The Russian president Vladimir Putin is often thought of as a strong leader that can DESTROY any Western journalist or liberal Russian with FACTS AND LOGIC. However, the truth is that Putin is really SCARED of debate: all of Putin's interviews and press conferences are highly scripted, and Putin has never participated in a single presidential debate in history. He is not used to hearing any criticism to his face, and in the very rare occasions when he does, he gets pretty angry. Today we will be watching the one time Putin got challenged right to his face: a video from a 2010 dinner meeting, in which the Russian Anti-Z musician Yuri Shevchuk from the legendary Soviet rock band DDT called Putin out on the lack of freedom of speech in the country. So, what happens when someone argues with Putin? And why is Putin so scared of debating anyone? Let's talk about it.

What if the journalist is a Pilger, a Hersh or a filmaker like Stone.
Pilger without the slightest irony from Mr I. Know-Western-Propaganda described Putin's high popularity as proof of his worth.
Hersh describes Putin as a gentleman because he knows Putin was graceful after losing a bout against a female Japanese judo exponent. That's it. That's his take on Putin.
Oh, did he say Putin was a logical player?
      Stone is simply a sycophant.
All those hours of interviews and not only never presses this dictator, but actually discounted Putin's corruption stating he's met wealthy people and in his opinion Putin's clean.
These 3 are often quoted by leftists as explaining why Putin should be supported.

If only it were true that authoritarian dictators could be explained with psychopathy, though. That would at least give us a theoretical way to screen them out.

Just to show how big Yuri Shevchuck is will give one example:
He visited on his own the Russian troops in Grozny just days after the ill-fated New Year's Eve assault. He did not spend time at their main base at Mozdok or Khankala but he wanted to be close to the frontlines and he managed to communicate with soldiers and officers from the Volgograd corps.
He spend between 2 weeks to a month in Chechnya so he can see for himself what is this war all about.
Later he did not forget his promise about supporting the troops and managed to sent a lot of lads to Germany for rehabilitation. He also supported them with getting new western metal limbs and wheelchairs as those made in Russia back in the 90s were totall dogshit.
Edit: if anyone is interested about his visit in Chechnya there are clips of his stay as he was recording everything even when soldiers have given him the stars of their fallen captain as remembrence and later he immortalize him in some verse he has created about him. There were some other rare occasions where some journalists got to ask something challenging, but he either ignores those type of questions or goes on a tangent and responds to something completely different.

Thank you. I agree. It has been propagated into many Russian people's minds that patriotism = supporting your nation no matter what. While I think that it is more patriotic to point out the uncomfortable truth and wrongdoings and weak parts when it's due because people (and the society) only benefit from fixing the weak parts at the end and correcting wrongdoings. After all, it is regular people who suffer when those problems are not fixed 🤷🏼‍♀️ But the people in power are not interested in that. So they propagandize and clowd the thinking of masses.

Please remember that Americans are very divided and currently there is a growing populist strain of isolationism (regarding Taiwan, Ukraine, Afghanistan) even as many of those same people support militarism in support of other wars in Gaza, Yemen, ect. We have the worlds biggest stick and cant agree on who to hit or why.
Personally I believe we should either discard the stick (massive massive military sending), or commit ourselves to a rules based global order without exceptions for our allies, OR discard the claim of “leading the free world”. And this is why art is important!
This is why art is one of the first things in civil society that gets suppressed right after courts and the media when oppression takes hold.
Real artists and good art are a form of pressure. Btw. this is a good way to separate real art from sell outs and 98% of state stabilising journalism from investigative journalism.
Good art is an invisible force driving civil society to a point of discourse.
It sacrifices itself out of pure will and indures the suffering from state power and society. Real artists are called perverse, sick etc. but this is just why we need these brave few.
Next time you look at an artist and shy away from disgust or hatred just stop for a minute and put all your ideological dogmas on the side. Ruling ideology is invisible for almost everyone and every rebellion against it will garner a harsh personal emotional response.
Art is the starting point and the freedom of artistic creativity and the resulting creation has to be defended at every moment. We don't know how we will look back at a moment 10 years ago even but we might appreciate the one guy at the table who just can't help him or herself to talk what we all think.

