The GPS was so horrible I immediately went and ordered a Zumo XT. I bought mine for true Adventure Touring. I have had mine in the Sand and trails, currently only the factory street tires so far. I am looking at 60 40 Shinko 804/805 in the next 3 months. I can tell you off the factory floor my 22 PAS kills it in the mild to moderate off-road and it kills it in the on-road touring. I plan on doing a BDR with it this summer. Haven't had too many problems initially I had some EFT screen problems but after the first service seems to have corrected itself. I am fortunate enough to still have my Road Glide Limited so this bike is been offically made into my Dirt Glide Limited!
Your review was pretty close to what I have experienced with my 22 Pan American S. I have been lucky and have not had any hard atarts but when starting the other day in 25 degree temps. The dash screen went blank as the bike was running. Took the key fob out of my pocket and the screen came back on. Replaced the battery in the fob and solved the problem. I purchased the bike in June of 23 and now have 2000 miles on it. Approx. 500 of those miles are off road in upstate Pennsylvania Grand Canyon territory. The only Modification I can see that I will need is more agressive tires for the mud. The Timber trucks are murder on the trails but you have to choose your line to get through the ruts with the stock tires. The ride is so impressive you don't need to swerve around the pot holes and wash boards just goes right through. Most people cannot picture me on that bike as I am old school and prefer vintage bikes. I have competed in the Race of Gentlemen on a 1941 Harley but the Pan American S impressed me enough to buy one.I am not tech savey but am having fun learning.
really good review and info. im just wondering as a percent of world wide sales how many bikes are having real problems? are there thousands without trouble and maybe a few hundred with problems? i see alot of complaints and they are very valid for sure but how many guys have 30 or 50k without issue? looking forward to more post from this channel.
From our shop, it's definitely less than 5% having any real issues and at least half of those issues are partially operator error. I think a lot of the issues are just lack of knowledge or awareness about the bike.
I bought a used 22PA that had 2000 miles. I've put on 4100 miles on in 3 months. "New rider". I had a couple whinestarts, you just push the button again. I'm seeing some videos about a startergear update. Other than gps my PanAmerica is awesome.... The gps is better than it was, I think the software update helped.
Hey hotel, thanks for getting back to me. Really appreciate it. I ended up buying the 21 and love it more than I can tell you the only question that I would have is being new to the bike. I’m not sure if I am feeling a surge issue when you’re either, a little bit off throttle or at constant throttle. Can’t tell if it’s because of the short wheelbase and the roads I’m riding or with an actual surge problem. Honestly I’m not sure. Have you noticed any surging problems with any of the bikes that you’ve seen? Thanks in advance.
No surging issues, the throttle is very sensitive, there is also a history of fuel pump issues. If you heat the fuel pump whine, it could be the source of the surging.
@@hotel-delta hotel thanks for getting back to me. I don’t get any wine whatsoever. I did get the extended two year warranty on the bike, so what I’ll do is I’ll have them check the fuel pump to make sure everything is up to spec again thank you so much for getting back to me
I hear ya man. My frustration is that we are going on the third year for this bike and many of the issues you mentioned have not been resolved. I really would like to purchase this biké but the apparent laissez faire attitude is absurd. Where is quality control... come on man, are you for real h.d. by the time you walk out of the dealership your going to drop 26 to28 grand for a bike that is undone. I mean for the money I can get a triumph tiger, or ktm, even the BMW. and all of those bikes are dialed in. Like I said the Pan Am special really is the bike I want, but not if Harley doesn't get on the ball and fix these problems. We are going on the third year now. It's time to for them to show some leadership and get it done. Side note... I really like how the new triumph has a eight gallon tank but the aesthetics on the bike give it a well balanced appearance. Would be perfect if H.D. could achieve that for a possible upgrade solution on the Pan Am.
Minimum price difference between a 21 and 22, not a huge difference in bike. Any preowned should be pretty sorted by the time you get your hands on it.
Keep the battery up, don't panick if it throws a code. Expect the occasional glitch with electronics. When the bike shuts down and reboots, they pretty much always go away. Clear the codes and ride on. The bikes are amazing, but have those realistic expectations and you can truly enjoy them.
I've done 4 long trips (3-4 day rides) on my PAS, it's great, but with the Sundowner seat, stock seat sucks. Disappointments for me, include: no ability to connect a proper GPS to the bike infotainment system; The windsreen system is unsatisfactory, the wind noise for a passenger (who typically sits taller than the rider, even just 3") is like a freight train is hitting them, even with the taller HD windscreen (I replaced the HD bits with a Madstad system - prob solved); the crash bars are not true crash bars, they cannot withstand a relatively low speed crash (I know, trust me); when you put the rider's seat in the low position (which is where I ride), you slide forward because the rear mouting points of the seat remain in the same position yet the front mounting points are lowered; the plastic grab rail is a joke, while it's OK for pushing the bike around in your garage/driveway, it won't withstand picking the bike up from those off-roading falls; workmanship and quality control at the Factory sucks - me and my dealer have experienced enough miss-threaded bolts/nuts on my bike. Other than that, it's a beaut bike and my go-to bike. The ability to go from riding solo with and without gear, riding with a passenger (with or without gear) and doing all that without having to manually adjust suspension prepoad is fantastic. I would like to see in the future Android Auto & Apple Car Play connectivty and all of the above fixed. Also, I would like to see HD create an active on-line Coy Web Function where owners can go to and register to recieve automatic electronic 'notifications' of PA software updates. This way owners will be advised that there is a software update and they can then arrange to have the updates installed.
My ‘21 PAS is the worst bike I’ve owned. I have had 3 Hondas and 6 Harleys. I have had side stand bolts unscrew themselves, no thread locker. 4 software updates, replaced the exhaust pipe because the heat shield bracket broke. Replaced the lower radiator hose because it was routed to close to the exhaust pipe and was melting. A recall to replace the rear rack. Bike and fob not recognizing each other. I have been stranded, and twice the bike wouldn’t start in my garage and had to be trailered to dealer. I think there should be a class action lawsuit against the company and compensation for being the research and development department on our dime. Now the riding academy bikes are coming from china. @@hotel-delta thats pretty interesting. it makes the problems seem to be alot less if 95 percent are doing ok
There are definitely some real issues, just never as bad as people make it seem or sound

Find another dealer Peter, too many dealers not giving the bike or the segment they deserve
Great video, I truly enjoy my 22 PAS
Thank you for the review and for the great content!

I will say my new 22 seems much better sorted. Wires are ran better, no hard or winey starts. They are getting better
Sorry you feel that way.
Thinking of getting a 2021 or should I wait and save for the 2022? Thanks.

My biggest gripe is definitely the infotainment. The capability is there, the software is not.
Do you think it's possible to couple that Arrow header to the Screaming Eagle exhaust?
100% just use the exhaust gasket
I have had lots of problems, I am done with Harley. Stator quit at 7000 miles 💩

I'm on my second Pan America Special and have never been stranded, never any major issue. Favorite bike I've ever owned.
Harley came out with an employee incentive that I had to take advantage of.
