 1901, which at the time of the facility was called the Missouri Colony for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic. Residing on 235 acres, the campus is comprised of 53 buildings totaling 589,494 square feet."

Nice informative video.it's sad to see however. It would be great if someone somehow could revive it since the basic infrastructure is there. Add some modern snow guns somehow and people would come I'm sure. Especially if the lift ticket prices were kept reasonable, not 185 per day !
For just 5 years mother nature really took her toll, "good find", 5 years is really not that long, since closure, I wonder if anything was left in that safe, Watching this and watching a Halloween Baking show at the same time, yours is more interesting by far,
Neat video!!!
Can’t believe skis and boards were left. I know out of date now, but why leave behind then?
Loved the video
it was actually bought by a Casino company the 5 years ago and they got approved by the town to build a casino but in the limited licenses handed out by the state they didn't get one when they handed a few out. since then its sat untouched.
Nice one ☝️
Swift is the bird.
Barn swallow?
Yep, those are bird nests
@@beckyhigh Yes, Barn Swallow is what I was looking for. That is what we call them in Oklahoma. Under bridges is their favorite place to nest. Thank You for helping my old brain...
@@derbydriver I live in Oklahoma and haven't heard of the Swift but another viewer reminded me that they are called Barn Swallows, at least here in Oklahoma.
Damn that snake is big!
That lil *sniff sniff* got me hollering 😂
Thanks for opening the fridge!
Yes so done with what’s up guys
What place is this??
March 5, 2015 last time it was used, yup 👍
Cool video!

How's it? 😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜
I'm trying my best to be as good as you and the proper people!