In Russia rulers govern through _Rule by Law_ instead of _Rule of Law_
_Rule by law_ refers to a situation where laws are used as a tool to control or manipulate society. It suggests that those in power can bend or manipulate laws to their advantage, without being held accountable. This approach often leads to abuse of power, discrimination, and a lack of transparency.
_Rule of law_ on the other hand, is a fundamental principle of modern governance that emphasizes the importance of impartial and consistent application of laws. It ensures that everyone, including those in power, is subject to the law. This concept is crucial for maintaining justice, order, and individual liberty.

This is despite the fact that being supportive of the police isn’t an inherently left and right wing position. Anyone who says they’re not much of a fan of a police has to explain how they’d maintain order in a society without some kind of group tasked - whether voluntarily or as a paying job - with maintaining the law and having a monopoly on violence, and which doesn’t lead to mob rule.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a Russian oligarch who also argued with Putin while promoting democracy in Russia and got 10 years in prison for it, said in his book that Putin is "All things to all men." You can even see in this clip how Putin tries to agree that free speech is good. His classic tactic is to tell various people with different ideas what they each want to hear. He can be a strongman dictator, a democracy-loving liberal, a staunch social conservative, etc. depending on what he thinks you want him to be. When he's not being challenged so hard, it disarms people, inspires confidence, and allows him to string people along with promises he never intends on keeping.

Khodorkovsky was promoting democracy? Where did you even get this idea from? Where are you people even crawling from with this BS? Khodorkovsky is in blood up his sleeves with his security people jailed for assassinations. Next time we'll hear how Al Capone was promoting democracy.

Actually, asking for peoples name multiple times throghout a converastion, even when it's obviuos that Putin knows his vis-a-vis' name - is one of his favourite verbal tricks. It kinda establishes a line between Putin and a person he's speaking to, highlighting that Putin is too important to even know other person's name. A popular trick, which he has been using a lot during uncomfortable interviews or during his annual talks with people

this is how people with more power in ruzzia humiliate other people, also filming it on video. I have couple examples in mind: a bunch of muslim soldiers in ruzzia army forced one slavic rookie to sit on a bottle. or couple of cops shoved a whole champagne bottle in rectum of a guy, cause they suspect that he is gay (he died eventually). in ruzzia's prisons guards love to push many objects to inmates backdoors (blooms, truncheons etc) and film it for blackmailing them (after this practice convict became a pariah in the eyes of others if someone will know about it)

My first question: Is this guy still alive? My first thought when he asked the guy’s name was that it was a threat. My own prejudice. When journalists ask him awkward questions he responds with what I see as a denial containing a threat eg. Did you order the FSB to poison Navalny? Hahaha, if the FSB poisoned Navalny he would be dead. You see? We can do this.
This was an amazing video. Yura held nothing back including the fact he was contacted and ‘told’ not to ask awkward questions. Can’t believe it was allowed to be published. He is a real hero.
And how did Russia get to this point? Well, this oppression is reminiscent of the Stalin era and this is what Solzhenitsyn had to say about that era:
“Why was Germany allowed to prosecute its evil doers and Russia is not.
(86,000 prosecutions would be 250,000 in Russia.)
What kind of disastrous path lies ahead of us if we do not have the chance to purge ourselves of that putrefaction rotting inside our body? What then can Russia teach the world?”
Recognition and confrontation of the evil that was done would have been the only way to prevent it happening again.

This "not interfereing with the regulars" reminds me of a demonstration I participated in during my neo-nazi days. Which is a subset of ppl not particularly enjoyed in my country. But, we've got the freedoms to allow even them to go on the street and air their grievances. So, they allowed us to do it on a sunday, on a route that for like 80% of it went through a commercial district. We protested in front of empty buildings, pretty much. Though we hat the big speech in front of the train station. And it went about as well as you can imagine in the birthplace of Marx where you can find "Das Kapital" on pretty much every nightstand.
Not comparing it to the total situation in Russia, ofc, but I think getting "unpopular opinions" out of the public eye is something many governments have in common. You guys have my deepest sympathies, your government is taking you down a road I only know from the history books, it didn't end too well for us.
