  • Shillingbury Tales is a British television comedy-drama series made by ATV for ITV and broadcast 1980-81.
Comprising a single feature-length pilot and six one-hour episodes, the series deals with life in an idealised fictional English village and stars Robin Nedwell, Diane Keen, Nigel Lambert, Jack Douglas, John Le Mesurier, Bernard Cribbins and Trevor Howard.
It was preceded by a feature length pilot episode The Shillingbury Blowers starring Trevor Howard, broadcast 6 January 1980.
The series was written by Francis Essex and directed by Val Guest. Unusually for a British situation-comedy at that time it was recorded entirely on location on 16mm film and consequently there was no laughter track. Much of the filming took place in the village of Aldbury in Hertfordshire.
The show ended when ATV lost its franchise licence to broadcast and its replacement Central declined to continue production of the series. The series was broadcast in a number of countries around Europe.

Originally made by ATV for ITV as a single feature-length pilot, ATV lost its franchise to Central. Shillingbury Tales 1980-1981 there followed six weekly episodes of Shillingbury ... whilst made by ATV: 17 May '81 - Tinker/ 24May - Melon/ 31May -Cloudburst/ 7June - Legend/ 14June - Miracle/ 21June '81 - Daydream. Central took over the franchise but declined to continue the series. In 1983 a spin-off Shillingbury called Cuffy starred Bernard Cribbins' as Cuffy, but didn't feature Robin Nedwell or Diane Keen, as their acting careers had taken them in other directions.

I loved ATV as a kid. When it was name changed to Central in '82 although the 'same' company by a technicality it wasn't the same. They made a 35mm mini series called Kennedy. and the last to be shot on that format, it wasn't made by ITC. After Raise the Titanic flopped for ITC it bankrupt the film offshoot of ATV. Coupled with being forced to changed its name ATV it was a double blow. I think Hammer House of Horror and The Shillingbury Tales were the last 'brand new' ITC made ror ATV to be shown between 1980-81. Its spin off in 1983 Cuffy was shot on videotape but lost its appeal under Central. Great show though.

@@angelacooper2661 I noticed this was on Talking Pictures this afternoon - presumably that's why you are commenting today. I recall 1979 as the year Thatcher came to power - in 1979 to 80 I was best friends with Nigel the son of the late Michael Meacher (Labour Environment Minister) and we did British Constitution O Level classes. I also recall in around October 1979 - when I was 15 - some of us from our year in secondary school in Highgate went to Paris for a week. In 1980 on a trip to Brussels I wandered off with Nigel Meacher and he drank too much alcohol (typical Brit) and threw up in a cinema aisle near the start of the showing and I had to sit right through worrying whilst he fell asleep and snored - the Belgians thought he was ill. Just three months ago, I was contacted by an old school friend whom I had not seen for 40 years - as he was organizing a reunion for some of the lads.

I live in the U.S. and there is a very, very old building in the downtown sector of my city that has etched in the stone at the top, The Oddfellows Society. I have always wondered what it meant and who they were. The building itself is a barbershop or was. I never go downtown anymore for years now. So maybe it is torn down or not a barbershop now.

Yeah I think it was sort of to show that the cohesion of the village was best when they were working to their own amateur style of music than the standards elsewhere that would curb their go-get them spirit. When the upstart sees that them being in good cheer but off-tune is best and accepts that they all can move on.
